Chapter 505: Chapter 505: The Story of Su Beiming_1
The barrier on the Wind, Moon, Flowers, and Birds Painting is recorded in the Grand Supreme Taoist Scripture. Unless one practices the scripture, they would find it extraordinarily difficult to break.
Su Chengyu channels his Mana into the painting. The painting gleams and unfurls automatically mid-air, emanating a faint radiance.
The painting’s motifs change as well. Originally, it was an ink landscape depicting autumn in its melancholy glory.
Now, it has transformed into a landscape painting. On taking a closer look, Su Chengyu sees that the mountains and water in the painting are vibrantly lifelike. A vortex halo then appears on the painting, similar to the entrance of Liyuan Cave Heaven.
Su Chengyu takes a leap and enters. The world he finds himself in is full of the chirping of birds, fragrant flowers, luxuriant trees, verdant mountains, and the gentle gurgling of water. A waterfall cascading down the mountains forms a beautiful rainbow.
"Isn’t this the same scenery from the painting?"
Upon closer examination, Su Chengyu realizes that he is indeed standing in the very landscape depicted on the painting.
He has entered the world within the painting, leaving him utterly dumbfounded by the marvel.
He walks through the meadow and sees a pavilion and a few bamboo houses. Behind these structures is a lush bamboo forest.
He finds a compass on the pavilion’s table, which was his grandfather’s, an instrument he used during fortune-telling. It was a relic left behind by his grandfather.
The moment Su Chengyu touches the compass, it starts rotating on its own, radiating bright light. Immediately afterward, an illusory figure emerges from the compass, his back turned to Su Chengyu.
"My child, you have finally arrived."
The voice... it belongs to his grandfather, Su Beiming.
"Grandfather! You’re alive? Have you been in this painted world all along?" Su Chengyu says, his face lighting up with joy.
Su Beiming’s phantom slowly turns around, but he looks nothing like Su Chengyu’s memory of him.
"You’re not my grandfather! Who are you?!" A horrified Su Chengyu exclaims.
"Child, I am your grandfather. This is my true form. My real name isn’t Su Beiming, but Su Linyuan. I named you Su Chengyu because I wanted you to sail through rough seas and turn into an immortal."
Su Beiming...no, Su Linyuan still looks at him with a loving expression. His voice sounds the same as always.
"Grandfather..."
Su Chengyu kneels down. He had never met his parents and didn’t know who they were. He had been brought up by his grandfather, and their bond was deep.
Certain parts of Su Linyuan’s face, like his nose and eyebrows, are strikingly similar to his own.
"Stand up, my good child," says Su Linyuan.
Su Chengyu stands up and sits in the pavilion, full of hope. "Grandfather, are you really... dead? You must have been a great cultivator. How could you have died so easily?"
"Everyone lives, and everyone dies. Only immortals do not die. I am a man, not an immortal, so, of course, I died. I know that you have many questions, and I will answer them all now."
Su Linyuan’s phantom sits down opposite Su Chengyu.
"Our Su family is one of the Nine Ancient Clans, with a legacy dating back to ancient times. Members of the ancient clans are inherently powerful with extraordinary talents. However, I was an anomaly, struggling to understand Daoism and thus, deemed as the clan’s failure, the janitor of the clan’s library."
"In the library, with nothing much to do, I read books every day. One day, I inadvertently understood the principles of Daoism. Knowing my talent was ordinary and realizing I had nobody to rely on in the clan, I sought solace in the company of books."
"The more books I read, I unknowingly ascended through the realms. I quickly broke through the Foundation Establishment Realm and then the Tongxuan Realm. Having read all the books in the library, I decided to step out and seek books elsewhere."
"Grandfather, what was your cultivation level when you left the library?" Su Chengyu inquires.
"The Hollow Realm," replies Su Linyuan.
Reading can lead to the Hollow Realm? Su Chengyu thinks to himself. Books indeed contain the path to cultivation!
After the Hollow Realm, the next stage is the Earth Immortal. The Earth Immortal is the highest level for a cultivator and is equivalent to the Martial God in martial arts, both of which are referred to as the Land Immortal.
His grandfather was indeed a great cultivator who, upon leaving the clan’s library, had become a Hollow Realm expert.
"Did members of your clan know that you had become a Hollow Realm expert?" Su Chengyu continues.
"They didn’t. In their eyes, I was still the disgrace of the clan, unable to comprehend or enter Daoism. Hence, I left the clan to wander and practice elsewhere. The year I left happened to be a period of worldwide chaos—a war broke out. Enemies invaded Xia Country, massacring innocent civilians."
Su Chengyu, having learnt history, knows the era Su Linyuan is referring to—an era of worldwide warfare and a period of tremendous change for Xia Country.
"I met a group of idealistic individuals who told me of their vision—to defeat the enemy, protect our sacred land, rebuild a strong nation, ensure peace and prosperity for the people, and rid the world of evil and the supernatural. I found their vision intriguing and joined their cause to assist them wholeheartedly."
"The war lasted for twenty years. Throughout that period, our group grew strength to strength. We slayed demons, purged witches, I advanced to the Earth Immortal Realm, and fought numerous battles against the enemy’s cultivators and martial arts experts. Looking back at those tumultuous twenty years, I still feel it was the most beautiful experience of my life."
Su Chengyu would never have imagined that his grandfather was a powerful Earth Immortal cultivator.
He was denigrated as a failure, unable to comprehend or enter Daoism by his clan, yet he had become a Land Immortal.
It was indeed a legend. No wonder Su Linyuan feels nostalgic when speaking of those times.
"The war finally ended, and the world returned to temporary peace. However, evil supernatural beings still lurked, and foreign enemies were on the lookout. Internal conflicts and external threats still plagued Xia Country. So, my friends and I founded the Demon Slayer Department and the Dragon Soul Department. The Demon Slayer Department was responsible for eradicating demons, while the Dragon Soul Department handled foreign threats and internal traitors."
"You founded the Demon Slayer Department and Dragon Soul Department?!"
Su Chengyu finds it hard to believe. The two most formidable departments in Xia Country—the Demon Slayer Department and the Dragon Soul Department—were founded by his grandfather, Su Linyuan.
"My friends and I founded those departments together. I was in charge of the Demon Slayer Department, and they ran the Dragon Soul Department," says Su Linyuan.
"What happened next?"
Su Chengyu can feel his blood boiling, floored by his grandfather’s thrilling story. He can hardly keep his excitement in check as he waits eagerly for the rest of the tale, his grandfather’s unsung history that’ll never be recorded.
