Chapter 1027: Chapter 85: You Are Never the Lonely Savior

The unexpected words from the Silver Baron caught Annan off guard.

He was truly unprepared for this answer.

Or perhaps...

Annan had subconsciously assumed that all the difficulties and enemies he encountered could only be resolved by himself.

But watching the Silver Baron skillfully taking over the trouble,

his brain went blank... he didn’t even know what to say for a moment.

Should he thank him? Or should he refuse the Silver Baron’s kindness? Or should he strive to involve himself as well?

Seeing Annan momentarily lost, the Silver Baron couldn’t help but chuckle and gently touched Annan’s hair.

He spoke softly, "Annan... do you think that nothing major has happened in this world for a long time just because of ’Luck’?

"Of course, the duties of the gods aren’t limited to supporting the great barrier. After all, the great barrier only appeared in the Third Era... What we need to do is to watch over this world together. But on the other hand, gods aren’t omnipotent or capable of changing everything... What we can do is only within our powers, yet people won’t simply hope for that.

"Just like you as a Grand Duke, your people certainly hope to immediately start living better lives—more precisely, they hope to lay at home without working yet receive ample income, live a life free from diseases and accidents; they also hope they won’t meet anyone they dislike, nor have anyone dislike them; they fantasize that without doing anything or lacking anything, they could still attract the opposite sex.

"But you know... how is that possible?"

Annan couldn’t help but nod.

Yes, he knew.

—It wasn’t possible.

Because people yearned for immediate success, to reach the most beautiful future in their hearts at once.

They didn’t care about the process, the underlying principles, nor the difficulties they might face in achieving their dreams—but they were very concerned about whether these difficulties would disrupt their current lives.

Outstanding leaders could only balance long-term goals with current needs... Yet even the most exceptional leaders could never meet everyone’s needs.

Unless a Dreamweaver conjured up an eternal illusion.

"When people pray to us, they don’t consider what we can achieve, nor why we don’t act. They just think about whether we have fulfilled their wishes, and if not, why not.

"Is this a human flaw? I don’t think so... It’s just because humans are mortal."

The Silver Baron said smoothly, "Only a handful of sages can perpetuate their thoughts through time. For most people, their lives are just that short... One careless moment and it’s passed, and it’s over.

"You are nearing the domain of gods now, so I am sitting here, making it clear to you. It’s like when a child has grown up, a father will sit down with him to talk about life."

The Silver Baron said, pushing up his monocle and revealing a gentle smile, "You can’t think... that you are like the hero in a fairy tale, where the whole world can only rely on you to defeat the evil lord, right? You should know that even in the hero’s tales, there are some tasks that don’t need the hero to handle personally.

"Besides, since you have a greater mission, small tasks like picking fruit or delivering love letters aren’t for you to do. Of course, you can do them, but they shouldn’t become your tasks, your purpose."

The Silver Baron spoke softly, yet with words that slightly shook Annan’s core, "Listen well, Annan. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You can never be omnipotent, nor can you always handle everything perfectly.

"Tasks are never-ending, Annan.

"You indeed are the savior of this world. But you are not meant to do menial tasks, nor should everything require your direct involvement. We are not wooden figures that do nothing. Why should only you be able to save the world, while we just watch?

"After all, if there were such a world where only a particular person could save it... and in this situation, everyone else put down their work, didn’t contribute their part to aid the ’hero,’ but instead just sat waiting for salvation to come or even caused trouble for the ’hero.’

"Such a world might as well be destroyed."

Annan realized it.

Just as the Silver Baron had said before.

This was a form of arrogance in his heart.

Although he didn’t say it or show it... he had seen himself as the "protagonist" of this world. Any trouble would ultimately become his trouble; and these troubles, only he could resolve.

"I understand," Annan nodded seriously. "I was wrong about this."

"I used to think that if everything around me were just a game, a book, or a movie, then I would undoubtedly be the protagonist."

"Since I’m the ’protagonist’, everyone else must be ’supporting characters’. Thus, they can’t do anything right, and eventually, I have to resolve everything myself... whether it’s a big or small matter."

"Just like the great lords, the root treasures, and the azure stars."

Rather than a savior, he was more like a tool.

He had indeed acted this way before.

Annan treated the players as tools... in a sense, he saw himself as an even bigger tool, like a contractor.

It wasn’t until now that Annan realized...

He couldn’t possibly handle everything himself all the time.

Annan had delegated authority in the Winter Duchy mainly because he didn’t care about the power there... not because he understood the principle that "taking on everything personally leads to an early grave."

"I understand," Annan nodded again.

His eyes seemed to brighten, "I’ll leave this matter to you, Silver Baron. I am going to handle some personal matters..."

"If you need my help, let me know. If I can be of assistance, I will be there."

"That’s how it should be."

The Silver Baron smiled reassuringly, gently stroking Annan’s silky long hair, "That’s what ’friends’ are for. Give and take, borrow and return. I know you’re a good person who doesn’t like to take advantage of others... but you could trust your friends more."

Annan opened his mouth but then said nothing.

He just lowered his head, allowing the Silver Baron to quietly stroke his hair. Unexpectedly... and after a long time, he felt a faint sense of relief.

—Actually, Annan knew this principle.

Annan had known for a long time that instead of making friends by helping others, asking for their help often garnered more goodwill. A simple request, a sincere thank you, could indeed bring people closer than flattery.

...But that was when Annan saw others as tools.

When they were not familiar, Annan would consciously act this way.

Like the players who had just arrived in this world.

At first, Annan wanted everyone to solve problems together.

But when he truly regarded them as friends, he started thinking about how to avoid asking for their help, how to solve problems on his own; how to provide them with more benefits...

Like not telling Salvatore and Hugo about this problem. He didn’t talk to Maria or Dmitry either.

He came alone— with a Summon, sneaking over to ask the Silver Baron.

Throughout the process, Annan had never even considered the possibility of "asking others for help."

"Just focus on your personal matters. If there is anything, the Faceless Poet will inform you immediately," the Silver Baron spoke softly, his voice soothing. "You can also trust others a little more. Trust your friends more... they are not fools lost without you."

"After all... you are not Mr. Radiance, a lonely sun god.

"You are the Light of Many Lights, the Father of the Stars."
