Chapter 806: Chapter 722: The Drunkard Who Doesn’t Drink Alcohol

Yang Ping had just met with Director Xiong. Before Director Xiong could formally describe the situation, Director Zhao from the Medical Services Office hurried over.

"How’s the situation?" Director Zhao asked in a hushed tone.

"Police from the 110, traffic police, and our hospital security are all inside. The patient’s emotions are very agitated at the moment, and he’s shouting about committing suicide." Director Xiong checked to ensure there were no outsiders around before speaking to Director Zhao.

Director Zhao glanced at the emergency room’s firmly closed door. At this point, he could only rely on the police for help; there was nothing he himself could do. He then looked at Yang Ping and felt a lot more reassured.

"Is the temporary emergency room set up?" Director Zhao was very concerned about this.

This drunkard was causing chaos in the emergency room, so work there definitely couldn’t proceed normally. However, since the emergency department is a lifeline, work couldn’t stop, thus a temporary space had to be immediately opened up to serve as an emergency room.

"Don’t worry, it’s already set up. The equipment has also been moved, and we have already arranged the patient routing," Director Xiong said efficiently.

"He’s still not sober? Acting crazy because of the alcohol?" Director Zhao wondered aloud.

Director Xiong shook his head: "The patient’s blood alcohol concentration is very high, but he’s lucid, which is really strange."

"He’s lucid and still going on a drunken rampage?" Director Zhao couldn’t understand that.

"The patient was caught drunk driving by traffic police and was brought in for blood alcohol testing. The results showed a concentration of 102mg/100ml. However, the guy claims he didn’t drink at all, says the traffic police set him up, that the hospital set him up. He grabbed a saline bottle, smashed it, and threatened his own neck with the broken glass, demanding justice from everyone, while the police inside are trying to pacify him," Director Xiong had already briefed Director Zhao over the phone, and was now giving a simple face-to-face report.

"He has the nerve to justify drunk driving? Lawless. He doesn’t care about someone else’s life, not even his own," said Director Zhao, quite angry.

Angry as he was, with a patient whose nerves in his brain were in disarray and potentially ready to slit his throat in the hospital, that would be very troubling, so Director Zhao was anxious as well.

Looking at Yang Ping beside him, however, he felt much more at ease. The carotid arteries run along either side of the neck; if those were truly slashed, immediate rescue would be necessary, but with Yang Ping here, dying wouldn’t be so easy.

"That’s why, fearing something might really happen, I followed your instructions and directly requested Professor Yang to come over," Director Xiong then explained the reason for inviting Yang Ping for a consult.

It turned out someone had gotten drunk and was threatening suicide. Director Xiong was worried that if the patient really succeeded in slitting his throat, having Yang Ping join the rescue effort would greatly increase the success rate.

While they were talking, Song Zimo and Xu Zhiliang also hurried over from the department.

"Professor Yang, I didn’t notify you in advance, but I’ve temporarily pulled your two top people as well. If there’s really a need for emergency treatment, I’m afraid others might not follow your lead as well," Director Zhao said steadily to Yang Ping.

Bringing Yang Ping to the emergency department was Director Zhao’s arrangement, in case the patient really did attempt suicide and Yang Ping was the chief surgeon in the emergency surgery, the patient probably wouldn’t have it so easy to lose his life.

"Quite the coincidence. Last time, this traffic officer caught this patient drunk driving, confiscated his driver’s license for six months, and fined him; this time he was caught by the same officer, again for drunk driving, and is facing revocation of his driver’s license and detention. I heard the patient and the traffic officer were classmates in middle school; the patient was a school bully back then and often bullied the officer, so now the patient suspects the officer of abusing their authority for personal vengeance," Director Xiong knew quite a lot, all of which Officer Wang from the Police Station had told him.

"Grudges from middle school, personal vengeance? Was there any issue with the blood samples or the test?" Director Zhao didn’t care about these convoluted personal relationships; he was only concerned that the hospital didn’t make any procedural mistakes, because in case anything went wrong, the process had to withstand close scrutiny.

"No problem at all; blood was drawn twice from different limbs, two lab technicians separately processed the samples on machines, and both results were the same," Director Xiong affirmed with confidence.

Director Zhao frowned deeply, looking again at the emergency room’s blast-resistant door, wondering what was happening inside.

The situation was more complex than expected, involving grudges from school days. Directors Zhao and Xiong, Professor Yang, Song Zimo, Xu Zhiliang, as well as several department heads who had come for the consultation, were all standing in the corridor, waiting patiently.

As the head of the Medical Services Office, dealing with such troublesome issues every day required a strong mental fortitude.

And so, Director Zhao could patiently wait outside in silence, as entering the emergency room could potentially add to the chaos.

"Where’s the patient’s family? Are they here?" Director Zhao asked.

Director Xiong replied, "His wife is still on her way."

"Do they have children?"

"They have a daughter, she just started elementary school."

"He has a family to look after, how can he be so thoughtless, threatening suicide at the drop of a hat? Does he think he has the right to? I’m going to take a look inside." Director Zhao had some ideas in mind; after more than a decade as head of the Medical Services Office, he had his methods for psychological intervention.

Director Xiong rang the doorbell, and the door slowly cracked open a bit; Officer Wang peeked his head out, then promptly came out at Director Xiong’s wave.

Officer Wang was a police officer stationed at Sanbo Hospital from the local police station and was very familiar with Director Xiong.

"What’s the situation inside?" asked Director Zhao.

Officer Wang wore a look of worry and frustration: "We’re still trying to persuade him. This man is really stubborn, won’t listen to reason. He’s adamant that the traffic police and the hospital have conspired against him, insists he didn’t drink at all, and says we’re picking on the honest man. He’s threatening that if he doesn’t get answers, there will be bloodshed."

"He knows his literature, mentioning bloodshed in five steps. Wasn’t he a school bully in middle school? I’ve never seen an honest man be a school bully before. I’ll go in and see him for myself. What’s his name?"

Director Zhao sounded impatient.

"Wang Dapeng!" replied Director Xiong.
