Chapter 997 - 997 983 Nangong Yan
Chapter 997: Chapter 983: Nangong Yan Chapter 997: Chapter 983: Nangong Yan Two girls, their expressions panicked as if they were eloping, hurried into the crowd. Someone must be chasing them from behind; each carried a long sword and a bundle.
The girl in the lead, likely the master of the other girl behind her, was around sixteen or seventeen. She had big eyes and a peachy face with the red of monkey buttocks—probably caused by her clothing. Wearing a pink plum blossom dress, her status was clearly high, surely from a wealthy family. Her steps were light, a clear sign of martial training—otherwise, she wouldn’t have such agility. She glanced back from time to time, very alert.
The girl chasing after her, probably a year or two older, was running out of breath. She clutched two bundles and a sword as if afraid of losing them. Though her green dress was just as luxurious as the first girl’s, it lacked the aura of a young miss. Perhaps such temperament is innate and cannot be changed by a day or two of refinement.
The girl following behind exclaimed, “I can’t run anymore, I really can’t.”
The girl in front, as if desperate to meet her lover, would not allow herself to be captured. If she missed this chance, she had no idea when the next ship would be docking—vessels were becoming increasingly sparse.
Suddenly, a dozen sword-wielding men appeared behind them, pouring into the crowd, searching as if they had lost some treasure.
The girl in the lead quickened her pace even more.
The path that was already narrow became more crowded with their frantic entry.
“What should we do, they’re catching up,” the girl following became suddenly anxious.
The lead girl exclaimed, “No, we need to find a place to hide first, otherwise, they will still find us.” There were five ways to go.
“Hide, but where?” The girl in the back had no idea.
The girl in front had already darted to the right. She figured that these men wouldn’t give up easily and would definitely search the ship. “The Cangqiong,” still needed time before setting sail. Getting on it now would lead to a ninety percent chance of being found. Fortunately, it was dark and there were many people around.
Nangong Yan said, “Qi Xue, let’s hide in the back.” She led the girl behind her into the alleys behind the houses, startling at some impolite men urinating there, nearly alerting those behind them.
The men chasing them soon caught up. One man ordered, “We must take the young mistress back. You there, search the ships!” Their uniform clothing and weapons made it clear they were from a martial sect, otherwise, they wouldn’t be so uniformly armed with swords.
An anxious aide feared that if they couldn’t find the young mistress, their master would scold them to death. Scolding was the least of worries; a mishap in these troubled seas would be truly terrible.
Unfortunately, the streets were too crowded, and in the darkness, searching was particularly difficult.
The long-faced man who seemed to be their leader asked, “What clothes was Miss Yan’er wearing?”
The aide replied, “Pink plum blossom dress.”
The long-faced man immediately said, “Got it, pink plum blossom dress.” They began searching for people wearing pink plum blossom dresses.
Ye Chen finished eating and glanced down the street, commenting, “This Immortal Medicine Island is indeed impressive.”
Li Mo agreed, “Hmm, I heard their Island Master is quite righteous and fair. Among the thirty-six island masters, aside from the most respected Ke Yizhu, Immortal Medicine Island’s master is also one of them.”
Ye Chen sighed, “If only time allowed, I’d really like to stay here for a couple more days.”
“I should go buy some stuff,” added Ye Chen. On this journey, it was unknown how long it would be before they could dock again, and the food on the ship was monotonously boring. Without some distraction, how could one bear it?
“Alright, off you go,” Ye Chen wanted to have a look around on his own.
Black Demonic Spirit complained, “It’s a pity there aren’t any eye-catching girls around.”
Having cleansed his malice, he had agreed to Ye Chen’s three articles of covenant and was now hiding on Ye Chen’s person.
“Don’t tell me you’re thinking about absorbing people’s energy again. If you dare, I’ll seal you under the seabed and prevent your soul from ever finding peace,” Ye Chen had to be harsher with his words or else Black might not be able to resist.
“Rest assured, I am a man of integrity. How could I absorb such people? If I were to do it, it’d be those with soft, tender skin—those are beneficial for beauty,” Black Demonic Spirit said coldly, having not felt normal for a long time.
“I think there should be plenty of beauties in the city. There’s no chance here at this fish-smelling dock,” Red Demonic Spirit said, unable to bear the tedium. The ship was predominantly men—no one would bother coming to a cargo ship unless they were really sick.
Qi Xue followed Nangong Yan through hidden passageways toward the Cangqiong, but by that time, those men were beside Cangqiong, some of their hands already searching the ship as time ticked away.
Qi Xue remarked, “I don’t think we’ll be able to board.”
To Nangong Yan who never gave up easily, having finally gotten out, she couldn’t possibly just abandon her plan.
“With them watching and searching for us, boarding is impossible unless we grow wings and fly up directly,” Qi Xue was already thinking of retreating.
Nangong Yan exclaimed, “Don’t think I’m giving up so easily, I will never give up.” That was just the kind of person she was, she had to reach Sacred Spirit Island for her friend’s sake.
“But we can’t blend in to get on board.”
That’s when Nangong Yan noticed some workers carrying goods on the other side, continuously delivering items to the Cangqiong. Crossing over obviously wouldn’t work, as they would certainly be noticed by Eldest Senior Brother; the only way was to sneak in.
Nangong Yan pulled Qi Xue toward the pile of goods and ran.
In a blink, they were among the goods.
“You’re not planning to squeeze into a crate like a piece of cargo, right? I wouldn’t agree to that, it stinks,” Qi Xue exclaimed.
Upon hearing this, Nangong Yan chuckled. She certainly wouldn’t allow herself to be treated like a pig or a sheep.
“I’m so hungry.” Qi Xue’s stomach was rumbling; she hadn’t eaten much that evening, and the running had depleted her energy even more, leaving her nearly starving.
“We’ll talk about it once we’re on the ship,” said Nangong Yan. She wasn’t about to risk being discovered by searching for food at that moment.
Suddenly, two workers came to move the cargo, steadily approaching. Nangong Yan glanced around and said, “Sorry about this, don’t blame me, it’s just your bad luck.”
A noise drew the two movers nearer.
“Thump, thump.” Two thuds, and the workers were down.
Nangong Yan hurriedly called out, “Come quickly and help me pull them in.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Take off their clothes; we’re going to switch into them.”
Qi Xue was stunned, replying, “Take off their clothes? But they’re men.”
“Do you expect me to undress them?” Nangong Yan kept scanning the area and urged, “Hurry up before someone else comes.”
Qi Xue had no choice but to close her eyes and follow suit.
It was impossible to simply board the ship; they had to blend in, using the cover of darkness and the sailors’ momentary inattention to sneak aboard without drawing too much attention. The sailors’ clothes were perfect for that.
Ye Chen had wandered around a group when the horn on the other side sounded, signaling the imminent departure of the ship.
Li Mo ran over, increasingly resembling a steward, and, sweating profusely, he said, “Sect Leader, I didn’t know what you wanted to eat, so I bought a little of everything.”
“Heh, don’t call me Sect Leader, call me Ye Chen.”
Li Mo then said, “Right, I forgot.” Although no one here recognized him, he still didn’t want to attract unnecessary trouble.
“If the girl were here, she’d definitely know what you like, so I wouldn’t be running around like a headless fly.”
This guy was really annoying. Just when he was about to forget, he’d get another hit on the head—a reminder, prompting him to exclaim, “She has no idea what I like to eat; I’m the one who remembers what she likes.”
“If Yun’er were here, she would talk and chat with you, and you wouldn’t feel so lonely and cold.”
“Can you not keep reminding me? It’s really annoying; it ruins my mood.”
Li Mo frowned slightly and dared not continue speaking.
Up ahead, a continuous stream of people was boarding the ship, clearly much more than during the previous two days and, unlike before, most of the newcomers carried swords. These people were unmistakably heading to Sacred Spirit Island, indicating that many were eager to obtain the Sacred Spirit Stone.
It turned out many were afraid of missing their chance to get to Sacred Spirit Island, as ships heading there had become increasingly scarce. For the cargo ship’s owner, carrying goods and passengers were essentially the same, provided the silver was enough. Naturally, the owner preferred as many passengers as possible.
“My goodness, aren’t they afraid of sinking the ship?” exclaimed Li Mo.
The assistant to the man with the horse-like face returned, his expression one of helplessness, clearly empty-handed, while people kept flocking in larger numbers.
The assistant asked, “Eldest Senior Brother, what should we do?”
“Have you searched every corner?” the horse-faced man inquired.
“I’ve searched everywhere, and I’ve also asked the people on the ship. Most of them just shake their heads,” the assistant added. “Knowing our status, they wouldn’t dare to deceive us.”
The horse-faced man could only think the same.
The assistant continued, “Maybe the young master hasn’t arrived yet.”
The horse-faced man shook his head.
“What do we do? Should we leave some people on the ship?” the assistant looked inquiringly.
“No need. Since she’s not on the ship, leaving people here won’t do any good. Just stay here and keep watch. Make sure no one slips by,” he ordered.
Nangong Yan was somewhat surprised; she couldn’t believe her senior brother was so persistent. Fortunately, the crowd was thick enough to blend in. She called out, “Qi Xue, are you dressed yet?” She tossed their wraps and swords into a crate and quickly covered it up.
Wearing clothes that reeked of salted fish, Qi Xue was uncomfortable. Pinching her nose, she wondered how long it had been since the clothes were washed. Disgusted, she exclaimed, “It stinks.”
