Chapter 225: Chapter 222: The Taste in Memory

"Mom, what did you do?" Bai Yanjiao had a bad feeling when her mother spoke like that.

"I..." Bai Xue hesitated, not knowing how to explain to her daughter.

"Forget it. It’s better you don’t know. Just remember that they, brother and sister, bullied Mom! When the chance comes, we’ll get back at them!" Bai Xue said through clenched teeth with resentment.

"Mom, did you and Li Wangfu again..." Bai Yanjiao could roughly guess what had occurred.

In the past, before An Shuchao injured his leg, she could hear moans and murmurs from the room next door at night, sometimes hearing sounds from Bai Xue that seemed like a mix of pain and pleasure.

She didn’t really understand what it meant, only later learning why from secretly gossiping with the other youngsters.

It had been over a month since An Shuchao broke his leg, and that room had been quiet. Seeing her mother’s dissatisfaction, she could guess the reason.

"Old An, he’s not capable..." Bai Xue said.

After all, her own desires were strong, and if a man couldn’t satisfy them, naturally she would not sit by in loneliness.

"Sigh!" Bai Yanjiao let out a breath and said nothing.

After An Hao and An Ping returned, An Hao didn’t go to sleep. Since it was already late, she wasn’t planning to use tomorrow’s time to steam buns; instead, she decided to spend the time and effort to steam them all today.

She washed the collected elm seeds over and over until they were clean, then mixed them with cornmeal, adding just a bit of white flour. She fetched a bundle of firewood from the yard, boiled a large pot of water, and stood by the pot to start sticking the buns to its sides.

She made more than twenty buns from a large basin of dough, sticking them to the sides of an iron pot, covering it with a lid, and began to pump the bellows to steam the buns.

By the time she finished the ordeal, it was already two or three in the morning.

She cooled the buns down, stored them properly in a basket in the kitchen, and then lay down on the kang to sleep for a bit.

The next morning when she got up, An Hao took out the buns for An Ping to eat. An Ping devoured three buns in one go and downed a bowl of egg drop soup, then let out a satisfied burp.

"Sis, your cooking is truly unmatched. It really tastes like what I remember from before," An Ping didn’t forget to praise An Hao.

"If it’s good, eat more," An Hao encouraged.

"I’m full," An Ping said, patting his round belly, "I’d definitely burst if I ate any more."

Seeing An Ping satisfied, An Hao counted the buns left in the basket. She reserved ten for herself and took out six buns, wrapped them in paper, and handed them to An Ping: "You should go back. Take these buns with you for Dad, let him have a taste too."

"Okay," An Ping accepted the buns and tucked them into his chest, walking a few steps before stopping, "Sis, let’s go together. Haven’t you missed Dad after not seeing him for so many days?"

"I’m not going," An Hao shook her head; she was actually disappointed with her father and harboured some resentment.

He seldom knew how to protect her. In his eyes, all he wanted was peace at home.

As long as there were no arguments in front of him, he believed life was peaceful.

"Come on," An Ping took An Hao’s hand, "Let’s go, don’t you want to see how Bai Xue is going to explain this to Dad? How can you miss such a rare drama?"

An Hao thought it over and agreed that going for a look wouldn’t hurt.

She was really curious how Bai Xue would tell this lie to An Shuchao and how she would cover it up!
