Chapter 56: Texting Her
The packaging itself was elegant, as if it belonged in a high-end bakery window display.
"Of course he’d pick the fanciest desserts," she murmured, peeling back the wrapping.
Tiramisu in hand, she walked back to the couch, sinking into the soft cushions with a content sigh.
The rich aroma of coffee and cream wafted up from the dessert, and she couldn’t help but smile as she took her first bite.
God, this is amazing, she thought, savoring the perfect balance of flavors.
For a brief moment, she forgot about everything—her phone mishap, Niklaus’s puzzling outfit change, and even the stress of her day.
All that mattered was the tiramisu melting in her mouth.
As she leaned back against the couch, her gaze drifted to the blank wall again.
The lack of a TV was glaringly obvious now. "Well," she muttered, "it’s just you and me, phone."
She picked up her device and opened a random video app, determined to enjoy the rest of her evening.
But in the back of her mind, she couldn’t help but replay Niklaus’s casual, almost domestic demeanor at her door.
Why does he keep throwing me off? she wondered, nibbling on another bite of tiramisu.
Her gaze flickered toward the empty spot by the door where he had stood.
What kind of boss casually shows up dressed like that? And why does it feel so... personal?
Shaking her head, she pushed the thoughts aside. For now, she had dessert, her phone, and a quiet evening ahead.
That was all she needed. Or so she told herself.
Until her phone buzzed with a notification:
[Hello.]
Hermia blinked at the simple message, sitting up straighter on the couch. She barely ever got texts—who could it be?
Her first thought went to Jasmine. Oh, Jasmine! she suddenly remembered, guilt flickering through her mind.
She had yet to properly check on her new friend.
Ignoring the text for a moment, Hermia navigated to her social media app and searched for Jasmine’s profile.
It didn’t take long to find her—her username, Jazzy_Jasmine, popped up, and Hermia couldn’t help but chuckle.
Of course, Jazzy Jasmine. The name suited her bubbly personality perfectly.
She quickly sent her a friend request, fully intending to scroll through Jasmine’s profile and maybe check out some funny videos afterward.
But before she could do so, another message came through:
[Unknown: Hello, Mia.]
Hello, Mia?!
Her eyes widened, the screen blurring momentarily as she stared.
Niklaus? Her boss? Why is he texting me this late?
Her hands felt clammy as she held the phone. For a moment, she just stared at the words.
Then, without warning, she dropped the device onto the couch and let out a squeal she didn’t even know she needed.
Her heart pounded in her chest, and she stayed like that, face buried in a cushion, replaying the name and the message over and over in her head. Niklaus had texted her.
Why? How? What does he even want at this hour? How did he get my number? Should I be mad? Am I excited? Ughh.
Hermia didn’t know how long she remained there, caught in her flurry of emotions, but eventually, the comforting pull of sleep overtook her, and she drifted off, phone still lying on the couch beside her.
