Chapter 1622: Chapter 1623: Critical Tasks

"What do you mean by that?"

Luo Changping stared intently at Su Chengyu, clearly unnerved by his words.

Though Luo Changping had considered the possibility of Su Chengyu’s arrival, he had never imagined that Su Chengyu would so brazenly enter his residence. What shocked him even more was that his own daughter seemed more eager to meet Su Chengyu than he was.

Luo Changping had, of course, noticed his daughter’s subtle movements lately. However, the situation on Xu Nanzhi’s side was precariously urgent, leaving Luo Changping barely able to manage his own affairs. Thus, he had pushed aside concerns about his daughter’s behavior.

After all, in his eyes, Luo Ling’er was still just a child.

What significant trouble could a child possibly stir up, even during such a critical moment?

Su Chengyu blinked and asked, "In your eyes, what kind of person is Luo Ling’er?"

Instead of directly answering, Su Chengyu posed a question to Luo Changping.

After pondering for a moment, Luo Changping replied, "Her aptitude is average, but she’s exceptionally clever. That’s why I’ve been lenient in disciplining her over the years."

"Indeed, she’s quite clever, or else those people wouldn’t have taken an interest in her."

Su Chengyu’s words made Luo Changping anxious. No longer willing to dance around the topic, he pressed further.

"What exactly are you trying to say? What’s Ling’er scheming behind my back? It couldn’t be..."

Seeing the fear in Luo Changping’s eyes, Su Chengyu chuckled and said, "Relax, it’s not as bad as you think. At the very least, she hasn’t colluded with that Demonic Path."

The answer he dreaded most was ruled out, and with that assurance, Luo Changping sank back into his chair.

In Xia Country’s ancient history, countless factions and sects had risen and fallen, each claiming legitimacy at one time or another. The only exception was the Demonic Path, which had never been accepted as rightful contenders.

"So, is Ling’er working as a mole for another Ancient Clan?"

"Elder Changping, it seems you’re well aware of the Luo Clan’s current predicament."

Luo Changping waved dismissively, unwilling to acknowledge the flattery. Taking a deep breath, he said,

"Despite our efforts to conceal it, the bloodline continuation of the Luo Clan has drawn scrutiny, especially after Lady Saintess revealed herself during the recent journey to the Kunwu Realm. It’s unsurprising that other Ancient Clans have taken notice. Despite the Luo Clan’s attempts to foster alliances, it’s evident that some still choose to kick us while we’re down."

"When the Luo Clan was mighty, no one dared to act against it. When it was weakened and bowed in surrender, no one sought to destroy it. But now, with the Luo Clan poised to rise again, how many would welcome such a prospect?"

"Which clan?"

Luo Changping glared coldly at Su Chengyu and asked.

Su Chengyu blinked and said, "Does Elder Changping truly care? Aren’t you already standing on Xu Nanzhi’s side, opposing the entire Luo Clan?"

"It’s different."

Luo Changping spoke decisively. "If the Luo Clan were to fall into Lady Saintess’s hands, it would merely be another way for the clan to continue. The Martial God Bloodline wouldn’t be lost. As long as Lady Saintess reaches the Martial God Realm, the Luo Clan’s bloodline can still flourish."

"And the so-called method of bloodline continuation?"

Su Chengyu furrowed his brows in visible confusion.

"Merely a desperate measure implemented by our ancestors, a lineage enforcement born of necessity. Yet among the major Ancient Clans, it has become regarded as tradition. After all, entering the Earth Immortal Realm is exceedingly difficult, and achieving the Martial God Realm is even harder. Even those born with Divine Souls and Divine Bones find it overwhelmingly reliant on fate to step into that One Realm."

"But Xu Nanzhi’s talent isn’t lacking, is it?"

Su Chengyu spoke coldly.

He had encountered Xu Nanzhi, garbed in purple robes, in the Kunwu Realm. Though parts of his memory had been erased, Xu Nanzhi’s potential had been fully unlocked after the Luo Clan’s trials. While she might fall slightly short of Lin An, whose fortune was entwined with the True Dragon, compared to others, she was undeniably exceptional.

Ten years at the earliest, decades at most—Xu Nanzhi would surely ascend to the Earth Immortal Realm.

"Precisely. That’s one of the reasons I chose to follow Lady Saintess. Unfortunately, the Elder Council is growing impatient. Who can predict what the Luo Clan will look like in a few decades? They lack the confidence to protect Lady Saintess during that time. And the most crucial factor is..."

Luo Changping suddenly stopped mid-sentence, then turned to Su Chengyu.

Su Chengyu paused before breaking into a bitter laugh. "And this whole mess involves me?"

Luo Changping nodded. "The stronger one becomes, the harder they are to control. Lady Saintess is deeply infatuated with you, and your actions in the Capital City have made us wary. Who can guarantee that, after ten more years, Lady Saintess would still willingly dedicate herself to continuing the Luo Clan’s Martial God Bloodline?"

Su Chengyu sneered at this. "And isn’t all of this because your Luo Clan’s method of bloodline inheritance is inherently flawed? If you hadn’t cast Xu Nanzhi into the mundane world to begin with, how would things have come to this?"

Luo Changping fell silent, offering no response.

He wasn’t the architect of these rules. Even as an Elder of the council, he lacked the authority or ability to alter the inherited practices of the Luo Clan.

"Discussing this further is pointless. Ultimately, Xu Nanzhi has done nothing wrong. She never should have been made into the Luo Clan’s sacrificial pawn."

Understanding Luo Changping’s constraints, Su Chengyu refrained from heaping further blame on him and changed the subject.

"Indeed, Lady Saintess is innocent. With her talents and character, I believe she will lead the Luo Clan toward a brighter future."

Su Chengyu glanced at Luo Changping and questioned, "Has Xu Nanzhi already agreed to truly become a Luo clanswoman?"

Luo Changping nodded. "She did. Lady Saintess declared that, under her leadership, the Luo Clan would not remain as it is today."

Su Chengyu blinked, contemplating Xu Nanzhi’s intentions. After a deep sigh, he couldn’t understand why Xu Nanzhi would bear such a heavy burden on her shoulders.

"Xu Nanzhi, she..."

"Rest assured, Lady Saintess is safe for now. Although the Elder Council is eager for her to advance to the Hollow Vacuum Realm, they still lack a crucial artifact. Until that item is secured, she’s in no immediate danger."

"That item—is it in the Qingqiu Mausoleum?"

Su Chengyu immediately grasped the implication and asked Luo Changping.

Luo Changping nodded. "Since you know of that place, you should understand it is the last remnant of the Qingqiu Fox Clan. Legend has it that their final Secret Treasure is buried deep beneath the earth. If the Green Hillock Empress truly didn’t take the Heavenly Fox Orb with her all those years ago, then that treasure can only lie within the tomb."

Su Chengyu blinked, deliberating briefly before materializing the Heavenly Fox Orb, which had already merged into his Sea of Consciousness, in his palm.

As the milky-white glow of the orb radiated softly, Luo Changping stared in shock. His eyes widened as he looked at Su Chengyu in disbelief and exclaimed,

"How... How could that treasure be in your possession?!"
