Chapter 372: You’re blushing.
"You first!" Two glasses of red wine were placed before them, and Ye Qiu said.Bai Qi laughed heartily. In his view, Ye Qiu couldn’t possibly know how to discern wines, and by asking him to go first, he simply wanted to parrot what he, Bai Qi, would say.
"Alright, I’ll go first." Bai Qi didn’t mind Ye Qiu imitating him; wine discerning was a deep art. First, you needed money, then status, and finally connections. Without these, you wouldn’t even get to taste some wines, let alone know their flavor or discuss how to distinguish them.
Bai Qi randomly chose a glass of red wine, took a sip, and carefully pondered its name and vintage.
The people around them had already been drawn to the wine discerning contest between the two. Those attending the wine event were all regulars in various wine scenes and wineries, and they were keen to see who would emerge victorious between Ye Qiu and Bai Qi.
Everyone watched Bai Qi, who gave a slight smile and announced loudly, "Yellow Tail, a vintage from 2005."
"Correct, this wine is from Australia, indeed a red wine produced shortly after 2005," the bartender’s confirmation brought a round of applause from the crowd, admiring Bai Qi’s wine discerning skills.
Many people drink red wine in one gulp, which is purely a waste. Red wine should be savored slowly, tasting its historical sediment and unique charm and flair.
Bai Qi loved red wine; he compared red wine to women, with different brands and origin places representing women of varying personalities and temperaments, and vintages akin to the taste of a woman’s charm – pure or full of flavor, all were subjects of Bai Qi’s fascination and study.
Yellow Tail was but an entry-level red wine at most, and not expensive either. Recognizing this wine wasn’t difficult.
"Your turn!" After Bai Qi had successfully identified the red wine, it was Ye Qiu’s turn to make a fool of himself.
It was the same glass of red wine, and under Bai Qi’s scornful gaze, Ye Qiu picked up his glass and swirled the wine in his hand.
"Heh, thinking he’s a wine connoisseur? Such pretense," Bai Qi somewhat despised Ye Qiu’s action.
Ye Qiu examined the color of the red wine carefully and then took a sip.
"Name its vintage and label," Bai Qi urged him on.
He was curious to see how Ye Qiu would bluff. Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Ye Qiu’s embarrassment seemed assured for today.
Ye Qiu slowly set down the wine glass without showing any signs of timidity or panic. He calmly stated, "Ripasso, vinified in 2001."
Bai Qi was briefly startled; how could this bumpkin know about Ripasso?
Could he truly understand red wine?
At that moment, the bartender announced the answer, "The gentleman is correct. It is indeed Ripasso red wine, with its year perfectly accurate."
"How could he possibly guess right?" Bai Qi couldn’t believe it, and the bartender had to show the wine bottle, confirming the name and vintage precisely.
A small smirk formed on Ye Qiu’s lips. Did they really think he knew nothing about red wine?
Seeing Bai Qi’s dumbfounded expression, Ye Qiu knew he had achieved the desired effect. Dare to underestimate him, and Ye Qiu would certainly teach him what real underestimation looked like.
Although Ye Qiu had not frequented wine parties and other high-society events, his knowledge of red wines was no less than that of professionals.
A teenager, biding his time in the mansion of an arms dealer, waiting for the right moment to complete an assassination mission, spent over three months in the man’s wine cellar. How could he not know about wine?
That cellar was filled with red wines, from major wineries of various vintages, including those from newly rising wineries.
Ye Qiu, young and curious, took it upon himself over those three months to taste every red wine and, incidentally, to understand the history, origin, and vintage of each one.
Pity the arms dealer, who saw his lifetime of wine collection ravaged by Ye Qiu. Upon discovering his wines tossed about, bottles emptied, the arms dealer didn’t even need to confront Ye Qiu; overwhelmed with anger, he collapsed and never got up again.
"Ripasso red wine, originating from Italy, is vinified by the Sartori Winery."
"It has a gem-like color, with a hint of pomegranate luster, a full body, dry, with a long aftertaste, and upon careful tasting, a subtle spiciness," explained Ye Qiu, his demeanor relaxed and natural, not betraying any nervousness. Far from the clueless country bumpkin, he sounded like a red wine expert.
The details Ye Qiu provided were some even Bai Qi didn’t know; after all, not everyone who drinks red wine commits to memory the places of origin and the wineries that produce them.
Only collectors passionate about red wine could recount such details, yet to Bai Qi, Ye Qiu’s extensive introduction to Ripasso appeared incredible.
To the side, Mu Wanqing’s eyes were wide with astonishment, fixed on Ye Qiu, as if trying to see right through him. She had been worried that Ye Qiu would be unable to provide information about the wine in front of everyone, and she was even prepared to drag Ye Qiu away from there.
But then, Ye Qiu surprised her greatly; he spoke about the red wine expertly.
How could he know so much about red wine, even describing the taste so clearly? This is not something an ordinary person can do.
For a moment, Mu Wanqing felt that Ye Qiu was not as simple as she had imagined.
This is a man with secrets!
"Let’s continue, bring out the older vintage red wines!" Bai Qi steadied his mind, refusing to believe that Ye Qiu truly understood red wine, and thus he decided to raise the difficulty.
The bartender nodded and replaced them with two glasses of slightly darker red wine.
Bai Qi was the first to pick up one of the glasses, and after a moment, he spoke, "Domaine Riveyrac, 1989."
Pat pat...
Applause broke out once again among the crowd, being able to distinguish such a vintage required a certain wine-tasting ability, and Bai Qi looked at Ye Qiu with pride.
Immediately after, Ye Qiu drank from the other glass and also swiftly stated the name and vintage of the wine.
The two of them went on to drink seven or eight glasses without a clear winner emerging.
By this point, Bai Qi had to admit that Ye Qiu knew his red wines, as a normal person would have been defeated by him long ago.
As the difficulty increased, Bai Qi began to lose his grasp on identifying the vintages, and finally, on the tenth glass, Bai Qi got it wrong.
"Humph, I have got to where I am through years of tasting wine, I don’t believe you can name the vintage of this glass," Bai Qi reassured himself. The red wine at this point had escalated to the level of top-tier wines, even he rarely had such high-end drinks. Generally speaking, this glass of wine alone would cost tens of thousands of dollars, truly a luxury.
Therefore, it was not surprising that Bai Qi got the vintage wrong, as many of those present might not be able to discern the exact year of the red wine.
Ye Qiu had the bartender pour him a glass of the same red wine as Bai Qi, and after taking a sip, he said after a moment, "Among the top ten luxury red wines, Lafite ranks fifth. The red wine in my hand surpasses Lafite by a bit, ranking fourth, L’Eclatant."
"Its average transaction price is around 12,000 British pounds, a must-have for those who like to collect red wines."
"L’Eclatant Winery produces a limited amount of red wine each year for the enjoyment of just a few people around the world. Its color is like a ruby, deep and condensed, with brightness coupled with elegance, like a gentleman. After drinking it, you are filled with the aroma of oak, Asian spices, a smooth texture, and a deliciously sensual flavor that lingers in the mouth and memory."
"This glass of L’Eclatant red wine in front of me, its taste is more mellow than the newly brewed ones, with a depth of color that indicates it has over fifty years of history. If I am not mistaken, its vintage should be 1955."
Ye Qiu’s voice echoed in the hall, leaving the bartender stunned as he displayed the wine bottle to everyone, which indeed bore the label of 1955.
"Impressive!"
"Admirable!"
"This young brother really is a red wine expert."
Many people suddenly looked at Ye Qiu with newfound respect, feeling that he was not as simple as he appeared on the surface, but a very low-key young man.
Being able to taste a 1955 red wine says a lot. This kind of wine is not something that even wealthy people, let alone certain high-status individuals, would often have the chance to taste. But Ye Qiu could identify it, which showed just how capable he was.
Bai Qi turned into a stepping stone; compared to Ye Qiu, no one paid attention to him, and who would want to actively befriend a loser?
Bai Qi clenched his fists. He had intended to embarrass Ye Qiu, but the opposite happened, and he ended up losing face.
Watching Ye Qiu being handed business cards by people eager to make his acquaintance, surrounded by admirers, Bai Qi left the hall in a fury.
Ye Qiu was always mindful of Bai Qi’s actions, and upon seeing him leave, he couldn’t help but smile, "Next, I’d like to see how you plan to deal with me..."
After greeting the people around him, Ye Qiu stepped in front of Mu Wanqing.
"How come you know so much about red wine?" Mu Wanqing was still somewhat in disbelief about this fact.
"Actually, I’m a very low-key person; I wouldn’t tell them unless someone forced me to show off that I am knowledgeable in both arts and martial arts, well-read, familiar with astronomy above and geography below!"
"Stop! I’ve never seen anyone with such thick skin," Mu Wanqing laughed at Ye Qiu’s words, casting a disdainful remark. Watching Ye Qiu’s grinning face, for some reason, she felt very relaxed and happy, and she couldn’t resist the urge to chat more with this shameless guy.
"What’s gotten into me?"
"Hmm, your face is red!" Ye Qiu said timely.
