Chapter 1620: Chapter 1621: Resolution

"Are you certain the Elder Council is now too consumed to focus on anything else?"

On the road to Qingqiu Mausoleum, Su Chengyu turned his head and spoke to Luo Nanping.

"One hundred percent!"

Luo Nanping said confidently, then took out a document he had handwritten and handed it to Su Chengyu.

"This is a record I copied from the Elder Council, listing the names and strengths of each elder. Beyond this, I don’t have the authority to look at more, so..."

Su Chengyu furrowed his brows slightly, though not out of suspicion regarding Luo Nanping’s words.

He could tell that Luo Nanping was of the same character as his father, Luo Zongyuan—deep down, always prioritizing their own interests above all else.

Since he chose to return honestly and report to him, there was no way he would place his own life in unnecessary danger. This intelligence was most likely truly obtained by him.

What puzzled Su Chengyu, however, was how Luo Nanping managed to acquire this information so effortlessly.

With a casual glance at the contents of the document, it didn’t look like anything confidential. Even so, Su Chengyu still found it hard to believe Luo Nanping could directly know such details.

"You don’t think I’d lie to you, do you? Do you have any idea how much risk I took to get this?"

"Oh? How much risk?"

Su Chengyu’s counter-question caused Luo Nanping to freeze momentarily. He tried to make his experience sound as treacherous as possible, but aside from being questioned briefly upon entry, he hadn’t actually encountered much resistance.

Seeing Luo Nanping’s reaction, Su Chengyu let out a cold laugh. Yet in his heart, he had gained a clearer sense of the situation. This intelligence, which evidently required little actual effort to obtain, became even more dubious in his mind.

"The document you got may not even be authentic."

"How could it not be? I personally—"

Luo Nanping began to vehemently defend himself, only to suddenly realize something and stare at Su Chengyu. "You’re saying... the Elder Council deliberately let me bring this information to you?"

"Hm, it seems you’re not entirely hopeless yet."

Su Chengyu cast Luo Nanping a glance, speaking with a cold sneer.

Luo Nanping’s expression turned vacant, and he dropped down to sit on the ground. "If that’s the case, doesn’t the clan already know I betrayed them?"

"Why panic? I only said it’s possible. Besides, they didn’t strike you down immediately, which clearly means they don’t care much about you. After all, whether you live or die... is it even important to the Luo Clan right now?"

Su Chengyu’s calm rhetorical question made Luo Nanping feel all the more unsettled. If the clan even refrained from killing him to sever loose ends, what prospect did he have of survival once everything was over—given he was a traitor?

Unlike his father, Luo Zongyuan—one of the elite pillars of the clan—he held neither talent nor ability, merely an insignificant second-generation member of the Luo Clan. Suddenly, Luo Nanping raised his head and looked at Su Chengyu.

"Are you trying to turn me against them?"

"You think too highly of yourself. I’m merely offering a small reminder about the information you provided. Besides, what you offered is indeed important; Qingqiu Mausoleum truly is a place I must visit."

Squinting his eyes, Su Chengyu considered his previous plans. Based on his understanding of the Luo Clan’s situation, his initial priority was to head straight to Zixuan Hall. Even with heavy defenses there, he still intended to take the risk, knowing the gathered intelligence would provide better opportunities.

However, upon learning of Qingqiu Mausoleum, Su Chengyu had no choice but to alter his primary objective.

At this critical juncture, the person who might appear there was someone Su Chengyu could think of with certainty.

Though it was earlier than Su Chengyu had anticipated, overall, it was still good news. At least he wouldn’t have to worry about Yu Yanshu and the others running directly into members of the Demonic Path. However...

"I hope it’s just me overthinking things."

Su Chengyu sighed deeply, then glanced at the location Luo Zongyuan had disclosed to him.

At this moment, despite his urgent desire to find Nan Zhi, rationality told him the timing wasn’t right.

Qingqiu Mausoleum might be a trap—but Zixuan Hall posed even greater peril.

After the Elder Council’s attack, their lack of effort to search for him could only mean the attackers were now targeting Zixuan Hall, forcing the Council to shift more manpower there for its defense.

Taking advantage of the chaos to sneak in could indeed be a viable option. Yet Luo Nanping’s discovery had caused him to revise this plan.

"Let’s go."

Su Chengyu stood and addressed the still visibly shaken Luo Nanping.

"Go... where?"

Still alarmed, Luo Nanping hesitated as he looked at Su Chengyu. Clearly, he wished to avoid following him further.

Su Chengyu chuckled lightly. "If you leave me now, do you think you’ll find a better way out? Besides, for safety’s sake, there’s no way I’d let you leave at this point."

Luo Nanping’s fear was genuine, not feigned. Su Chengyu couldn’t be sure he wouldn’t return to the Luo Clan after his departure, which meant keeping him close was the best alternative besides killing him outright.

"It’s convenient—I’ve still got another person inside my Small Opening; the two of you can keep each other company. A word of caution: don’t try anything foolish in there. While I can’t monitor every moment, the Artifact Spirit within my Small Opening will ensure order."

Without allowing Luo Nanping to object, Su Chengyu sent him into the Small Opening within the Dragon Slayer Sword.

"Still don’t kill him. Your foolish sentimentality will be your downfall."

Heeding the Heaven-Mending Stone’s remark, Su Chengyu’s mind state remained unmoved as he replied calmly, "I’ve already said—Luo Nanping’s crimes don’t warrant death. Even if he must pay the price, that decision belongs to Nan Zhi."

"What if that woman dies?"

This seemingly casual question pierced the deepest vulnerability within Su Chengyu, a subject he refused to face.

Ever since arriving at the Luoshui region, Su Chengyu had been deliberately avoiding that possibility.

He knew he was late.

He knew the Luo Clan had already gambled everything.

He knew, even more so, that overthrowing the Luo Clan as he was now was nothing but a foolish dream.

Even so, he had come—not just to witness, but, like his father before him, to personally rescue the one he loved from that cage.

No matter how resolute his heart was, Su Chengyu couldn’t deny the tremendous risks. It was far beyond his control.

He couldn’t prevent events from spiraling toward his worst fears.

The journey passed in silence, until they reached his first destination. Standing before the residence of another Elder from the Luo Clan, Su Chengyu spoke calmly.

"If it truly comes to that, even if I can’t do it now, someday I’ll ensure the entire Luo Clan is buried with her."
