Chapter 1331: Chapter 1331: Bei Luo Border Defense Army

Mo Ningchen forcefully held back a smile as he glanced at Su Chengyu. Su Chengyu felt a bit embarrassed; previously, being the only one aware of his own identity, he had no knowledge of the identities arranged for the two of them by the Demon Slayer Department.

"Mo Ningchen being my bodyguard is one thing, but a personal maid? What’s the situation here?"

Even though Su Chengyu had become a member of the Demon Slayer Department, he was still ranked lower than the both of them.

Yet now, the two were supposed to act as his bodyguards and maids, which seemed highly inappropriate no matter how one looked at it.

"Big brother Mo, what’s going on?"

Su Chengyu questioned Mo Ningchen.

Mo Ningchen chuckled lightly, "There’s no helping it. The Beitang Family insisted that only their direct lineage’s identity can be lent to you. It’s a necessary measure."

Su Chengyu swallowed nervously, finally realizing the situation, then looked at the two and said, "Then we can’t use any other identities?"

"One bodyguard, one maid, these are the identities least likely to raise suspicions. Making further changes would only complicate things unnecessarily."

You Ming spoke up proactively, seemingly indifferent to the arrangement. She, now dressed in ordinary clothes, moved behind Su Chengyu and said, "Official business is official business, don’t overthink it."

Su Chengyu turned to look at Mo Ningchen, who simply shrugged his shoulders, clearly not intending to say anything more.

"Let’s go. It’s not even certain if we can cross the border."

You Ming urged once more, and Su Chengyu could no longer object, taking the initiative to cross the national border.

Although it was just a few steps away, and there was no apparent change in the environmental factors such as climate and temperature, Su Chengyu could still sense a distinct difference. These few steps made it feel as though he was entering another realm.

He had felt this difference slightly in Dongying, but it was not very clear, while in the Bei Luo Empire it was incredibly distinct.

Was it the influence of national fortune?

National fortune protects only the country’s citizens. Within the borders of Xia Country, all things are influenced by its national fortune. Xia Citizens receive a mysterious protection, which, although still present outside of the country’s borders, inevitably weakens considerably. Moreover, the Bei Luo Empire, being a major country, exerts significantly greater suppression on foreigners than Dongying.

Mo Ningchen and You Ming, who were by his side, seemed to be well aware of this change and showed no particular reaction, walking behind Su Chengyu as usual.

The trio had advanced only a little over a hundred meters inside the Bei Luo Empire border when a group of well-trained soldiers surrounded them, questioning their identities using the Xia Country language, which was fairly fluent.

Mo Ningchen looked at Su Chengyu, who, grasping the situation immediately, stepped forward and said, "I am Bei Tang Yu of the Beitang Family, entering the country on family business. Here are my documents."

"Beitang Family?"

Among the soldiers, a figure resembling a squad leader stepped forward. He clearly recognized the name of the Beitang Family.

Positioned to the north of Xia Country, the Beitang Family, one of the Four-sided family, held considerable influence over the entire northern region, having maintained commercial relations with the Bei Luo Empire over the years. Thus, those stationed here were naturally familiar with the Beitang Family.

After briefly examining the documents that Su Chengyu handed over, the squad leader returned them and said, "Son of Beitang, I am Charles, captain of the Bei Luo Empire’s Thirteenth Border Defense Unit. The documents are in order, but if you wish to enter the Bei Luo Empire directly through here, you will still need General Lays’s personal approval for your passage."

Su Chengyu, unsurprised by this response, smiled and said, "Understood, please lead the way, Captain Charles."

Charles nodded, signaling the soldiers to let them pass. Then, he personally led the three of them towards the border defense troops’ station.

Su Chengyu secretly glanced at Mo Ningchen, who nodded and conveyed through a voice transmission, "The aura of the Martial God is among them. Unless there’s an error, this General is the Martial God."

"Please wait a moment; I’ll go and report your arrival."

As they arrived at the entrance to the border defense military camp and Charles was about to leave to report, a middle-aged man dressed in dark green military attire spoke up from the distance, "There’s no need. As esteemed guests, it is only proper that I personally welcome you. You must be the son of the Beitang family, right?"

Su Chengyu expressed surprise, "You know who I am?"

General Lays smiled and said, "Before your arrival, the Beitang family had already sent word to me. They said that a young member of their family would be coming to the Bei Luo Empire soon, looking to purchase a batch of medicinal materials. The elder of the Beitang family—his illness, has it not recovered yet?"

"The secret injury is difficult to heal. Though the condition is presently stable, completely eradicating it is still troublesome. There are several unique medicinal materials from the Dark Sea that are truly hard to find within the borders of Xia Country. It’s only out of necessity that I’ve come to the Bei Luo Empire to try my luck."

The Beitang family had contact with the Nether Clan in previous years, which was why they had the Northern Dark Stone. However, the matter of the elder being secretly injured in battle against the Nether Clan was no secret anymore.

"I see. Then I wish the son of the Beitang family good luck. Please wait here for a moment. I will personally sign the entry documents for you. The whole procedure should be done in about three hours. During this time, I must trouble you to temporarily stay with our troops."

"Then we are grateful to you, General Lays."

Su Chengyu thanked him and then led the two others to the quarters that had been arranged for them.

"This Lays is a bit peculiar."

No sooner had they entered the room than You Ming set up a barrier to conceal their aura, and spoke directly.

Mo Ningchen, standing alongside him, also nodded and said, "Indeed, the entry documents shouldn’t need as long as three hours to process. He’s clearly trying to deliberately detain us. Just what he plans to do is unknown."

Su Chengyu blinked and said, "But if the Beitang family was able to contact him, shouldn’t there be no problem with his identity?"

"It’s precisely because there are no problems that it’s the biggest problem."

You Ming’s words were incisive.

Mo Ningchen also nodded in agreement, "This guy speaks Xia language and he seems to know the situation of the Beitang family quite well. With his official Bei Luo status at this station, there are many things he could do without anybody noticing."

Su Chengyu looked at them both, puzzled by their caution, "You don’t think he’s going to take direct action against us, do you?"

You Ming glanced at Su Chengyu and said, "Once you’ve left the national boundary, you must be ready to face enemies on all sides, even allies who might rip up their alliance at any time and become outright enemies with Xia Country."

"But the other side doesn’t know our identities. Isn’t the price for such actions a bit too steep?" Su Chengyu still found it incomprehensible to retort.

From a benefit standpoint, General Lays had no reason to take action against them. Whether he knew the identity of the three of them or not, direct action could potentially lead to a very serious diplomatic incident.

Mo Ningchen, understanding what Su Chengyu was questioning, spoke softly, "What if the ones making a move aren’t from their military?"

Those words struck Su Chengyu like a revelation, and he looked out at the North Luo Soldiers patrolling normally and said, "Are you suggesting that this North Luo border defense military has long been colluding with someone else?"

"It may even go beyond that."

You Ming’s suspicions were not limited to the border defense military; she even suspected that the entire Bei Luo Empire might already be in cahoots with someone else, although who it was—or who they were—she still couldn’t ascertain.
