Chapter 424: Rock’s Hunch
It was already dark when Rain and Alexander arrived in Lamey Country. Following her father-in-law’s instructions, they headed straight to the hospital.
"What do you think is going on?" Rain asked as they walked through the quiet corridors toward Mrs. Summer Cartier’s private room.
Alexander shrugged. "We’ll find out soon. We’re here."
As they stepped inside, Rain’s heart clenched at the sight before her. Mrs. Summer lay motionless on the bed, tubes and monitors connected to her fragile body. The rhythmic beeping of the machines filled the heavy silence.
Rain bit her inner cheek, trying to suppress the wave of emotions crashing over her. She had always known Mrs. Summer as a lively, warm woman whose smile could brighten even the darkest days. Seeing her like this, so weak and unresponsive, felt like a cruel twist of fate.
"You’re here," Father Rock said, approaching them quickly. His expression was unreadable, but the weight in his voice told her everything she needed to know. He then turned to the man standing beside Arlan Cartier and instructed, "Call the doctor."
The man gave a small nod and promptly left.
"He’s my assistant, David," Arlan explained.
Rain greeted him politely, as did Alexander, before turning back to Father Rock.
"Dad, what’s going on? Why did you insist on bringing Rain here?" Alexander asked, his tone laced with urgency.
Instead of answering right away, Father Rock gestured for them to sit on the nearby sofa, but Rain didn’t move. She walked straight to the bed, her gaze fixed on Mrs. Summer’s pale face.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached out, gently taking Mrs. Summer’s frail hand into her own. "You’ll be fine, Mrs. Summer. Please come back soon. So many people are waiting for you, especially the kids at Haven Orphanage. We’re all praying for your return." Her voice was barely above a whisper, thick with emotion.
She had wanted to visit sooner, to be by her side and offer comfort, but the chaos surrounding Carla had kept her away. All she could do was rely on William and Manager Wilma for updates about Mrs. Summer’s condition.
Now that she was finally here, seeing the woman who had always been so strong lying unconscious, Rain felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness. She squeezed her hand gently, as if trying to pass on her strength.
"You’re not alone," she murmured. "We won’t stop fighting for you."
Alexander exhaled heavily, his gaze fixed on his wife as she sat quietly by Aunt Summer’s bedside.
"She’s wanted to visit ever since Aunt Summer fell into a coma, but we held back. We didn’t want to risk crossing paths with Carla or escalating the situation further." His voice was calm, yet the weight of the past weeks lingered in his words.
Turning to Uncle Arlan, he added, "She’s been keeping track of Aunt Summer’s condition through William and Manager Wilma. She’s worried, and I apologize for not visiting sooner."
Arlan offered a weary nod. "It’s fine, Alexander. I understand. And... I’m sorry for the chaos Carla has caused. As her parents-"
"You’re still not sure if you’re her real parents," Father Rock interrupted, his voice sharp and measured. "Let’s wait for the results. They should be here by now."
Alexander’s brows knitted together. "Father, what are you talking about?"
His father met his gaze with a firm expression. "Go get Rain. I don’t want to repeat myself. She needs to hear this too."
A sense of unease settled in Alexander’s chest as he walked toward Rain, gently taking her hand and guiding her back to the sofa. She looked at him, confused but compliant, sensing the tension in the room.
Uncle Arlan took a seat across from Father Rock, his fingers laced together as if bracing for something.
Before anyone could speak, the door swung open.
David stepped inside, followed closely by two doctors. "The results are in." His voice was steady as he handed an envelope to Uncle Arlan.
Arlan’s hands trembled slightly as he took the envelope. The weight of the truth inside felt heavier than he expected. He exhaled deeply, his fingers carefully tearing the seal before pulling out the document.
His eyes scanned the results, his expression darkening with each word.
"She’s not a match," Arlan finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. He swallowed hard before looking up at Father Rock. "Carla isn’t biologically compatible with Summer."
Rock snatched the document from Arlan’s hands, his eyes scanning the results before he gritted his teeth in frustration.
"I knew it. She’s not your real daughter. What kind of monster poisons the woman who raised her just to serve her own agenda? Even if Carla isn’t Summer’s biological child, she should have at least had the decency to treat her with respect! Summer gave her nothing but love and care!"
Arlan felt his knees weaken, but he forced himself to stand and walk beside Summer. His hand trembled as he reached for hers, his fingers gently curling around her fragile, unmoving ones. His vision blurred with unshed tears, the weight of reality pressing down on his chest like a boulder.
Summer had already suffered so much after losing one of their twins all those years agoand now, this. He couldn’t begin to imagine the devastation she would feel when she woke up and learned the painful truth: the child she had raised, loved, and cherished had done this to her.
The revelation that Carla wasn’t their biological daughter didn’t change how they felt about her. She had been their child in every way that mattered. Blood didn’t define family, love did. But that love was shattered the moment Carla chose to harm Summer.
Arlan’s hands curled into fists, rage simmering beneath his grief. ’How could she?’
And yet, beyond the anger and betrayal, one question burned in his mind, sending a chill down his spine.
If Carla wasn’t their real daughter... then where was she? Where was their missing child?
Arlan turned toward Rock, then shifted his gaze to Rain. His mind raced, conflicting emotions tangling inside him.
’Could Rock’s hunch be right?’
