Chapter 1214: Chapter 1214: Contradictory Answers
Seeing Yan Ye’s expression suddenly turn serious and earnest, An Hao vaguely felt that something bad must have happened, and her heart instantly rose to her throat.
"Professor Yan, just ask! I will definitely answer truthfully," An Hao said.
"Well, do you remember the gallstone surgery from early this morning?" Yan Ye asked.
"Hmm. I remember, I did it together with Doctor Ma, and the surgery went very smoothly. There weren’t any problems. Professor Yan, what are you getting at?"
"The patient has been unresponsive since post-op," Yan Ye continued.
"That must be an issue with the anesthesia, right?" After saying this, An Hao suddenly realized she had overlooked an important detail, "Professor Yan, did you just say the patient has been unresponsive the whole time?"
"Yes, unresponsive the whole time," Yan Ye emphasized once again.
"That’s not right," An Hao carefully recalled the situation at the time, "When the surgery finished, the patient was already showing signs of waking up. Maybe Doctor Zhou encountered this for the first time, so he wanted to confirm and observe a bit more."
"What was he observing?" Ji Chuan followed up.
"I think he was considering whether this counted as intraoperative awareness or post-op awakening," An Hao explained.
The anesthesia drugs they used were all compounded, containing not only anesthetics but also muscle relaxants and sedatives, always mixed in certain proportions.
If any drug were to lose its effect first, the patient might experience intraoperative awareness.
He could not move his limbs, but he could hear sounds from outside, gaining a certain level of consciousness.
He was aware of what was happening to him.
Thus, a good anesthesiologist always tries to prevent intraoperative awareness, as sometimes knowing what happens during the surgery can cause psychological trauma to the patient.
However, post-op awakening is different; the patient is fully conscious, limbs can move, and the effects of the anesthesia have passed, indicating a successful outcome.
"So what do you think? Which situation was it?" Ji Chuan asked casually.
"I believe Doctor Zhou’s anesthesia was very successful this time, and his control over the medications was exceptional. When the surgery finished, the patient was already showing signs of awakening," An Hao judged, "So how did it happen that the patient remained unresponsive? We just carried out a gallstone operation; it shouldn’t have affected his brain."
Ji Chuan and Yan Ye exchanged glances.
After pausing for a moment, Yan Ye still asked that question, "Who removed the anesthesia drip after the surgery finished?"
"Doctor Ma," An Hao replied very quickly to the question.
Ji Chuan and Yan Ye were both taken aback; this answer was completely opposite to what everyone else had given, making things start to get complicated.
However, this complexity made Ji Chuan and Yan Ye feel somewhat pleased inside.
If An Hao had admitted it was her, that would have been the most troublesome situation.
"Are you sure?" Ji Chuan pressed her once more.
"Yes, I’m very certain, I saw Doctor Ma remove the catheter with my own eyes," An Hao explained, "At that time, Doctor Zhou was observing the patient’s condition, and he said the anesthesia tube could be removed, so Doctor Ma did it right away. At that moment, I was somewhat puzzled; isn’t this supposed to be the anesthetist’s job? Was the doctor overstepping their bounds?"
"So you’re saying it wasn’t you who removed the catheter?"
"Of course not! Why would I do it when there is an anesthetist there? What if something went wrong?"
