Chapter 427: Real Granddaughter
At White House
"How is my granddaughter?" Saul asked, his voice weary. He was still lying in bed, an IV drip attached to his arm, his body was so weak after he just had a mild heart attack. At this point, he was the only person Carla could rely on.
"She’s still detained, Mr. President, we tried to bail but there’s nothing we can do. There are too many cases filed against her now. She’s been accused of being the mastermind of every crime that Rico committed," his assistant replied carefully.
"Also, the Field Marshal called while you’re asleep. He advised that you should not intervene in the investigation. He assured me he would handle the matter personally and that you focus on getting better."
Saul nodded, his expression unreadable. He trusted his son-in-law more than anyone, if Arlan said he would handle it, he would.
His assistant hesitated before speaking again. "Sir, there’s something else..."
Saul’s brow furrowed. "What is it? Speak."
"William Lancaster is here. He’s been waiting for over an hour for you to wake up. He said he needs to speak with you about an urgent matter."
The assistant paused before adding, "Field Marshal Arlan Cartier also instructed me to tell you to listen to Mr. Lancaster carefully."
Although still groggy, Saul’s mind sharpened at those words. If Arlan was telling him to listen, then this was serious.
"Send him in," Saul commanded, straightening slightly in bed.
Saul dismissed his assistant with a wave of his hand the moment William entered the room. His sharp eyes locked onto the younger man, scrutinizing him with silent disapproval.
As far as Saul was concerned, the Lancaster family was the reason his granddaughter was suffering. Their involvement in this entire mess ran too deep, and he wasn’t about to forget that.
His fingers tightened over the blanket covering his lap. "You have five minutes," Saul said coldly. "Speak."
William stepped forward, meeting Saul’s gaze without hesitation.
"Mr. President, I understand your concerns about my family, but I trust you already know that the Lancasters do not engage in conflict without just cause," he began.
Saul swallowed hard. He couldn’t deny the Lancaster family’s integrity under Rock’s leadership. In his youth, he had admired Rock just as much as he had Arlan. If Rock hadn’t already been married, Saul might have even considered him as a son-in-law instead of Arlan.
William continued, "I’m here to lay out the truth, every crime Carla has committed, every person she has harmed, and the lengths she went to for her own selfish gain."
He took a step closer, his tone turning grim. "Right now, my brother is still in Lamey Country with my sister-in-law, and Uncle Arlan is focused on bringing Aunt Summer back. That’s why I’m handling this matter personally. I have gathered every detail of Carla’s crimes, and I won’t allow her deception to go unanswered."
"That’s my granddaughter you’re talking about, William. Do you think I’ll believe you over my own blood?" Saul hissed in annoyance. What was going on with Arlan telling him to listen to William?
William handed him documents and began, "Carla is not your blood. These are the pieces of evidence. Uncle Arlan conducted a DNA compatibility test between her and Aunt Summer, and the result was not a match. He did the test after investigating why Aunt Summer suddenly fell into a coma."
Saul gulped, his face paling as he read the test results.
William handed him a tablet and played a video.
"These are clips of Carla adding something to Aunt Summer’s tea. She’s the only one who acted suspiciously. Uncle Arlan didn’t want to believe David’s conclusion that Carla would poison her own mother, so he halted the investigation. But then Carla was caught during the Lane’s event. She also drugged my brother, and after Uncle Arlan found out, he instructed David to continue the investigation. That’s when David searched Carla’s apartment and found the bottle of drugs used on Aunt Summer."
Saul couldn’t believe what he was hearing and seeing. His body trembled as he weakly muttered, "This doesn’t make sense at all! Why would Carla not be my granddaughter? And why would she do this?! We’re family, and-"
"Everything makes sense since the day Aunt Summer had an emergency delivery at Clayton University Hospital," William pointed out.
Saul’s eyes widened. He was aware of the past, the scandal involving Arlan and the dispute between him and Tim Clayton. But he hadn’t expected this...
"Are you saying that Tim is responsible for all of this?!" he grunted. He thought the problems from that time had been resolved and that Tim had stopped causing trouble, but-
"If Carla is not my granddaughter, then where is my real grandchild? Don’t tell me she also died like her twin!" he burst out. He still remembered how devastated his daughter had been after losing one of the twins, and he didn’t want Summer to experience that suffering again.
"She’s alive, but Tim had the babies swapped. You all thought he simply accepted defeat after Lydia died, but he didn’t." WIlliam answered.
"Swapped?! Where is my real granddaughter then?!" he demanded.
"Tim took your real granddaughter under his wing, to make her suffer. You know her very well..." William let his words hang.
Saul’s eyes widened. Tim had two daughters, and one of them was a bastard from a prostitute.
"Your real granddaughter suffered under him. Tim treated her as a burden... My sister-in-law endured mistreatment from childhood. It’s only a good thing that she was strong despite everything, she managed to get through it on her own," William stated proudly.
"This... Rain?" Saul gasped.
"Yes, the very woman Carla has been bullying since she came back is your real granddaughter. Here is the result of her DNA compatibility with Aunt Summer." William handed him the test results.
"And we also conducted a DNA compatibility test between Carla and Tim..." He handed over another document, and Saul felt his world crumble.
