Chapter 1645: Chapter 1646: The Root of All Things
"Your keen eyes are impressive, but isn’t your courage a bit too much?"
The radiant woman cloaked in green light waved her hand grandly, and countless white foxes materialized, rushing toward Cui Manlou.
In the blink of an eye, Cui Manlou merged his form and dismissed Yan Ruyu’s dazzling facade. After revealing his true self, he waved his hand and instantly scattered all the white foxes.
"If it were the Green Hillock Empress of old, I naturally wouldn’t dare act so boldly. But now, you’re merely a fragment of God’s Soul. Aren’t your words a bit too self-aggrandizing?"
If it were truly the appearance of the Demon God, Cui Manlou knew it would be an unmatched force he couldn’t resist.
However, he was certain there wouldn’t be any true Demon God buried in this graveyard of the Qingqiu Mausoleum.
The phantom before him, no matter how lifelike, could only be a remnant soul of the Green Hillock Empress from ages past.
Nonetheless, what Cui Manlou didn’t foresee was the graveyard of Qingqiu actually acknowledging a little fox named Bai Huang. Moreover, the one who responded turned out to be the most illustrious of the Qingqiu Fox Clan’s legacy: the Green Hillock Empress.
"Cui Manlou, perhaps it’s you who gives yourself too much credit? Even if you had a thousand lives, ten thousand lives, in this situation, do you truly think you can act with impunity?"
The speaker was Bai Qiu standing to the side. Although her earlier probing confirmed Cui Manlou’s techniques and strength exceeded her own, with the aid of a fragment of the Demon God’s God’s Soul, she didn’t believe she couldn’t detain Cui Manlou.
Cui Manlou merely chuckled upon hearing those words, refraining from retorting. Instead, he turned toward Bai Qiu and queried, "Was it Su Chengyu who brought you here? That Bai Qiu who stirred such a change? What exactly is that thing, and what’s Su Chengyu’s connection to the Qingqiu Fox Clan?"
Bai Qiu sneered in return, "Haven’t you always thought yourself quite formidable? Always putting on airs as if you know everything? And yet, you have things you’re clueless about?"
Cui Manlou blinked and didn’t respond immediately. The legacy of the Demonic Path had indeed revealed many secrets unknown to ordinary people.
Over the years, as the leader of the Demonic Path, he further built an extensive information network, unraveling a wealth of hidden truths.
But human effort always has its limits. Moreover, the Demonic Path had been forced to act secretly in the shadows for years. For Cui Manlou to uncover certain truths often required significant costs—such as lowering himself to negotiate with Su Chengyu.
Still, despite agreeing to dealings with Su Chengyu, in his heart, Cui Manlou never truly viewed Su Chengyu as a serious threat.
Merely a Demon Slayer Bureau Emissary.
Even if he bore some degree of fortune, so what?
Could he possibly compare to Ye Qingci, or Long Xuan, individuals inherently destined to shoulder fate from birth?
In Cui Manlou’s eyes, the number of young people genuinely worth his attention in the world had been but a mere few.
He acknowledged Su Chengyu’s talent, but in Cui Manlou’s view, Su Chengyu still couldn’t squeeze into that tiny select group.
And now, Cui Manlou realized he might have been wrong.
Resolute in his thoughts, Cui Manlou turned his gaze toward the ethereal figure of the Qingqiu Empress who stood protectively before Bai Huang. He spoke softly, "Your Majesty the Empress, do you truly believe this little fox can bear the burden of revitalizing the Qingqiu Fox Clan?"
"Believe? I don’t need to believe him. All I know is that the one I trust believes he can— and that’s sufficient."
Her words affirmed Cui Manlou’s suspicions. He blinked and finally said, "The one you trust is Su Chengyu."
"None of your business! Get lost!"
In a cold tone devoid of extraneous words, the Green Hillock Empress raised her hand. In an instant, innumerable wraiths surged upward from the earth, coalescing into a towering stele that bore down on Cui Manlou to suppress him.
As Cui Manlou faced the might of an Earth Immortal-level technique, he took a deep breath, recognizing there was no room for negotiation left with this group. Raising his left hand, he snapped his fingers and activated the Heaven-reaching Ghost-killing Formation enveloping the Qingqiu Mausoleum.
Dark light erupted, dragon roars echoed from afar, and frenzied demonic qi surged within the mausoleum like countless razor-sharp blades, causing the already shadowy figure of the Qingqiu Empress to fade even further.
"Ao Tian!"
"Auntie, stop calling me! I’m really trying my best! This formation is way stronger than I expected; I can’t handle it alone! Come over and help me!"
Upon hearing this, Bai Qiu furrowed her brow and glanced at Yu Yanshu beside her.
This time, before Yu Yanshu could respond, the Qingqiu Empress’s voice sounded directly in Bai Qiu’s mind.
"Go without hesitation; I’ll keep these two children safe here."
"But—"
"Ultimately, I am but a remnant soul. You two are the true keys to resolving this crisis. Remember: The formation itself isn’t what’s truly terrifying—it’s the one wielding it."
Her words instantly awakened Bai Qiu. She looked up toward the hazy figure of the Qingqiu Empress in the distance and, as she faintly saw her nod, Bai Qiu abandoned all hesitation and turned to head directly toward Long Ao Tian’s location.
Noticing Bai Qiu vanish from his sight, Cui Manlou sneered coldly and directed his gaze at the spectral shadow of the Qingqiu Empress. He spoke in a frigid tone, "Your Majesty the Empress, do you truly intend to stop me single-handedly? Aren’t you being overly confident?"
"It’s not confidence. It’s understanding."
With icy disdain in her voice, the Qingqiu Empress spared no courtesy. Though she knew something of the role this man played within the Demonic Path today, it didn’t change the contempt she held within her heart.
"For someone like you, that man slew countless in his time."
Buzz!
The moment her words fell, an overwhelming killing intent materialized beside Cui Manlou. Without giving him any chance to react, the form he had just consolidated exploded on the spot, disintegrating into a cloud of blood mist, leaving no trace behind.
"Is it over?"
This sudden scene left Yu Yanshu astounded. She could clearly see that everything within the destroyed body had been utterly annihilated in that strike.
"The Demonic Path is never that simple."
The Qingqiu Empress’s calm voice rang out, drawing Yu Yanshu’s attention elsewhere. She then noticed, in another corner, Cui Manlou emerging slowly, clearly exhausted.
While his appearance seemed unchanged, Yu Yanshu could tell that his condition was far below its prior state.
"Girl, remember this: True practitioners of the Demonic Path, even if they haven’t attested to eternal life, have already achieved what’s called immortality and indestructibility. In essence, they’ve become beings entirely separate from humans—akin to the Demon Clan, Blood Clan, Nether Clan, and those foreign species that drifted into this realm from others."
Cui Manlou sneered mockingly upon hearing this, "Your Majesty the Empress truly has vast knowledge, to even know of this."
The Qingqiu Empress had no intention of paying him any heed. Instead, she turned to Yu Yanshu and continued asking, "Though humans and demons can coexist, humans and the Demonic Path can never coexist. Do you know why?"
Yu Yanshu shook her head.
"Because heaven and earth give birth to all living things, and all things have their roots."
