Chapter 157: 0155 Gather Together

In the Shangguan family’s residence.

The atmosphere among the entire family was somewhat tense, as many significant events had befallen the Shangguan family in recent days.

Several outstanding individuals nurtured by the Shangguan family had nearly half of their prospects cut off.

In Zhongshan, the Shangguan family was considered among the larger families, with a bloodstained background. Even in the deeply intricate Capital City, they held considerable sway and were regarded as a family of significant importance.

However, after old Mr. Shangguan’s two sons were both struck down simultaneously, the Shangguan family’s influence was severely crippled, pushing them to the brink of peril.

Speaking of old Mr. Shangguan’s two sons, both were famously influential figures.

The elder son, Shangguan Kun, had progressed from a local office to a pivotal figure in Capital City in just over twenty years. He was known as the fastest rising star in the political arena of Huaxia, and although old Mr. Shangguan had some influence, it was quite minimal. Shangguan Kun had climbed his way up step by step on his own merit, which was enough to prove his excellence. Otherwise, he would not have thrived so well in politics.

The younger son, Shangguan Peng, although not pursuing a political career, entered the business world and made a significant name for himself. He became a top businessman, single-handedly building a vast business empire that extended throughout Huaxia. He was a super-wealthy individual listed on the Forbes ranking.

However, in less than half a month, the two brothers found themselves in a streak of bad luck.

Shangguan Kun was visited by officials from relevant departments and was subjected to an investigation, resulting in a temporary suspension.

Meanwhile, Shangguan Peng’s company was also subjected to related inspections and was ordered to halt all operations of its industries for various reasons. The daily losses amounted to staggering nine-figure sums, which indicated the extent of the damage incurred.

One after the other, the two brothers faced misfortunate, and if it was deemed a coincidence, it would be far too coincidental, which was just the superficial view seen by those unaware of the truth.

Only a few people understood that this was no coincidence but a deliberate move by someone targeting the Shangguan family, decisively aiming to bring down the two prominent figures of the family.

The only one not affected was old Mr. Shangguan’s youngest daughter, Shangguan Mingyue.

Now, Shangguan Kun, Shangguan Peng, Shangguan Mingyue, and the younger generation had all gathered together.

Because old Mr. Shangguan’s illness had worsened, and they feared that he might not make it through.

With old Mr. Shangguan critically ill and the businesses of Shangguan Kun and Shangguan Peng suffering great hits, the entire Shangguan family was engulfed in a gloomy and dismal atmosphere.

"Have someone prepare more bird’s nest for the old man," Shangguan Kun instructed. As the eldest son of the family, he immediately assumed the role of the decision-maker upon his return home, and even Shangguan Shu was somewhat intimidated by her elder brother, losing her usual demeanor of the family head.

"The old man shouldn’t consume overly nourishing foods as they might actually harm his health," Shangguan Shu interjected.

"Sister, who said that? I’ve been too tied up to visit home, and if I had known father’s illness was this severe, why didn’t you tell me earlier?" Shangguan Kun retorted angrily. Seeing his father lying in bed, as a son, his heart was in great pain. If possible, he would have preferred to have been subpoenaed for an investigation sooner, allowing him some downtime to talk with his father.

Shangguan Shu, knowing that Shangguan Kun held some resentment towards her and feeling somewhat afraid of her elder brother, explained, "It was mentioned by a young man; he said it could cure father’s illness."

"What?" Hearing this news, those who had just returned home all stood up in astonishment.

"Can Father’s illness really be cured?"

Shangguan Kun and Shangguan Peng were the most surprised, but Shangguan Mingyue was somewhat skeptical. She had studied some medicine and knew about her father’s condition. In such a severe case, she believed it was absolutely impossible to save him.

Previously, she had told her elder brother, Shangguan Kun, that their father’s disease might not last much longer. Consequently, Shangguan Kun wanted to give their father some delicacies to enjoy, since he had endured hardships in his earlier years. Even after the founding of the nation, he lived a life of poverty, struggled to raise his five children into adulthood, yet two were not by his side: one had passed away early, another traveled across the country, and the youngest daughter, a widow, stayed at home to care for their father.

"It was someone Shangguan Hong brought over; you should ask her," Shangguan Shu said. If Ye Qiu failed to cure the Family Head, she did not want to attract blame and be scolded by her elder brother. Naturally, it was better to shift the responsibility back to Shangguan Hong.

"Oh? A friend of my niece?" Shangguan Kun paused for a moment.

"Where is my niece, Shangguan Hong?" Shangguan Kun then asked.

Shangguan Shu and Shangguan Dao exchanged glances, and Shangguan Dao took the initiative to say, "She doesn’t know you all have returned. I will go and bring her here now."

Shangguan Kun and Shangguan Peng soon understood and recalled Shangguan Hong, the child who probably felt the closest emotional bond with the old man in the Shangguan family.

Shangguan Dao brought Shangguan Hong back from the Goddess Villa. Shangguan Hong didn’t feel much affection for her two uncles. If it weren’t for Shangguan Dao telling her that her grandfather’s illness had worsened, she would not have wanted to return.

The moment Shangguan Hong stepped into the hall and saw her Uncle Shangguan Kun and Uncle Shangguan Peng, whom she hadn’t seen for a long time, she thought, "Who is this woman?"

Shangguan Hong’s gaze fell on Shangguan Mingyue as she sized her up, captivated by the aura exuded by this woman of similar age.

"What’s the matter? Don’t you recognize me?" Shangguan Mingyue looked at Shangguan Hong’s dazed expression and couldn’t help but smile, saying, "I am your auntie, have you forgotten?"

"Auntie?" Shangguan Hong repeated the name twice, gradually recognizing it.

The woman before her, who appeared even more beautiful than she, was the one who had given her her first birthday present twenty years ago. She still kept that doll, even though she didn’t know why her auntie had disappeared from her life afterward. Yet, she remained a distinctly memorable person in her mind, and among the entire family, aside from her grandfather, only this briefly glimpsed auntie ever elicited any fondness from Shangguan Hong.

"It’s been twenty years since we last saw each other," Shangguan Mingyue remarked with a touch of emotion, recalling how she was still an underage child when she went abroad for studies, and that departure turned into twenty years.

"Back then you were just a child, and look at you now, so graceful and refined," Shangguan Mingyue commented.

Shangguan Hong felt somewhat embarrassed by Shangguan Mingyue’s words, while Shangguan Kun suddenly interjected, "Alright, now is not the time for reminiscing. Hurry up and tell us about the person who can cure the old man. Where is he now?"

"He?" Shangguan Hong hesitated momentarily before speaking of Ye Qiu, who had gone alone to search for the missing herbal medicine for their grandfather’s illness. She truly had no idea where he was now.

"I am also eager to meet this man who claims he can cure our father’s condition!" Shangguan Mingyue expressed, with a look of interest that added a breathtaking beauty to her ageless face.
