Chapter 68: Stinky Tofu

Jake’s eyes gleamed like a cat eyeing its prey. Staring at his aunt, this plump and delicious feast, he couldn’t help but drool, wanting to take her right then and there.

But today was a date, and Jake didn’t want to just satisfy his own desires like yesterday.

"Aunt, how did you know I was here?" Jake pushed the door wide open and leaned against the corner of the wall, striking what he thought was a cool pose.

"I just heard footsteps, so I opened the door." Though Taylor was Jake’s elder, she nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Are you ready? Today I’ll take you on a proper outing."

"Mhm, just let me put on my shoes and we’ll go."

As soon as the words were spoken, Taylor pulled her feet out of her slippers, and that mysterious glimpse of black made Jake’s expression flicker. Under her long skirt, a pair of petite feet were actually wrapped in thick black stockings.

The plump heels were no longer visible as flesh-colored, until the entire sole slipped into a pair of black autumn-style women’s heels.

Just as Taylor was about to put on the other shoe, Jake’s lecherous hand couldn’t resist reaching toward her buttocks.

Her delicate face flushed. "Jake, stop fooling around, I’m putting on my shoes."

"Hehe, Auntie, did you wear these stockings just for me?" Jake asked knowingly.

Embarrassed, Taylor nodded slightly, cursing inwardly: "Jake is so bad, he already knows the answer but still asks!"

Taylor never used to like wearing stockings. Changing herself for the man she cared about suited her personality perfectly. The last time she wore stockings, she had agonized over it for half a day.

And when she went to buy them, the salesgirl at the store had even teased her. After returning, since it was autumn and the weather had turned cooler, she tried pairing them with a skirt. Not only did it keep her warm, but it also relieved the tightness in her calves from standing on the teaching platform for long hours.

Such a win-win situation was something Taylor naturally embraced.

"Don’t flatter yourself. I only wore them because the weather got cold." Ignoring Jake’s wandering hands, Taylor quickly put on her shoes.

Jake wore an expression of knowing exactly how things stood. In situations like this, eavesdropping on her inner thoughts was pure enjoyment. Taylor’s unspoken, embarrassing thoughts were no different from her saying them out loud.

His earlier move had just been testing the waters. After all, with those perky, beautiful buttocks swaying right in front of him, how could he resist giving them a squeeze?

The two of them got ready to leave. Taylor only brought an extra bag, and then they drove off toward their destination.

Jake had made plans beforehand. Instead of going to the usual Dawn Plaza, they headed to another leisure plaza called Meijia.

Jake and Mia often visited Dawn Plaza, and many shop assistants there recognized him. To avoid unnecessary trouble, Jake decisively took Taylor to Meijia.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, many families went out to enjoy themselves, and Meijia Plaza was still packed. The supermarket on the first floor was bustling with crowds. For ordinary families, being able to leisurely stroll around the plaza and shop with their loved ones was already a form of happiness.

Meijia was a bit farther than Dawn and wasn’t close to where Jake and Taylor lived. By the time they arrived, it was almost noon.

After parking the car, Jake naturally held Taylor’s hand and walked into the plaza.

At first, Taylor felt a little embarrassed, but Jake’s firm attitude made her wavering heart grow steadier.

Her relationship with Jake was nothing more than something hidden in the shadows, something that couldn’t be made public. Yet now, Jake was boldly holding her hand, completely indifferent to the gazes of those around them.

After all, she was already 39 years old, practically 40. A few more years and she’d be like Jake’s mother. She cared deeply about whether people were looking at her with judgmental eyes.

But Taylor was overthinking it. Teaching was a profession that kept her sheltered from the elements, and coupled with her natural beauty and meticulous self-care over the years, she looked no older than her early 30s.

Jake, on the other hand, was actually 24. After graduating, he had weathered the ups and downs of society, making him appear more like he was in his late 20s.

The two of them standing together instead made people envious—a perfect match, a handsome man and a beautiful woman, with not a hint of incongruity.

They weaved through the bustling crowd and entered the plaza’s interior.

The noise, laughter, and chatter instantly grew quieter. It was no longer summer, and the plaza’s air conditioning had been turned off entirely. Even so, Jake felt a momentary drop in temperature as he stepped inside, especially with the thick, rubbery transparent curtains at the entrance.

It gave Jake a sense of déjà vu, as if he were back at Dawn Plaza. The designs of shopping centers were all similar, though Meijia was slightly larger than Dawn.

It was about six stories tall, with neatly arranged escalators crisscrossing high above. Jake felt like he was standing at the bottom of a massive oval-shaped whirlpool, giving him a somewhat surreal, frog-in-a-well perspective.

The first floor’s lobby sold gold and silver jewelry, with almost every shop crowded with couples or married pairs making selections. The second floor sold men’s clothing, which was comparatively less busy. Men’s spending power was what it was—a piece of clothing, even underwear, wouldn’t be replaced unless it was completely unwearable. Unless it was tech or graphics cards, that was a man’s true paradise.

The third floor was for women’s clothing, with couples filling the corridors. There were even some families of three. The fourth floor was for electronics, children’s toys, and an arcade, where the noise was loud enough that Jake could still hear the thumping music even from the first floor.

The fifth and sixth floors were restaurants—all kinds of snack shops, chain restaurants, and buffet-style eateries. It was peak dining hours, and from a quick glance, Jake could see a sea of people.

The more crowded a place was, the more humans loved to flock to it.

Jake held Taylor’s hand and headed straight to the fifth floor, where the snack stalls were less crowded.

Taylor had been passive the whole time, but she loved this feeling of being led and introduced to new things, rather than having to plan and decide everything herself.

They wandered around the snack stalls, which offered an dazzling variety of treats. Taylor had been holed up at the school as a teacher for so many years, and after taking care of Linker for so long, she could barely maintain a normal life for herself.

In the past, she could still rely on Linker’s affection to occasionally watch movies or buy clothes. But after being scorned by his family, she threw herself entirely into teaching, and it had been ages since she’d had such a leisurely outing.

Besides, Jake had already planned everything out. All she had to do was empty her mind and follow this reliable man, indulging in her rare moment of rest.

"Taylor, try some stinky tofu." Jake had somehow switched to calling her by name, holding out a bowl of stinky tofu as he approached.

Taylor was momentarily taken aback but quickly caught on, praising Jake for his quick thinking.

It was true. If people heard Jake calling her "Auntie" while acting like a couple, it would definitely draw attention.

When she was a student, Taylor had loved eating these kinds of snacks. After getting married, she gave them up for Linker, afraid they might harm his brilliant doctoral mind. Looking back now, she realized she’d been wrong.

With a soft sigh, Taylor flashed a charming smile. "Stinky tofu? I haven’t had it in so long, I’ve almost forgotten what it tastes like."

Even in such a noisy environment, the "inner voices" of passersby occasionally intruded, but Jake had gotten much better at controlling his ability, briefly amplifying Taylor’s "inner voice."

Though Jake was tall and imposing, he was actually very attentive and considerate—one of the reasons Mia was so hopelessly in love with him. Though they hadn’t talked much along the way, Taylor’s fluctuating emotions and hidden "inner voices" couldn’t escape Jake’s notice.

After experiencing an unhappy marriage, the little details of life were still etched in her memories. Whenever she recalled them, sadness was inevitable.
