Chapter 224: Animal Communicator (2)
Chapter 224: Animal Communicator (2)
Medeia crouched in front of the black wolf, gently cupping Bear’s fluffy face. She leaned in, pressing her forehead against his.
"My son... I can finally understand your words now. Please, talk to me."
Bear opened his snout and barked, just like he always did—but this time, something unexpected happened.
A burst of words suddenly filled Medeia’s mind. The voice was high-pitched and full of energy, like an excited little boy.
「Mama! Mama! Can you really understand my words?! I have so much to tell you!」
Medeia covered her mouth, her eyes welling up with tears. Lucian, watching from the side, thought she really looked like a mother who had just found her long-lost child.
"Bear, I can understand you!" Medeia cried, hugging the wolf tightly. She ran her hands through his thick fur, making his tail wag so wildly it looked like it could knock something over.
"My son! Now we don’t have to be separated by a language barrier anymore!"
Lucian crouched beside them, resting his chin on his hand as he smiled at the two of them. "You two ... you really can understand each other now?"
「Mama, tell Papa I love him soooo much! But I want him to stop cutting my meat in half and calling me fat!」
Medeia gasped and turned to Lucian with fire in her eyes. "Honey! How dare you call our son fat?!"
Lucian chuckled, clearly amused. He gently patted Bear’s head. "He is a little fat though."
「Tell him I’m not fat!」
"Stop it! You’re hurting his feelings!" Medeia said, hugging Bear again. "He’s just a tiny bit chubby, that’s all."
「I’m not! I’m super skinny! This is just my fur!」
That was definitely not just thick fur, but Medeia didn’t have the heart to say that out loud. She couldn’t bring herself to hurt her son’s feelings.
After a few minutes of cheerful back-and-forth, Medeia’s tone turned soft and serious as she looked into Bear’s eyes.
"Sweetheart, we’re leaving tomorrow morning... and we don’t know how long we’ll be gone."
「I will protect my sister with all my heart!」
「No bad person will ever touch her! You can count on me, Mama!」
Medeia’s eyes sparkled as she smiled and kissed his furry head again and again. "You’re such a good boy. I promise, when I get back, I’ll bring you all the snacks you want and Papa won’t stop you this time!"
Lucian let out a sigh. "Don’t blame me if he gets too round to run."
Bear growled. 「I’m not fat! I’m just fluffy!」
"Yes, yes, you’re my fluffy little boy," Medeia said, hugging him tightly. "If Papa calls you fat again, I’ll smack him for you!"
Lucian had never imagined in his life that his dog and his girlfriend would team up just to bully him.
"Alright, let’s start packing," he said with a small chuckle. He stood up and held out his hand to help Medeia to her feet.
Even though they’d be using the mystical compass to travel, they still needed to bring food supplies and survival gear, just in case.
After all, they didn’t know how the old researchers would react. Maybe they’d agree to come along ... or maybe they’d say no right to their faces.
That night, the base was quiet, too quiet. Most people had gone to bed early because the air was getting colder, but Medeia was still wide awake, checking over supplies one last time.
Lucian came up behind her and gently rested his chin on her shoulder. "You triple-checked everything already," he murmured. "Come to bed. We have to leave early tomorrow."
"I know," she whispered. "I just ... think about something else. It’s really hard to leave Sierra behind after she just opens up to us."
Lucian wrapped his arms around her waist. "I don’t either. But she’ll be okay. She’s surrounded by people who love her. And Bear’s taking his role way too seriously, he’s basically her personal bodyguard now."
Medeia chuckled softly. "He really is."
They finally headed back to their room. Sierra was already asleep, curled up in a bundle of blankets with Bear lying protectively beside her. The black wolf lifted his head slightly when they entered, then rested it back down after a low, content huff.
Medeia walked over and knelt by the bed. She gently brushed a soft curl away from Sierra’s forehead, her eyes softening as she watched the little girl sleep. "They look so cute together," she whispered, glancing at Bear curled protectively beside her.
Then she sighed. "So ... this is what parents feel when they have to leave their kids to go to work, huh?"
She had only read about it in novels or heard bits and pieces from human souls who talked about their children. But most of the souls she met in hell were already broken and bitter. They didn’t sound like they regretted leaving their kids alone at all.
Medeia lowered her head and stared at Sierra’s tiny fingers gripping the blanket.
"What if she grows up and ends up hating us ... because we kept leaving her when she was little?" she muttered, letting out a dramatic sigh. "Oh no. That would be a total nightmare."
Sometimes, Lucian really couldn’t understand how Medeia could switch emotions so quickly. Not too long ago, she had strongly resisted the idea of taking care of the little girl, but now, it was like she couldn’t stand being apart from Sierra, not even for a moment.
"Not all kids turn out that way," Lucian said gently as he sat down beside her. "My parents worked a lot too. But they always made time for me, even if they were tired. They played with me, made me laugh, and gave me their full attention when they could."
He looked at her with a soft smile. "That’s why I never felt lonely."
Medeia leaned her head on Lucian’s shoulder, letting out a quiet breath. "You’ll be a great dad," she said softly.
Lucian chuckled. "You’re already a great mom."
"Alright, let’s get some sleep before we leave tomorrow morning," Medeia said as she stretched her arms overhead.
