Chapter 848 - 848 834 The Eve of the Citys Fall
Chapter 848: Chapter 834: The Eve of the City’s Fall Chapter 848: Chapter 834: The Eve of the City’s Fall Immortal City was already showing signs of strain in several areas.
Su Zhanze was firmly convinced that they could hold out for one more day, continuously inspiring his subordinates.
Ren Haotian thought this guy was crazy, just trying to show off. He seemed to think he could regain face from the last battle at Dragon Slayer Island, recklessly brainwashing his troops without regards for their insufficient numbers. It shocked him to see those men foolishly believe Su Zhanze, leaving him speechless, not knowing what to say.
Ren Xiongbei, at this time, even though he couldn’t contribute much, had to acknowledge that they had held out for a day. It wouldn’t be right to say anything discouraging now, so after a while, he dispersed the gathering and let the men rest.
Following Ren Xiongbei, Ren Haotian said, “This guy, he loves to show off too much. He’s completely oblivious to our lack of manpower.”
A subordinate behind commented, “Maybe his brainwashing will encourage our men, allowing us to hold out for another day. If they can just hold on, Guo Mingyu and the others will surely make it here. Once they arrive, we’ll definitely be able to defend Immortal City.”
Ren Haotian replied with a cold smile, “Do you think Mitra Monk is an idiot? He knows we’re trying to stall until reinforcements from the Demon Domain can arrive. Why else would they wait for Hu Nanyue and the others to leave before striking? They must have anticipated this.” He was certain that tomorrow would be the decisive battle, adding, “Tomorrow, they’ll surely have a contingency plan. There’s no way they would come here just to make a scene without a killer move up their sleeve.”
The subordinate looked over and asked, “You think they have a killer move?”
“Nine times out of ten, they wouldn’t come here just to play around and then leave. They must have a killer move,” Ren Haotian stated.
That subordinate murmured, “If they really have a killer move, why didn’t they use it today?”
Ren Xiongbei looked at his son, sharing the same thought. If there truly was a killer move, they should have used it today; why wait?
Ren Haotian continued, “I don’t know, but I can say this: they definitely have something up their sleeve for tomorrow, so don’t celebrate too soon.”
The assistant said, “But today we really did hold them off, completely.”
“Maybe they did it on purpose, possibly preparing some kind of trick,” Ren Haotian suggested.
“I can’t imagine that, if they really had a killer move, they wouldn’t use it today,” the assistant pondered doubtfully.
Ren Haotian shook his head, “Anyway, whatever I say now is useless, but we have to be prepared for anything. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
He laughed coldly again, “And who knows if that Su Zhanze is just being naive, getting so excited without seeing the situation clearly. It’s as if the enemy is just playing with them.”
Ren Xiongbei responded, “Don’t talk nonsense; just get ready. If it turns out that we really can’t hold out tomorrow, then we’ll retreat.”
His son nodded promptly, “I have everything prepared.”
After having dinner, Wan Danrong returned to her room. The rain continued to fall outside as she leaned on the windowsill, watching the raindrops and reflecting deeply. It was as if she had come to a sudden realization about many things, like someone who had survived a brush with death. A cool breeze blew in through the window, bringing doubts about whether the rain would stop tomorrow.
Suddenly feeling tired after several days of turmoil, she no longer wished to sway in uncertainty and yearned to return to Wanshou City. Stretching out her hand, she could no longer remember when she had left Wanshou City or how Yi Mei was doing.
She should be well, she thought. After the fall of Sky Domain City, Wanshou City had returned to the hands of New City Sect, and Ye Chen had naturally entrusted the city to his uncle. A month had passed, and curiosity filled her; she really wanted to go back and see what Wanshou City had become.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. “Rong’er, are you there?” It was Guo Yuyun who called out. What was she doing here?
“Yes,” Wan Danrong replied as she stood up to open the door.
In her own room, Guo Yuyun had been pacing for a while, feeling it was necessary to have a good talk with Wan Danrong. After all, such a big misunderstanding had arisen, nearly causing much trouble.
“You’re in there!” In Guo Yuyun’s hand were roasted chestnuts, some Grilled Sesame Seed Cakes, peanuts, and a jar of wine.
Seeing her carrying an abundance of food and her hair obviously dampened by the rain, it seemed she had just returned from outside. Wan Danrong commented softly, “Such heavy rain, where could one possibly go?”
“Right, I was worried you weren’t in your room.”
“You went out in such heavy rain?”
“Brought some snacks back. Who knows where that monkey ran off to frolic around. I came to chat with you first, hope I’m not disturbing you,” Guo Yuyun said politely.
Rong’er took the food items from her hand and placed them on the table, then fetched a dry towel for her to wipe her rain-soaked hair.
“It really does feel like the weather has turned a bit cold.”
“Of course, it’s raining and windy, naturally, it feels cold,” Guo Yuyun remarked.
Wan Danrong closed the door and half of the window to block the draft.
“You brought wine too.”
“Mm, I figured drinking a little alcohol would make it easier to talk,” Yun’er said as she grabbed two teacups.
Looking at the scratches on her neck, Wan Danrong laughed and asked, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll go crazy and take your life?”
Guo Yuyun responded with a faint smile, “That was all my own doing,” and fetched a stool to sit on.
Wan Danrong actually felt a bit hungry, especially with the enticing aroma of the grilled sesame seed cakes stirring her appetite. She laughed and said, “They smell delicious.” It seemed that she had forgotten about the past days’ entanglements with Guo Yuyun, though they weren’t really entanglements. She just couldn’t comprehend how the two scratch marks on her neck had allowed her to let everything go so easily. What could be done now that things had reached this point? Did it really need to end in life or death? There was no need.
“Mm, these are meat-filled grilled sesame seed cakes. I don’t know if you’ll like them, but I tried some and thought they tasted quite good. Have a taste,” Guo Yuyun said as she sat down, poured two cups of wine, and seemed at a loss for words without it.
Wan Danrong opened one and found it still hot. She remarked, “Not bad, I like the flavor,” and took a bite.
“That’s good, I hope you like it,” said Guo Yuyun as she squinted with a cup of wine to warm herself from the chill, adding, “I also wonder if this rain will stop by tomorrow.”
Wan Danrong said, “It will stop.”
“How do you know?”
“This season’s rain doesn’t fall incessantly like during the plum rains. It typically pours down all at once and then stops,” Wan Danrong explained.
“Right, I hope, as you say, that it ends soon so it doesn’t delay our journey tomorrow,” Guo Yuyun said, her face warming a bit after two cups of wine, and her demeanor no longer as cold as before. She seemed much more comfortable, even relaxed, as she commented, “These chestnuts are nice.”
“Indeed, they’re well-flavored,” said Wan Danrong.
“I should have found a chance to talk to you sooner. If we had talked, what happened last night wouldn’t have occurred,” Guo Yuyun said with a sense of self-reproach.
Wan Danrong also remarked, “I didn’t handle things well either.”
“No, you had every right to be angry. After all, I was the one at fault first. I abandoned you without considering the consequences, not even knowing you were burdened with resentful spirits.”
“Those are things of the past; let’s let all of that go now.”
“Thank you for your forgiveness,” Guo Yuyun said.
“Pour me a cup of wine too,” Wan Danrong requested.
Guo Yuyun nodded and poured her a cup of wine.
Wan Danrong squinted with a gulp.
“Do you really like Ye Chen that much?” Guo Yuyun asked.
“Why, you’re going to let me have him?” Wan Danrong teased, well aware of how much Guo Yuyun liked Ye Chen.
Guo Yuyun gave a smile.
“You like him so much, how could you possibly let me have him!”
“We can have fair competition,” Guo Yuyun suggested.
“The monkey has already made his stance clear, how can we compete?” After reflecting on recent events, Wan Danrong felt she had come to understand everything better and continued, “Although I’m really not convinced, I admit that the monkey really needs your help. You are the only person who can help him more than anyone else, better suited for him than we are.”
Guo Yuyun smiled faintly; of course, she hoped to hear such words.
“I’m tired too. After going through all these things, I don’t want the hassle anymore.”
“You haven’t even traveled around the Central Plains yet,” Guo Yuyun noted.
“At this point, who knows what will happen next! With such danger, I’d prefer to return to the Wastelands.”
Upon hearing this, Guo Yuyun asked, “You want to go back to Wanshou City?”
“Yes, I’ve been away from Wanshou City for quite a while. I believe the reconstruction should be almost complete by now. I want to go back and see. I still enjoy the feeling of being a young lady, being served by others, it’s always better than serving,” Rong’er admitted.
“You’ve made your decision so quickly?”
“It’s not really quick; after all, I’ve been through quite a lot recently. I think it’s about time,” Wan Danrong said, sounding very resolute.
