Chapter 1339: Chapter 1339: Slaves and Fairy Servants

"Brother, you have a good eye. This combat technique was a legendary warfare tactic that swept through the nations of Britannia centuries ago, now lost to time. I came across it by a stroke of luck. Interested?"

"After last century’s transformation of Britannia into Da Bang Country, the Military Formation Techniques were consolidated and planned out, evolving into a new generation of systems with far superior strength. If this technique is from the past, wouldn’t it be outdated?"

The merchant’s face turned red as he was about to argue, but Su Chengyu continued, "The precursor state to Da Bang Country did indeed dominate a large region south of the Dark Sea for a time. However, it ultimately stopped at the shores of the Dark Sea. The fundamental reason is that Military Formation Techniques were never known for their lethality. This technique, on the other hand, clearly leads to heavy losses even while inflicting casualties on the enemy. Are you sure it comes from the Britannia Empire?"

The merchant’s expression became odd. Upon seeing the change in Su Chengyu’s face, he realized that he was indeed dealing with an expert.

"Your accent doesn’t sound like you’re from the Bei Luo people, does it?"

"Does my origin matter? What’s important is the origin of this combat technique."

Su Chengyu replied with a smile.

"What do you think, then?"

Su Chengyu glanced at the book named the Great Circular Square Formation and said softly, "If it isn’t surprising, this should be a technique once used by the Bei Luo Empire. It was discarded by the military due to its excessive lethality. Saying it’s lost might be an exaggeration, but it is indeed known by few."

The merchant glanced down and then raised his head to ask, "The technique used by the Fierce Liquor Fighters of the Bei Luo Empire a hundred years ago?"

Su Chengyu nodded, "If my judgment is correct."

The Bei Luo Empire’s Fierce Liquor Fighters were the most famous special forces unit in the Empire a hundred years ago, known for their performance on the battlefield. Often with inconspicuous abilities and numbers, they would defeat enemies far outnumbering themselves.

However, each battle led to heavy casualties. The recklessness of their tactics meant this group of Golden Warriors quickly faded from the stage of history.

The Bei Luo merchant looked at the book with regret, "So it is. I didn’t expect to have this battle technique of our veterans, yet know less about it than you, a Xia Citizen."

Su Chengyu raised an eyebrow, "What makes you think I’m from Xia Country?"

The corner of the merchant’s mouth twitched, "Only you Xia Citizens go about things in such a roundabout way."

Su Chengyu chuckled without confirming or denying. Xia Country had a long history, and indeed, after learning many of its principles, one was likely to become a person who thinks a lot. This didn’t mean, however, that people from other nations thought any less.

Wasn’t the merchant before him able to guess his identity with just a simple probe?

"I’d like to buy this book of Military Formation Technique. Name your price."

The merchant pondered for a moment and said, "A Superior Grade Magic Artifact from your Xia Country’s perspective, plus a top-quality female slave handed over personally."

"Female slave?"

Su Chengyu’s brow furrowed. The Superior Grade Magic Artifact was no big deal, but the mention of a female slave was unexpected to Su Chengyu.

Even though he was aware that human trading was supported in this place, he had not anticipated that people could also serve as currency.

Seeming to guess that Su Chengyu did not have one, the merchant’s lips curled up, "Just around the corner in the alley there is a slave market. I can take you to have a look first, and if possible, I would like to have a glance too."

"There’s no need."

Su Chengyu flatly rejected the Bei Luo merchant’s offer, stating coldly, "I will not trade a living person with you."

The Bei Luo merchant looked at Su Chengyu with some confusion, unsure why Su Chengyu would say such a thing.

Before he could ask, Su Chengyu spoke first: "How about I exchange a heavenly-level martial arts technique for it? Forgive my candor, but whether this military formation technique can be considered heavenly-level is still up for debate, while the technique I offer is definitely one of the top-tier existences within heavenly-level martial arts."

The Bei Luo trader hesitated before asking further: "What type?"

"You pick the category," Su Chengyu said boldly.

"Deal!" With that one word, the trader dispelled all hesitation and agreed to it.

In the end, the trader chose a hammer technique, not a heavy hammer but a double hammer combat technique. Su Chengyu then selected a paired mace technique from the Supreme Daoist Scripture to give to him.

Although there was still a significant difference, compared to single-handed hammer techniques, this set was evidently more in line with the trader’s needs.

Once the trader confirmed the value of the mace technique given by Su Chengyu, joy filled his eyes, with no thought of reneging on the deal.

After all, by any account, this deal was a big win for him.

"Brother, take care of the item. Since our transaction went smoothly, let me give you one more piece of advice: ’When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ These local customs have been around for hundreds of years, and even if you don’t accept them, you should at least understand them."

Su Chengyu, knowing what the trader was hinting at, didn’t say much and simply nodded slightly, saying: "Thank you."

After speaking, the trader quickly left. Su Chengyu took another brief look at the grand military formation technique, and from within his body, the uninterested voice of the Heaven-Mending Stone sounded.

"When you have that spare time, you might as well purchase more items that can speed up my recovery. I can feel I’m at a bottleneck."

The Heaven-Mending Stone was now capable of independently handling any level of Martial Emperor, and one more step forward would grant it the power to withstand Hollow Vacuum on its own.

It sounded indeed tempting, but Su Chengyu was well aware...

"Can you break through if I get you another stalk of Dragon Saliva Grass?"

"There’s a little bit of hope," came the response.

Su Chengyu sneered: "Then we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. For something of that caliber, even if I really want to buy it, it would cost me an arm and a leg."

The Heaven-Mending Stone indeed suggested an alluring prospect, but he knew well that a bottleneck is not so easily broken, especially for a divine object like the Heaven-Mending Stone. Without sufficient opportunity, advancing further was easier said than done.

The disheartened Heaven-Mending Stone didn’t bother to respond, while Su Chengyu unwittingly arrived in front of the alleyway mentioned by the Bei Luo trader and stopped in his tracks.

Before him stood numerous cages, and within the enormous black iron cages, countless slaves dressed in tattered garments were imprisoned.

Even though the temperature in Brusa Square was much higher than in Linbei City, these commoners in ragged clothing still shivered with pale faces, many of them close to lifeless.

"Little Shi, is human trafficking common in the Immortal World as well?"

"Not common, but indeed it exists. After all, there are all sorts of people in the Immortal World, and they need some to do the menial work, to serve, to test medicines, and even serve as alchemic furnaces... Seeing all sorts of chaos becomes normal after a while. So, while the Immortal World does not condone it, there has never been a prohibition either."

"It appears that Immortals also have their own desires," Su Chengyu remarked coldly.

The Heaven-Mending Stone could see that Su Chengyu was somewhat angry, but it didn’t care and continued: "However, the Immortal World’s treatment of such people is not so cruel, after all. Many are chosen by Immortal Families; at a minimum, they could be a gatekeeper disciple, or if fortunate, enter the Inner Door, or even share a bed. Respect due to them is given. In the Immortal World, such people are referred to as Fairy Servants."
