Chapter 220: Chapter 218: Someone is under that tree!

"Sis, let’s head over to the creek," An Ping said, perking up at the mention of food.

"It’s already ten o’clock. Wouldn’t it be a bit too late?" An Hao wasn’t keen on going that far, especially at night, as she was somewhat afraid of the dark being a girl.

Even though there wouldn’t be any bad people in the village, the thought of running out into the pitch-black night still intimidated her slightly.

"It’s not late. In the summer, I was still catching scorpions on the mountain past two in the morning with Erzhuzi and the others," boys always tend to be braver.

Especially for a food lover, the temptation of delicious food trumps everything else.

"I’m not you," An Hao felt that despite the tastiness of the elm seeds, she didn’t want to go at night, "If you really think it’s that good, we can go tomorrow."

"But you’ve made up your mind, right? After you finish tomorrow, it will definitely take up half of your day again..."

Thinking about the issue of time consumption, An Hao decisively agreed, "Let’s go. We’ll go now, move quickly, and we’ll be back in an hour."

An Ping nodded his head.

An Hao went inside to prepare some things. She grabbed a large woven bag and, as an afterthought, brought the sieve as well.

After plucking the elm seeds, they could be rinsed clean of dust in the crystal-clear creek water using the sieve, saving the trouble of repeatedly washing them at home.

If the branches were too high to reach, they would also need a long pole, and additionally, a sickle would be required in case they needed to trim down entire branches.

Once everything was ready, An Hao locked the door, and the siblings set off toward the creek by their village.

The elm trees near the creek, well-nourished by the water, grew especially robust, and the elm seeds were exceptionally plump and lush.

From a distance, the clusters of elm seeds made An Ping’s mouth water.

"Sis, when we get there, you stay under the tree. I’ll climb up and pluck some; the ones at the treetop are even better," An Ping said.

"Alright. But be careful."

"Don’t worry. My agility is even sharper than a monkey’s."

Under the pitch-black night sky, the siblings made their way to the creek, without even a flashlight, stepping carefully through the uneven darkness.

An Hao found the large elm tree and began plucking elm seeds from underneath it.

An Ping plucked a few handfuls at the base of the tree, then, guided by moonlight peeking through the clouds, he climbed toward the treetop.

Indeed, the elm seeds at the top were better. He inhaled their scent deeply, plucked a handful, and slowly chewed them in his mouth.

The taste was indeed not bad!

An Ping asked An Hao to tie the woven bag to the long pole and pass it up to him, and sitting on a branch, he began to pluck elm seeds.

After plucking just two handfuls, suddenly An Ping stopped his movements.

He thought he could hear faint breathing from not too far away.

"Sis?"

"Hmm?" An Hao responded softly.

"Did you hear someone breathing..." An Ping suddenly said.

"An Ping, don’t scare me; I get pretty scared easily," An Hao whispered, her heart pounding.

"No, listen..."

An Hao held her breath, and after a couple of seconds, she indeed heard a woman’s panting and what seemed to be a soft giggle.

In the dead of night, such sounds emerging suddenly frightened An Hao considerably.

She started to regret her decision and felt she wasn’t a very responsible older sister.

What if something bad really happened?

An Hao was panicking inside when suddenly, she saw An Ping slide down from the tree, pointing toward a tree about ten meters away, and said, "There’s someone, right under that tree!"
