Chapter 554 - 554 540 The Leaves
Chapter 554: Chapter 540: The Leaves Chapter 554: Chapter 540: The Leaves The silver he got from those two girls is all spent. He doesn’t have much wine left. What should he do?
Wandering around the streets in a drunken state, he heard some things about Wanshou City. Seems like the Wan family really did rule Wanshou City, everyone knew it.
More importantly, he heard that Wanshou City was preparing to join the Third Demon. He didn’t care much for this political turmoil, what he cared about was where he would get his next pouch of wine tonight.
He decided to try his luck as a beggar to earn some silver.
Problem was, he had no experience. He sat around dumbfounded all day without earning anything. Turns out begging was not as easy as he thought. Maybe it was his rigid face, he should probably smile a bit. That might increase his chances. But he had forgotten how to smile since Ling’er passed away.
Leaning against a pillar, he drifted off to sleep.
Barely enough saliva left to drool.
Wan Danrong and Yi Mei left the Wan Residence with a handful of followers and started looking for him in the streets.
They searched the whole day visiting all the places Yi Mei knew about, but he was nowhere to be found.
Wan Danrong was worried, “He couldn’t have left Wanshou City already.” She clearly didn’t want him to have left.
Yi Mei smiled, “It’s possible. Someone like him would see the whole world as his home. There’s no way he would stay in Wanshou City for long.”
“Damn, we should have set out earlier.” Wan Danrong sounded disappointed.
“Maybe he’s still here, just off somewhere mooching meals and drinks. I can’t bear to see you disappointed, Rong’er.”
“Don’t talk about him like that. He saved your life, after all. Without him, who knows where we’d be now, alive or dead.” Wan Danrong clearly sounded disappointed.
Noticing her concern, Yi Mei comforted, “Don’t worry. Maybe, he really is out there somewhere mooching for food and drinks. He’ll show up soon.”
Wan Danrong could only shake her head. “I hope so. Let’s head back.”
Just then, as they turned a corner, Yi Mei stopped in her tracks. She was peering ahead.
Following her gaze, an immediate smile spread across Wan Danrong’s face, “I told you he wouldn’t have left Wanshou City that easily.”
Yi Mei quickly followed Danrong. There he was, sound asleep, dreaming of fishing, nearly drooling.
“My goodness, he really is a beggar, falling asleep just anywhere.” The sight of him destroyed any appetite Yi Mei had.
“Could you not speak ill of him?”
Yi Mei yelled out to him, “Hey drunken man, catch any good fish?”
Ye Chen was still half-asleep, feeling someone nudging him, he bleary-eyed blinked into consciousness.
Yi Mei asked, “Still dreaming?”
Ye Chen was unsure who was talking. After taking a better look and wiping his drool, he finally recognized Yi Mei, “Oh, it’s you guys, what do you want?”
Wan Danrong jokingly asked, “Did you beg any money?” She sat down beside him, seemingly unbothered by his status.
“What’s it to you?”
“Do you plan on living your entire life as a beggar?”
Ye Chen continued to lean against the wall, still feeling groggy, he grumbled, “What other options do I have?”
“Come to Wan Residence, be my master, my bodyguard.” Wan Danrong suggested.
Ye Chen flatly replied, “No.”
Yi Mei was taken aback and exclaimed, “Do you realize how many people seize the opportunity to become our young lady’s master? Many want to be her bodyguard and yet you refuse!”
“I said no, that’s it.” Ye Chen closed his eyes again, hoping to continue his dream of fishing.
“You really are an ingrate.”
Just as she said that, his stomach gave a loud growl, everyone heard it.
Ye Chen rubbed his stomach, opening his eyes again.
“Would you like to join us for a meal?” Wan Danrong offered.
“But I’m not agreeing to your offer.”
“No, it’s just a meal.”
Unable to resist his hunger, Ye Chen nodded, standing up, “Let’s go then.” If someone’s treating, he won’t say no to free food.
“This guy, he really is just a hopeless drunk,” Yi Mei murmured, tagging along closely behind him.
They found an inn and reserved a table. Wan Danrong called over the waiter. Without saying anything, Ye Chen handed over his empty wine pouch and said, “Fill this up for me.”
The waiter regarded Ye Chen with disdain, as if he was afraid he wouldn’t have enough silver to foot the bill.
Quickly, Wan Danrong reassured, “Fill it up.”
Only then did the waiter take the wine pouch.
Wan Danrong asked, “What would you like to eat?”
Ye Chen cast a quick glance at the menu and said, “Let’s start with two roast chickens, a fish, a serving of pork belly, and a pot of Daughter’s Red.”
Wan Danrong had the waiter serve the food as instructed.
She also sent the followers who had trailed along with them, to wait outside. Suddenly, the room was left with only the three of them.
Yi Mei opened the window, asking, “When was the last time you bathed or changed clothes?”
“About a month ago.” Eagerly awaiting his food, Ye Chen picked up some peanuts from the table, cracking them open.
“Be my master,” Wan Danrong said, “It’s better than being a beggar on the streets. Plus, we have a large wine cellar.”
The offer is rather tempting.
“It’s better than you fishing here, not knowing where the next meal will come from, or where to sleep if it rains.” Wan Danrong said.
“Are you really the missy from the Wan family?” Ye Chen asked.
“Why would I deceive you?”
“Why did those people attempt to capture you that night?” Ye Chen asked out of curiosity.
“They were probably Yang Jing’s men. They were afraid we would join the Third Demon, so they wanted to kidnap me and force my father not to join the Third Demon,” said Wan Danrong.
“Did your father agree to join the Third Demon?”
Wan Danrong shook her head and said, “We don’t like Yuan Menhai, we were originally followers of Wei Sisan, but now that Wei Sisan is dead, we have no one to rely on. Our Wanshou City isn’t strong enough to confront the Third Demon or the No. One Heroes. In order to survive, we can only join one of them to save ourselves.”
Ye Chen kept eating.
“What’s your name?”
“Leaf.” Ye Chen answered casually.
“Is there such a name?” Yi Mei asked.
“Oh, there it is, my name is Leaf.”
Wan Danrong said, “Come on, be my master. You won’t starve, and you’ll be able to drink as much as you want.”
Ye Chen said, “Let me think about it.”
“What is there to consider about? There would be food and drink to satisfy you.”
At this moment, the roast chicken arrived. Ye Chen hadn’t eaten all day, and he was almost weakened by hunger. Without a word, he dug in.
Wan Danrong had to find a way to get him to the Wan Residence, or else he might run off at any moment.
Wine was served as well.
Ye Chen took a sniff, nodded his head. The wine was indeed good. He decided to have a bowl first.
Wan Danrong asked, “Are we friends now?”
“I’m just a drunkard, what does friendship matter!” Ye Chen said, draining his bowl of wine, seemingly more at ease. He proceeded to pour himself another.
“You are skilled in martial arts, you are not an ordinary person. Where did you learn them from?”
“I dare not say, just trying to get by.” Ye Chen tore off two chicken legs and started eating to stave off hunger.
“Do you have a martial arts sect you rely on?”
Ye Chen gave a cold smile, “If I had a martial arts sect that I could rely on, why would I be begging here?”
“Then come to our Wan Residence. I can assure you, although we are inferior to the Third Demon and the New City Sect, Wanshou City is one of the major cities in the Wastelands. I believe you must have heard in these few days that our home can surely afford you a dignified life.”
Upon hearing the words “New City Sect”, Ye Chen seemed to cool down, as if recalling something, he retorted, “Do you think I am not living a dignified life now?”
“No, I misspoke. I meant a more decent life.”
“Well, it doesn’t matter to me.” Ye Chen continued to eat.
“Have you encountered some problems? If so, tell us about it. If it’s something I can help with, I will certainly find a way.”
“No one can help with my problem.” Ye Chen’s tone became colder.
“Hey, let’s not mention it. Let’s eat. After that, come and see our Wan Residence. If you like it, you can stay. If you don’t, you can leave. But I guarantee that you’d definitely have it better than begging on the streets. Can you fill your stomach by begging for a few pieces of silver on the street? Even if you can, can you afford good wine? We have the best wine there.”
Ye Chen glanced at her, seemingly tempted.
“You can eat as much roast chicken and fish as you want,” said Wan Danrong.
“Sounds appealing.”
“Yes, this opportunity only comes once. I guess you often go hungry!”
Ye Chen continued to eat. In half an hour, a roast chicken had disappeared. He was less strained than before, no longer weak from hunger. She was right. He hadn’t had a satisfying meal in a long time.
After several bowls of strong wine, he was mostly drunk and started mumbling.
“With your martial arts skills, you could be a leader in any sect. You wouldn’t need to be like this. Did you have a heartbreak?”
“Heartbreak? More like a total break.”
“Total break? Did she get married to someone rich?”
“What’s getting married?”
“She didn’t die, did she?”
Ye Chen sighed.
It seemed she had guessed right. Wan Danrong said, “Hey, don’t think about these unhappy things, come, drink.”
Ye Chen raised his cup.
“No matter what happens in the future, you’ll be my friend, if not my master.”
They drunk bowl after bowl, losing count of how much they had consumed.
He had no idea what happened next.
When he woke up, he found himself in a large wooden barrel with the sound of giggling girls.
He was in the barrel, and a few girls were approaching him with flower petals. He was taken aback and nearly jumped out of the barrel naked.
