Chapter 540 - 540 526 The Long Dark Night

Chapter 540: Chapter 526: The Long Dark Night Chapter 540: Chapter 526: The Long Dark Night Longhun smirked, saying, “Really now? Are you saying you fancy me, always waiting for me like this?” He looked at Xiang Yi.

Xiang Yi pursed her lips, saying, “Quit playing coy, you know exactly what I mean.”

“I’m quite dim-witted,” Longhun retorted.

“No, you’re not. You just like to play the fool.”

Longhun chuckled.

Meng Xiuluo took the food brought by Xiang Yi and let her leave.

Unlike Meng Xiuluo, Longhun didn’t anxiously wait. He asked, “I heard you encountered Ye Chen?” He was intrigued by this brother he had yet to meet.

“Yes, I infiltrated the city for more information, and I had him in my sight but he became alert ahead of time before I could take action,” Meng Xiuluo replied.

“What kind of man is he?”

Meng Xiuluo pondered before replying, “He’s a fairly righteous individual, but somewhat sentimental.”

“Sentimental? Towards girls?”

“He’s quite loyal when it comes to girls,” Meng Xiuluo said, remembering the story about Ye Chen and Wei Yiling.

“You know about that too?”

Meng Xiuluo explained, “Initially, everyone thought Wei Yiling was dead. There was a girl who liked Ye Chen, named Guo Yuyun, their relationship was good and they were about to discuss marriage, I even captured her once, that’s when I got the Jade Ring that led to the Dragon Slayer Sword being lost. But then Wei Yiling appeared and Ye Chen left everything to pursue her.”

Longhun grinned, “So this is loyalty? I thought he vowed never to marry.”

“I don’t know. This is just what I’ve gathered, it may not align with how you see it,” Meng Xiuluo said, gazing at the stars. She wished things would continue this way, with him by her side, she would give up anything. But she knew Longhun was not one to settle down.

Longhun gave a nonchalant laugh.

“What about you? How are things going with Shi Xueqin?”

“You’re asking if we have consummated our marriage? Let me tell you, no,” Longhun answered.

Meng Xiuluo gave a faint smile; he was straightforward and never beat around the bush.

“What are your plans to deal with them?”

“You want to ask if I’m capable of killing my own brother?”

“Can you?”

“I don’t know!” Longhun shook his head, leaning against a rock, eating his roast, the wind whistling through the gaps in the stones.

He wasn’t someone who would divulge his thoughts.

Meng Xiuluo went quiet.

“Marry someone soon. You’re not getting any younger. What use is there in all this killing?” Longhun said. He knew he couldn’t give her what she wanted. More importantly, they were both cold-blooded, too familiar with each other’s past.

Meng Xiuluo stared at him, not replying.

“I’m being sincere. I’m doomed to a tragic fate in this life. Hell is inevitable for me. Don’t waste your life.”

“Mind your own business.”

“I don’t have any issues, just restless. I don’t know what might happen. Maybe I could end up as carrion in the wilderness, devoured by wild dogs.”

“You do it on purpose, don’t you? Every time you see me, you say these things.”

“No, I’m not doing it intentionally. I’m sincerely thinking for your benefit. Don’t waste your prime years on trivial matters.” Longhun continued eating.

“You’re not really into that girl, are you?”

“Do you think it’s possible?”

“Who knows, you won’t tell anyone else.” Meng Xiuluo said. She knew she and Shi Xueqin were different. Shi Xueqin was naive; she was complicated, which made her a better match for the suspicious Longhun.

“It’s not as complicated as you say.”

Meng Xiuluo asked, “What’s the current situation on Dragon Slayer Island?”

“What can it be? Those who want to marry and have children do just that. Those who don’t want to live just die. If they want to make trouble, let them have it,” he answered casually.

“Does my Uncle govern Dragon Slayer Island?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just abandoned it like that. Didn’t stand up for it, instead, you fled into the Wastelands.”

“What else could I do? As for such matters, if you Mo Ku can’t handle them, he might as well retire,” Longhun retorted.

“There’s no use in trying to reason with you. After all, we’re both stubborn,” Meng Xiuluo stated.

“If you truly feel this way, return to Dragon Slayer Island. As a woman, you’re already of age,” said Longhun, considering Meng Xiuluo as an older sister.

“I just don’t want to watch you grow up to be like your father.”

“Really?” Longhun questioned.

“I can’t persuade you anyway because I know it’s futile.”

“Then don’t,” Longhun said, “It seems you’ve changed. You would never have said this before.”

“Perhaps. I’ve seen too many people die—the Zen Master passed away, so did your father.”

“Everyone must die! I’m burning my own life, to make my death somewhat worthwhile,” Longhun said, continuing with his meal.

Footsteps approached from behind, it was Mitra Monk, interrupting the two.

Mitra Monk said, “All the leaders have been summoned, Young Master. It’s time to address them.”

“Alright, let them wait. I’ll be there once I’m finished eating,” Longhun replied.

Mitra Monk departed.

“Since you’ve met my brother, what are the differences between us?”

“Complete opposites.”

“In what way?”

“It’s hard to describe.”

“So he represents innate righteousness, while I represent innate evil? Who do you think will win then?”

“I don’t know.”

“Ahhh, you have that little faith in me?” Longhun asked with a hint of a smile.

“It’s not that I don’t believe in you. I just can’t judge. But he does have a weakness—he’s too kind. However, it is also his strength, as his kind nature attracts people to him and makes them trust him. I heard he captured Lang Ji, but he let her go.”

“If that’s what you’re implying, then I am not kind-hearted. I am a bad man.”

Meng Xiuluo chuckled upon hearing this.

Longhun stated, “Since he loves playing the role of the good guy so much, it’s only fair for me to play the villain. How else can we highlight his virtues?”

“What would you do if we take over Wasteland City?”

“Burn it, turn it into a sea of fire! Do I need to explain my actions? Otherwise, how could I manage to play the villain?” Longhun gave a chuckle.

Meng Xiuluo stared at him.

“Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts. I know that the last time dad burned down Wasteland City, you didn’t object.” Longhun said.

“Does my objection matter that much?”

“If you can’t bear it, return to Dragon Slayer Island. It’s the best place for you. After overcoming the Demon Domain, it would take them at least a few months to wage war on Dragon Slayer Island. But, I won’t give them any chance.” Longhun stood up, “That said, currently, the Dragon Slayer Island should be the safest place. It’s guaranteed to be safe for at least a few months.” He tossed a bone aside, licked his fingers, and walked off towards the darkness.

Meng Xiuluo continued to gaze at the young man, who was always so resolute and self-confident.

“Stop looking at me like that. I’m carnivorous by nature and find the flavor of meat much more appetizing.” Longhun turned back to add.

It was this super-confidence and unwavering resolution that conquered her.

“If you’re too tired, go back and rest. I’ll arrange someone to escort you back.”

“I didn’t mention going back.” Meng Xiuluo clearly knew that an even bloodier battle was about to begin.

Longhun headed towards Mitra Monk to summon his men.

Wasteland City.

The familiar streets looked different.

Surroundings were quiet. The ruins had been cleaned up, some houses were being rebuilt, but it would take some time to restore everything.

“It feels like a dream. I didn’t expect to come back here.” Ling’er commented.

Everything was still so quiet.

Right in front of them was the Liuye Manor.

“Yeah, I never thought I’d have the chance to come back here.” Ye Chen also expressed his feelings.

“I really didn’t anticipate we would end up together.”

“Happy?” Asked Ye Chen.

“My heart is at peace.”

“Mine isn’t calm, though. It’s stirring.”

“Are you wondering if you’ll regret this in the future?” Wei Yiling asked.

Ye Chen chuckled lightly upon hearing this.

“You’re still missing Guo Yuyun.”

“No, I’m really not.”

“If you say you miss her, I won’t think too much of it.”

“Don’t put words in my mouth. I know you girls too well. You say one thing but think differently.” Ye Chen replied.

Ling’er smiled faintly.

“I wouldn’t embarrass myself.” Ye Chen pushed the courtyard door open. Inside, weeds had overgrown, and traces of water damage were visible.

Ling’er said, “Impressive, how you managed to stay here for more than four years without making a single friend. How did you manage that?”

“I didn’t have a choice; it was all because of the Red Demonic Spirit. She wanted me to live as if I were dead. If I dared to make a female friend, she would chase them away just like she did with you. Do you think I would risk having friends?”

Ling’er pouted, as Ye Chen hung the lantern on a willow branch.

“Couldn’t you have same-sex friends?”

“I have no interest in same-sex relationships. It’s a waste of time.”

“Of course, you’re interested in the opposite sex, especially pretty women.”

Ye Chen laughed, “The most important thing is, those days were grueling. Living here was like being dead, akin to being locked in a dungeon. Whatever food I was given, it was passed through a dog hole by the door. Whenever I stepped out, I would only want to sleep, nothing else.”

“The Red Demonic Spirit was indeed cunning, using such methods to domesticate people.”

Ye Chen laughed faintly, “It was truly a prison.”

“But you should be grateful to her. Without her, you wouldn’t have been able to master your martial arts skills or gain such wisdom.”

“Indeed, I should be grateful to her.”

Looking at the tranquil lake in front of him, everything was drastically different from yesterday. Ye Chen said, “Don’t worry, Wasteland City will gradually recover. I’ll have it rebuilt. Sometimes, it would be nice to come here for a summer vacation, sail on the lake, do some fishing.”

“Perhaps, I’ll be the only one left fishing.”

“How could that be? I’ll later pass on the affairs of New City Sect to Jiang Zhuge.”

“You’ll transfer it to Jiang Zhuge?”

“Absolutely, do you think I really want to cling to that position? I’ve realized that being in that position isn’t fun at all. Everyone relies on you. Whether they’re well-fed or starving, you have to take care of them. It’s more fun to live a simple, carefree life without burdens, just like the good old days. When there’s time, I can go and travel around Central Plains.”

Ling’er said, “You’re planning to visit the Demon Palace, right?”

Ye Chen smiled, “I don’t have to go to the Demon Palace. There are many fun places.”

“Demon Palace and Immortal City hold more memories.”

“Not really, Wasteland City has more memories.”

Wei Yiling smiled softly.

“Just wait. Once I’ve finished this task, I’ll travel the world with you.”

“That’s easier said than done. I’ll keep dreaming.”

“Don’t talk like that. I genuinely mean it.”

“My dad used to say the same – he’d spend time with me in the future. But until his death, there was hardly a moment he spent with me.”

“That won’t happen. We’ll have a child, and the child will keep you company. You’ll never be lonely.” Ye Chen said.

Ling’er smiled coldly.

“I’ll accompany you after we conquer Sky Domain City.”

Looking at the moonlight that spilled onto the calm lake, frog croaks echoed in the distance.

The surroundings were eerily quiet. In the quiet of the night, the restless sound of a water hen could be heard.
