Superhumans of the Dome City -
Chapter 89 - 89 9 Where to Go Next
89: Chapter 9: Where to Go Next 89: Chapter 9: Where to Go Next “The first club activity of Cyber Ghost Music Society is decided to help our new member, Miss Qiluo, recover her memories!”
Kardesia lifted the pink-haired girl’s hand and announced with the poise of a club president, despite the girl’s confused eyes that said, “Eh, I’m a new member?”
The gray-haired young man was the first to voice his opinion, “Hey, just joined without any reason?!”
Kardesia justified with confidence, “The reason is that I find it very interesting!”
“Did you consider the opinions of other members?!”
“So should we just ignore this child?”
The acting leader countered his bellyful of complaints with a single sentence.
Kardesia rested her finger against the brim of her hat.
“It’s not okay.
A young girl, pretty, without common sense, homeless, and suffering from amnesia.
In terms of the severity of the situation, it’s as bad as when I first met Lianyi.
Who knows what could happen if we leave this child alone?
The public order has improved over the years, but the bad guys haven’t left this city.”
Mr.
Shiyu shook his head with a wry smile.
“I wasn’t that bad at the time…”
The suit-wearing young man had just opened his mouth when someone turned his neat black hair into a bird’s nest.
“Lianyi was also quite a cause for concern back then, without any common sense.
What would have happened if a bad guy had picked him up?
You should be really thankful to Lord Spencer, you know~”
“Ha ha…”
The twin-tailed girl looked around curiously as the Empire duo whispered to each other.
“Are you curious?” “I’m very curious.”
The suited young man caught their gaze and chuckled darkly, suggesting it was best not to ask about the details judging by his expression.
He shifted his focus from the fools’ past to the matter at hand.
To be fair, Kardesia’s opinion was correct.
As a Superpower User, he was very aware that the control of superpowers was greatly linked to the users’ mental state, and amnesia was undoubtedly one of the worst conditions.
Her current stable state seemed related to his company, and no one could guarantee that Qiluo could still use her power, which seemed to involve “cognitive interference,” as freely by herself.
Gongsun Ce was a man aware of his own abilities.
He didn’t think a girl he encountered by chance would show closeness and favor just because of his appearance or friendliness.
Qiluo’s abnormal behavior must be influenced by factors unknown to him…
He remembered the first thing the girl said when she saw him.
“Hey!
Can you see me?”
That was likely related to him noticing her presence.
This led to another question.
His superpower didn’t allow him to see through illusions; why could he notice Qiluo, who had interfered with the cognition of the passersby?
The gray-haired young man decided to directly ask the only person who might know the truth.
“Miss Qiluo, why could I see you then?”
The pink-haired twin-tail jumped up from the ground.
“It must be a fateful encounter!” she exclaimed excitedly, “Fate brought us together!”
“Look, look, this unbelieving expression you have at the absurd story, let’s rule out that possibility first.”
Qin Qianbai picked up a notebook from the table, wrote down the word “Fate,” and crossed it out.
No further words were needed.
If fate could be used to explain anomalies, then everything in the world could be put down to fate.
How was that any different from saying “everything was arranged by the Lord of God?” Both were just giving up on thinking.
The Superpower User suggested the next insight, “Could it be the song?
Could you sing the song from earlier again?”
“Are you talking about ‘Silent Snow Night’?
Actually, I didn’t sing the original…
The original tune was too sad, so I changed it a bit to make it sound more cheerful!”
“No problem, just sing it the way you did before.
Remember to make yourself invisible before you start singing.”
Qiluo picked up the red guitar and started singing between the coffee table and the TV.
“I lie on the rooftop with snowflakes falling ♪…”
The Superpower User listened to the girl’s song.
Her voice was sweet and clear, and the guitar accompaniment was just right, enhancing the allure of her voice without overpowering it.
Setting aside his preconceived notions about the singer, he thought the song was quite good, certainly well beyond the reach of an average music enthusiast.
If a talent scout had heard her voice on the street, he would undoubtedly have turned around to strike up a conversation.
After the first verse of the song was over, he began to observe the reactions of others.
Kardesia looked around confusedly and asked, “Why have we all suddenly gone quiet?
Is this some new prank show?”
Gongsun Ce gestured to his friend to stay quiet for the moment.
“Miss, do me a favor; I’ll buy you ice cream afterwards.
Walk to the exact center in front of the coffee table, then walk straight to the TV.”
“Okay.”
Qin Qianbai didn’t ask further.
She stood in front of the table as requested, with Qiluo standing right opposite her.
The expressionless girl began to move.
She didn’t walk straight as the young man had asked, but instead moved around the singing Qiluo, almost brushing her pink hair as she stood in front of the TV.
“Hmm…?”
Qin Qianbai seemed to sense something was amiss.
Shiyu Lianyi wrote “Dissonance” on his notebook: “In my eyes, Qin Qianbai was walking in a straight line.
In my memory, we were just discussing the issue of the fifth club member…
and then for some reason, everyone just fell silent.”
The gray-haired young man nodded, “I understand now.
Qiluo, come out.”
Qiluo put down the guitar.
She tiptoed up to Qin Qianbai, seemingly intending to startle her, but perhaps remembering the painful memory of being pinned down on the sofa just before, the twin-tail girl shivered, turned around, and squatted in front of Kardesia.
“Clatter, bang!”
Qiluo wore a smile as she deactivated her power, her hands positioned like paws beside her ears.
“Yikes?!”
Kardesia rarely let out a surprised yell, but even quicker than her reaction were the movements of the young man in the suit—Shiyu Lianyi had his handgun aimed at the attacker’s head, safety off, in the blink of an eye.
The dark barrel pressed right against Qiluo’s temple.
With pink twin tails drooping and a morose look, she slowly raised her hands, terrified that any quick move might make the other person pull the trigger: “I, I just wanted, to crack a joke.”
“Hey, Lianyi!
What’s with the overreaction!” Kardesia fumed as she grabbed her minion’s arm, “Apologize to Miss Qiluo right now.”
The young man in the suit unflappably put away the firearm.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”
Twin-tailed pink hair looked over with watery eyes: “Wuu, Gongsun Ce…”
“This is why it’s important to maintain social distancing, have you remembered that, Miss Qiluo?”
“I’ve got it…
from now on I’ll only dare to get close to you…”
The young lady crossed her arms, forming an X with her body.
“That won’t do either, you need to keep a safe distance from everyone.”
Gongsun Ce picked up a notebook, starting to ponder the countermeasures for this incident.
·
A few minutes later.
Gongsun Ce borrowed Kardesia’s writing pad and began to scribble on it with a black pen.
“Let’s start summarizing the situation.
We can tentatively conclude that Miss Qiluo’s ability comes into effect in some form, causing interference with human cognition.
During the activation of her ability, everyone will ignore her existence and the effects she brings about.
Memories will subjectively adjust themselves, and actions at the moment will be unintentionally misconstrued.
Should the ability be activated suddenly, those present will experience discomfort to varying degrees.
When the ability is lifted, everything seems to suddenly return.”
The young man with gray hair drew a little figure on the writing pad.
“The only exception is me.
I’ve been able to normally interact with her, and moreover, at the very beginning, my ability didn’t affect her.
Based on these two points, we can conclude that…”
“Gongsun is special.” Mr.
Shiyu shook his head, “That’s the only explanation I can think of, and right now, we don’t have enough information.
It seems unlikely that we’ll resolve Miss Qiluo’s problem within a day.”
Gongsun Ce tried to use telekinesis on the twin-tailed girl again, and a tuft of her hair was gently lifted.
Everything was normal, as if what he’d previously seen was merely an illusion.
“Let’s start with the information we currently have.
The song and her identity are both avenues for investigation, and moreover, this bizarre ability must have spawned similar rumors…”
The blonde lady in the top hat snatched her writing pad back, cutting off the gray-haired young man mid-sentence.
“More importantly, where this child will go next is the most pressing problem that needs resolving!”
Her words shifted everyone’s focus from reasoning about superpowers to the realm of finding a place for a stray…
well, college student.
Indeed, that was the biggest issue facing them all.
With Qiluo herself having a certain aversion to official institutions and showing a certain dependency on Gongsun Ce, where should she go next?
They couldn’t act like irresponsible adults who discard people as useless tools when they’re done with them.
“Can I stay with Mr.
Gongsun?”
No, that’s not an option, absolutely not.
Mr.
Gongsun did not wish to walk out his door the next day only to be gossiped about by the neighborhood elders.
Mr.
Gongsun also did not wish to be pursued again by some clod.
Gongsun Ce gestured to the top-hat lady, and Kardesia shook her head repeatedly.
“My place is a bit tight on living space at the moment.
I can’t take the kid in.
Maybe you, Lianyi…”
Qiluo let out a yell and clung to the gray-haired young man’s arm: “No!
I don’t want to!!!”
The poor kid looked genuinely terrified.
It wasn’t hard to understand; anyone would be scared with a gun pointed at their head, but that’s not a reason for you to latch on, miss, let go!
If you’re grateful, don’t push the person into danger with your actions!
“I’ll take you in.”
Qin Qianbai, who had been silent, spoke up.
“My place is right next to Ah Ce’s.
But there’s only one bed, so you’ll have to sleep on the floor.”
Qiluo walked up to the young lady, excitedly took her hands.
“Thank you, Miss Qin.
You’re so kind!”
What was her world view like?
It seemed as if she would believe anything anyone said, deeming them a good person for a bit of sweetness, not even elementary schoolers would be so unguarded, right?
The young man played along: “Exactly, Miss Qin is a genuinely good person, so you should listen to her.
It’s all for your own good, understand?”
Qiluo nodded obediently.
Miss Qin looked over at him, seemingly at a loss.
Gongsun Ce mouthed to her: “Just take care of her like a child.
Put on the air of a senior.”
“Mhm, mhm.
You must listen to me, okay, don’t wander off.”
The problem of where Qiluo would go seemed to be solved.
It was nearly 4 PM now, and he remembered some blonde lady had a class in the afternoon, but it seemed she had no intention of returning to school.
Gongsun Ce controlled the computer to drift over and connected it to the TV with a data cable.
“There’s a classic school rom-com celebrating its tenth anniversary recently; I’m planning to dig it up for a re-watch.
Do you all want to watch together?”
Five votes in favor; the motion passed unanimously.
The next motion on which drinks to order was fiercely debated by Kardesia and Qin Qianbai.
The Cyber Ghost Music Society’s second club activity, after its formation, ended up being the viewing of a teenage anime completely unrelated to the club’s name.
