Chapter 1641: Chapter 1642: The Secret History of the Demon Clan
With a cold and indifferent gaze, he looked toward Bai Huang, who had already entered the Qingqiu Mausoleum Trial. Naturally, he was well aware of what was happening over there.
In truth, the moment the burial chamber deep within the Qingqiu Mausoleum was opened, the trial had already begun. Now, they stood at the final and most critical step.
Yet even so, Chou Manlou showed no desire to intervene at all.
It wasn’t because of Yu Yanshu; rather, he fully understood that the person over there wasn’t deserving.
"Bai Huang isn’t as pitiful as you make him out to be."
Upon hearing this, Chou Manlou chuckled softly. Casting another glance at Bai Huang, he then replied calmly.
"Indeed, his talent isn’t too poor. If this were an era of prosperity, while I wouldn’t dare to call him a Demon God, if luck were on his side, becoming a Demon Emperor wouldn’t be out of reach. Even reaching the level of a Great Demon isn’t entirely impossible. However, the times have changed. Someone like him won’t gain the recognition of those people."
"You’re just fear-mongering!"
Yu Yanshu wasn’t so easily intimidated by his words and resolutely retorted.
Chou Manlou, however, wasn’t in a rush. Instead of offering an immediate explanation, he posed a question in return.
"Lord of the Sect, when do you believe the decline of the Demon Clan began? Was it the great war a hundred years ago? Or perhaps it stems from the actions of the Demon Slayer Department in recent decades?"
Yu Yanshu didn’t answer. She knew that neither of the two options Chou Manlou proposed pinpointed the real issue.
The great war a hundred years ago and the influence of the Demon Slayer Department indeed dealt a severe blow to the Demon Clan’s vitality.
But the Demon Clan’s true decline predates all of that. In fact, one might even say that the grand scale of the war from a century ago was largely due to the Demon Clan already being in an irreversible state of decay.
If it hadn’t been a matter of desperation, why would the Demon Clan have fought so fiercely, gambling everything for a slim chance at survival?
"After the era of the Three Emperors and Five Sovereigns, the Human Clan officially became the rightful rulers of this world. The existence of the Ancient Clans further safeguarded the humans, allowing them to thrive magnificently even as nature’s spiritual energy waned, with competing ideologies flourishing everywhere."
"The Ancient Clans weren’t the deciding factor."
Yu Yanshu interjected to correct him, clearly disagreeing with this point.
"Perhaps not. It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that in this increasingly hostile environment, only the Human Clan has adapted and prospered. The root of the Demon Clan’s downfall lies precisely in this."
"What exactly are you trying to say?"
Yu Yanshu frowned, increasingly feeling that Chou Manlou’s words had a deeper, hidden agenda beyond merely discussing the plight of the Demon Clan.
"Don’t be anxious, Lord of the Sect. If you don’t want to hear about that, let’s return to the matter of this little fox. Over the course of countless millennia, the Demon Clan has indeed undergone massive decline. However, while people may perish and tea may grow cold, inheritances do not simply vanish. The bloodline legacies of the Ancient Great Demons are especially tenacious and difficult to sever. But do you know why these bloodlines, despite their nobility, slowly vanished? Why even their legacies left no trace?"
Yu Yanshu shook her head. This matter concerned the hidden truths of the Demon Clan, secrets that were beyond Su Chengyu’s reach — let alone hers.
"Better none than substandard."
Chou Manlou’s gaze fell upon Bai Huang as he spoke coldly. "For the Demon Clan, the concepts of bloodline and kinship hold far greater importance than they do for humans. Humans can gather around sects, pass down teachings and knowledge, and share various cultivation methods with inner disciples, outer disciples, or even nominal ones."
"But the Demon Clan refuses to do so. Those who are not of our kin will never be entrusted with the core parts of our inheritance."
"Bai Huang has the pure bloodline of the Qingqiu Fox Clan!"
Chou Manlou smiled faintly at that and continued, "Indeed, he does. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to open the door to this burial chamber, bringing us to this place. On this point, I must thank this little fox, as well as Su Chengyu for the thought he put into this. But as I said before, he is unworthy."
"Lord of the Sect, perhaps you’re unaware — there’s nothing inherently special about the construction of this place. Its sole unique aspect is that it gathers the lingering remnants of the Demon Gods from past generations of the Qingqiu Fox Clan. If these remnants acknowledge someone, that person may obtain the Qingqiu Fox Clan’s millennia of accumulations — all their treasures... but they will also bear the responsibility of revitalizing the entire Qingqiu Fox Clan. Such a grave burden is akin to founding a new sect."
"But have you considered, what if he fails to establish that sect?"
"Fail?"
"Yes. As I’ve said, the Demon Clan is incredibly jealous and exclusionary toward outsiders. They would rather bury their clan’s treasures deep underground, never to be seen, than allow even a single magical treasure or secret technique to fall into another clan’s hands. This mindset was the very reason the Demon Clan once rose to unmatched power tens of thousands of years ago. It’s also the reason they rapidly declined after the depletion of spiritual energy."
Yu Yanshu’s brows furrowed tightly. While she didn’t fully trust every word from Chou Manlou, the tragic loss of numerous Demon Clan legacies over the ages was an undeniable truth.
In fact, even in matters of human inheritance, meticulous restrictions were the norm. Rather than allowing their knowledge to be obtained by outsiders, many would sooner destroy it outright.
As for the Demon Clan...
Yu Yanshu’s gaze darted toward Bai Huang with a hint of unease. Detecting her wavering resolve, Chou Manlou pressed on.
"In truth, obtaining the legacy isn’t as complicated as it seems. After all, he already opened the door to this place. My elaborate efforts to come here were meant to demonstrate our sincerity. If you, Lord of the Sect, agree to join us, not only will I spare Su Chengyu, but I’ll also ensure that little fellow gains access to everything here without any hindrance."
"Of course... if the Lord of the Sect so desires, all of this could even go to Su Chengyu instead."
Yu Yanshu abruptly raised her head, glaring at Chou Manlou with a dead seriousness as she firmly stated, "I’ve already told you — that’s impossible."
Seeing Yu Yanshu remain resolute, showing no intent to relent, Chou Manlou blinked and sighed lightly. "Is that so? So, the Lord of the Sect is content to watch them all die because of you?"
Chou Manlou snapped his fingers once more—his third time doing so. This time, however, there was no new message delivered with the gesture.
Instead, what followed was a deafening dragon’s roar that resounded through the heavens.
In the distance, Long Ao Tian, completely trapped by the Heaven-reaching Ghost-killing Formation, suddenly looked stricken. An ominous black mist began to emerge from all directions, surging toward his body.
The golden scales of the dragon were swiftly tainted gray by the black mist, the alarming spread covering half of Long Ao Tian’s body in an instant.
"Stop this at once!"
Yu Yanshu shouted in agitation, but Chou Manlou, having laid sufficient groundwork, showed no inclination to relent this time.
With a faint smile, he gazed at Yu Yanshu, silently watching events unfold, steering everything toward his anticipated outcome.
After a round of probing exchanges with her, Chou Manlou was well aware that he couldn’t immediately alter Yu Yanshu’s mind or beliefs. What he sought was merely for her to yield, right here and now.
Yu Yanshu anxiously lifted her head. The dragon’s roars echoed in the distance, while the projection before her showed Su Chengyu locked in a grueling battle. The dual torment of the two scenes pressed down upon her. With trembling lips, she finally opened her mouth.
"I..."
