Chapter 167: The Survivors (2)

Why would a division meant to protect and rescue survivors suddenly turn against them? The very thought made Lucian’s blood boil.

He clenched his jaw, his voice laced with bitterness. "They never changed," he muttered. "Not then, not now."

Medeia asked calmly, "So you’re saying ... you chose to disobey?"

Ethan met her gaze. "Yes," he admitted. "I refused to kill innocent people. And for that, my squad and I were marked as traitors."

For the first time since the conversation started, Medeia’s smirk faded. "Well," she murmured, tapping a finger against her chin, "that does complicate things, doesn’t it?"

"How many of them?" Medeia asked, cutting straight to the most crucial question.

"There are ten of us in total."

Ten.

Medeia’s lips curled into a slow, satisfied smile. Perfect. They would be her key to completing this mission.

"Where are they?"

"An old town, about ten clicks from here."

"Good. That’s all I need to know." Medeia reassured him, her voice smooth and confident. "Don’t worry, we’ll get your people out before they freeze to death."

"My G-goddess ... can I h-hold your ha—"

Before Ethan could finish his sentence, Lucian struck the back of his neck, knocking him out cold in seconds. "You need to rest," he said flatly.

Medeia let out a small chuckle. "Lucian, honey, he’s just a kid," she cooed, deactivating her seduction skill. She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around his neck from behind, pressing herself lightly against his back. "Is my honey jealous?"

"I’m not jealous," Lucian took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "But was that really necessary?"

Medeia tilted her head, pressing a slow, lingering kiss to his cheek before whispering into his ear. "Oh, honey ... do you really think he would’ve spilled his secrets without me rattling him just a little?"

Her fingers trailed lazily down his chest, drawing slow circles as she continued. "Besides ... no man makes my heart race the way you do."

Lucian narrowed his eyes. "Are you using your seduction skill on me right now?"

Medeia blinked at him, feigning innocence. "No. Why?" Then, as realization dawned, her smile widened. "Oh, no. Did I just seduce my honey without even trying?"

Her fingers drifted lower. "Do you want me to—"

"Medeia, my love, please stop." Lucian caught her wrist, his grip firm but careful.. "If you keep this up, I won’t be able to stop myself."

They were in the middle of nowhere, sitting next to an unconscious soldier, while Bear—their fluffy, wide-eyed adorable dog—watched them with pure curiosity. His innocent little face practically screamed: Why is Papa frustrated while Mama is reaching for his pants?

Lucian took a deep breath. "Didn’t you say we needed to save those soldiers?"

Medeia groaned dramatically, finally pulling away. "Ugh, fine." Then, her entire demeanor shifted in an instant. She clapped her hands together, her voice sharp and commanding. "Let’s move before I lose my poin—I mean, we have to move before we have ten corpses to bury."

"But, Lucian." Medeia’s playful demeanor faded, replaced by a soft, concerned expression. She placed a gentle hand on his arm and asked, "Are you okay? We still don’t know much about them, but what if they’re still out there eliminating people?"

Lucian turned away slightly. "I don’t know." His voice was thick with uncertainty. "I don’t understand why they’re doing this. The population has already dropped so much. If they keep eliminating people, all that’s left will be skeletons."

On top of that, most people already knew that anyone who fell into deep despair could turn into the Lost

Medeia’s hand gently squeezed his. "Maybe we’ll find more answers once we help them. For now, let’s just focus on saving them."

Lucian’s thoughts drifted to his past. When he was in their shoes, there was no one to protect him, no one strong enough to help him escape the military’s grasp. He’d even left his cousins behind to keep them safe from the dangers that haunted him.

But now, he had a chance to be the protector. He could be the one to step up, to fight for these young lives and help them escape the same fate that nearly destroyed him.

"Yes." He smiled. "Let’s save them."

They left the unconscious Ethan lying at the tractor head with them, while the cargo space was filled with firewood. However, Medeia made sure to leave just enough room for the survivors to sit inside later.

"But, I’m not sure if they’ll want to come with us," Medeia said, her tone thoughtful. "Should I use my seduction skill—"

"No." Lucian cut her off quickly, his voice unusually sharp. Then, realizing how possessive and jealous he must have sounded, he paused, clearing his throat. "I mean, if you use that skill on all of them, it could make things worse. They might turn against us once they realize what happened."

Medeia thought for a moment, weighing the possibilities. "You’re right," she said, nodding. "That could backfire."

Lucian gave her a soft, understanding look, his tone a little lighter. "We need to approach this carefully. They’re soldiers, not regular survivors. We can’t manipulate them like we might with others. We need their trust, not their fear."

Medeia sighed. "It sounds difficult," she said, pausing for a moment. "Maybe I should rely on you this time."

Compared to her, Lucian had an undeniable aura that made others instinctively trust him. It wasn’t just his angelic face, but the way he spoke, the calm certainty in his voice—it was as though he was someone who had lived a thousand lifetimes as a saint.

Medeia could do the same, but for her, it would always be more of a performance. Lucian, on the other hand, radiated sincerity, like a man who had never had to pretend.

Lucian smiled at her. "Don’t worry too much. We have ways to earn their trust. It won’t be that hard." His eyes flickered to the unconscious Ethan in the rearview mirror, his expression thoughtful.
