Surviving the Apocalypse: All I Want Is to Find a Husband -
Chapter 57: The System’s New Rule
Chapter 57: The System’s New Rule
"Fucking bastard!" A man with a large scar pointed his gun at Lucian’s head. "I’ll fucking kill you!"
"It’s useless." Lucian sighed, his voice filled with exhaustion rather than fear. His emerald eyes fixed calmly on the man with the scar, as if the barrel of the gun at his head was nothing more than an inconvenience.
The man’s hand trembled slightly. For some reason, Lucian’s calmness and unbothered manners made him hesitate, but he masked his fear with rage. "You think I won’t pull this fucking trigger?"
Lucian let go of the man’s hand and turned to face the other. He took a step forward, the gun now inches from his forehead. "Go ahead," he said, his tone firm. "But if you do, you better hope you find another source of water."
While Lucian was dealing with a bunch of degenerate men, Medeia was frozen in place. The word ’woman’ repeated over and over in her mind, like a prayer.
She heard the sounds of gunfire several times, but she stayed where she was, ignoring the battle going on around her.
Did he really call me ’wife’?
Me? His wife?
[Yes, Host. He called you wife.]
[But weren’t you the one who asked him to pretend to be your husband?]
’Oh, shut up. Just let me be happy.’
Who cared if it was just an act? The important thing was that Lucian called her ’wife’.
But the happiness didn’t last long because the system always had a way of ruining her life.
[Host, the system must remind you that you haven’t completed your romance quest yet.]
[The system doesn’t give a time limit, but taking too long to complete a simple mission makes you less interesting.]
Medeia suddenly came to her senses as the system’s choice of words sounded odd.
What did it mean by less interesting?
Is she in some kind of entertainment show or what?
[Therefore, a new rule will apply to all romance quests.]
[Romance quests will have a time limit. The length of the time limit will vary depending on the complexity and difficulty of the quest.]
[Judging the difficulty of the current Romance Quest: Eating from the Same Plate ....]
Wait, what?
How can the system suddenly apply new rules?!
[Calculation completed!]
[The current romance quest is Grade E]
[Time limit: 10:00:00]
Medeia opened her eyes wide as the time limit appeared on the green panel.
Ten hours!
She was in the middle of business, but the system wanted her to have dinner with Lucian right away?!
What a joke!
The happiness in her heart immediately evaporated along with this announcement.
’What if I don’t finish my quest on time?’
[You will lose half of your C-points and gold coins].
Medeia kicked the tires so hard her leg hurt.
"Medeia, are you okay?" Lucian looked at her after grabbing the gun from Doug’s hand.
Medeia took a deep breath before speaking, "I thought I saw a desert lizard earlier."
She shifted her gaze to the group of men who looked miserable. Lucian hadn’t killed them yet, but some of them had broken bones, while others were unconscious.
"Are you done yet?" Medeia snatched the gun from Lucian’s hand and pointed it at Doug’s head. "We don’t have all day, so stop wasting our time. You have two choices, take us to your boss or I’ll blow your head off right now."
Medeia was mean business.
With a time limit haunting her, she couldn’t afford to waste even one second.
Doug gritted his teeth in annoyance because his pride was being trampled over by a mere woman. "I’d rather die than obey you."
"Well, then." Medeia wanted to pull the trigger, but she suddenly heard the sound of heavy boots thundered through the base.
A horde of muscular men, armed with heavy weapons stormed to the front gates. They seemed irritated as they saw a lot of their men lying on the ground in miserable states.
"Doug!" a burly man with a shaved head barked as he approached, his voice echoing through the base. "You’re embarrassing me!"
Doug turned to face the man, desperation flashing in his eyes. "Colonel Colton! These outsiders are causing trouble! They---"
"Silence!" Colton’s sharp look seemed to tear Doug apart. "You’re the first defense of our base, but you can’t even handle these two people! You’re useless!"
Medeia tilted her head to observe the man who had just arrived. The title "Colonel" was high enough, but she doubted that the head of the military base would go straight to the front door.
"Are you the leader here?" Medeia asked, her voice sounding sharp as she lowered the gun.
After ordering the other men to take Doug away, Colton’s gaze shifted to Medeia, then landed on Lucian. Instead of answering her question, he asked, "Is it true that Stormclad is gone?"
Lucian stepped forward and stood between him and Medeia. "Yes, it’s true. The Stormclad are gone, and their leader is dead. If you want to continue to get water from the Red Canyon, you will have to make a new deal with us."
"Oh, and who are you?" asked Colton in a demanding tone.
"We are the Red Star Alliance." Lucian said, "From now on Red Star will be in charge of Red Canyon. So tell me, Colonel ... Colton? Do you want to make a deal with us or not?"
"Aren’t you a fool?" Colton said, "You’re telling me that the Stormclad is gone, doesn’t that mean that we can easily take over the springs in the Red Canyon?"
Lucian smiled. "Didn’t you hear me earlier, Colonel? Red Star has taken over the canyon and we won’t accept joint leadership for the time being."
Corlon’s lips curled into a sneer. "You are bold to assume you can handle all of us."
Medeia, running out of time to complete her quest, finally said, "Enough with the chitchat, Colonel. If you want the water to keep flowing to your people, then you’ll need to learn how to negotiate. Otherwise, you can start harvesting the waterheart plants every day, but it can’t be compared to the fresh water, can it?"
"Lady, you really aren’t afraid of death, are you?" Colton turned around and said, "All right. If you want to make a deal, I’ll let you talk to our general. Please. follow me."
Medeia scoffed at him. "Do you expect us to follow you into your dangerous base? We’re not silly, Colonel." She sharpened her gaze and said, "We want to talk to your general here, outside the base."
