Chapter 517 - 517 503 Yuan Menhai Returns to the Wastelands

Chapter 517: Chapter 503: Yuan Menhai Returns to the Wastelands Chapter 517: Chapter 503: Yuan Menhai Returns to the Wastelands Jing Po found Mitra Monk and said, “Guan Yi and company are about to leave the Wastelands, New City Sect’s plan to attack Tianle City has fallen through.”

Mitra Monk heard this and said, “That’s only temporary.” At this point they could only aim to delay time.

“Gua Zhengnie should be grateful to us,” Jing Po said.

Mitra Monk nodded and gave a slight smile.

Jing Po continued, “True, without the Immortal Demon domain’s people, we just delay the New City Sect’s attack on Tianle City.”

By this time, Mitra Monk had already found out that the Immortal Demon Domain was planning to attack Dragon Slayer Island. It occurred to him that this commotion should be able to buy them some time. If indeed Longhun defeats the Immortal Demon Domain and gains control of Dragon Slayer Island before New City Sect takes over Sky Domain City, the situation will take a drastic turn.

“It’s a pity, just let Guan Yi and Liu Yunzhi go like that.” Jing Po uttered, “With our numbers, we could have caught them mid-way. An ambush, wiping out their forces without leaving a trace.”

“There’s nothing to feel pity for. We have to see the bigger picture, not just what lies ahead. What’s the use if we wiped out those three hundred men? Wouldn’t it reveal our presence? Our real opponents are not just them. Don’t be shortsighted,” Mitra Monk said.

“Your teachings are duly noted, I will follow your guidance.”

“Look ahead, don’t be like the dumb Gua Zhengnie, he lost his bearings because of only two hundred men, missed the opportunity to unify the Wastelands, it is no use regretting it now.”

“Exactly, I will heed your orders. I too want to rest for a while.”

“Feel free to rest, we’ll have plenty to do in the coming days.”

Hearing this, Jing Po left.

Xiao Bai had returned to Sky Domain City but he had completely lost faith in Gua Zhengnie. A lot of his disciples had been killed because of him. Although he was still alive, he had heard that the New City Sect had given up the attack on Sky Domain City. He had seen enough to know that Gua Zhengnie would never amount to anything.

He saw no prospects in staying and it didn’t make sense to give up his life for Gua Zhengnie. He had decided to leave.

One evening, when the night had fallen in, he drowned his sorrows in booze.

Zun Yu came to see him.

Seemingly to apologize for their previous awkwardness in the Wasteland City, it was Xiao Bai’s secret passageway that had saved their lives.

“Drinking?” Zun Yu asked.

“Haha, how come you have so much free time to visit me?” Xiao Bai was clearly not in the best of moods.

“I’m here to apologise for my rudeness last time.” Zun Yu too was a bit downcast.

Xiao Bai thought for a while and said, “It’s all in the past. Don’t worry about it.”

Zun Yu smiled, “You seem troubled, my friend.”

“What could possibly trouble me, other than the sorrow of losing so many brothers?”

Zun Yu thought of Kuang Shen and said, ” I too have lost a lot of disciples, it hurts.”

Xiao Bai poured him a drink, saying, “Let’s drink to their memory.”

“Don’t take it to heart.”

“It’s not sorrow, it just feels like a waste.”

Of course, Zun Yu knew that Xiao Bai had grievances against Gua Zhengnie. He too had been angry at some point, but that was in the past. He smiled and said, “Hey, failure is not the end, you just need to keep the faith.”

Xiao Bai gave a fake laugh, said, “I’ve lost all faith, I plan to leave.”

“What? You plan to leave? No way! Although we have been defeated, it’s just a temporary setback. It doesn’t mean it will always be this way. I still believe that things will get better.”

“Is that so!” Xiao Bai retorted sarcastically. “I don’t see things brightening up. While I agree that the New City Sect’s decision to attack Tianle City has been postponed due to the departure of the Immortal Demon domain’s people, I believe they will attack Tianle City eventually. Moreover, I believe the Alliance Leader will abandon Tianle City outright.”

He seemed to see right through Gua Zhengnie.

“That won’t happen. We won’t give up on Tianle City.”

“You don’t believe me?”

“No, it won’t happen.”

Xiao Bai took another pour of his drink and spoke coldly, “New City Sect is not our match. Let’s prepare for the worst. Don’t wait until there’s no retreat left for you. Shortsightedness is abhorrent.”

“It’s not that critical. I believe in the Alliance Leader. He will surely defend Sky Domain City.”

“I fear we wouldn’t be able to defend it even if we wanted to. Our disciples are losing heart, it’s really hard to defend. It’s exhausting.”

Zun Yu looked at Xiao Bai and said, “It seems, my friend, you’ve already made up your mind to leave.”

“Let’s see.”

“Although it might seem that the New City Sect is currently in a commanding position, defending Sky Domain City wouldn’t be too difficult. As long as we band together, the New City Sect wouldn’t dare cause any havoc. They wouldn’t resort to indiscriminate bombing without a care for the citizens.”

Xiao Bai nodded and said, “Yes, they can’t bomb indiscriminately, that’s not how the New City Sect operates.”

“Are you sure you want to go?” Zun Yu asked again.

“I’ve been thinking about it. I’m a bit exhausted, but I don’t anticipate leaving anytime soon. I don’t think the New City Sect will act immediately either. Even if they do decide to come, the people from the Immortal City and Demon Domain have just left, they will need time to regroup. At the very least, they would need to capture Tianle City before they focus on Sky Domain City,” I replied.

Zun Yu looked at me and said, “The Alliance Leader still places great importance on you.”

I merely chuckled coldly. I really didn’t want to mention that spineless coward who fancies himself as the Alliance Leader.

Zun Yu concluded, “It seems your mind is made up.”

“Well, it’s just a thought for now. Can you please keep this between us? I don’t want the Alliance Leader to find out too soon,” I responded.

“Don’t worry, I won’t spill the beans.” Zun Yu filled two cups, and sighed heavily. He was also struggling with mixed emotions. The recent mood among the members wasn’t great and it was affecting him too.

“You should consider finding an escape route as well. There’s a good chance we won’t be able to hold Sky Domain City.”

“Hmm, I’ll think it over.”

“Well, let’s have this drink first. Cheers to whatever lies ahead!” I proposed.

“You seem to hold some grudges against the Alliance Leader,” Zun Yu insinuated.

“How dare I!” I exclaimed.

“I understand your feelings. We finally had a chance to wipe them out and all of a sudden, we called it off, only to be ambushed. It was a childish performance, which led to a heavy defeat.”

I allowed a small smile to escape.

“In fact, I’ve been thinking about this too. Who’d have thought that youngster would have so many crafty tricks up his sleeve, so deceitful. All of them were traps, and now he’s probably dug another trap waiting for us to fall in,” I reflected.

“That’s not the main reason,” I corrected him.

“You’re talking about the Alliance Leader’s lack of ambition and resolve to unify the Wastelands?” Zun Yu guessed.

“Let’s not talk about that. Let’s drink. We’ve been colleagues for a while. Who knows when we’ll see each other again.”

“Alright, let’s drink!” Zun Yu agreed.

I raised my cup again, draining it in a single gulp.

“Alright, it seems your mind is set.” Zun Yu concluded.

“It’s hard to tell for sure. If the New City Sect doesn’t attack soon, I might delay my plan a bit,” I replied, “You should also make preparations. Don’t end up dying without a clue.”

Zun Yu looked at me, lost for words.

The wind whistled, ceaselessly beating against a solitary tree in the dark, causing the leaves to rustle loud.

Yuan Menhai and Ming Bei, along with the remaining three hundred members, had already returned to Wasteland City. Although the Zen Master had died, they had survived. Those who were left behind had decided to follow them. Now that the Immortal and Demon Domains had reasserted control over the Central Plains, they feared it was too dangerous to stay. After some wandering, they decided to return to the Wastelands but they urgently needed a sanctuary.

Upon entering, they heard about what happened in the Wastelands.

The third senior, Luo Hai grumbled, “Gua Zhengnie is a complete blockhead. I think Sky Domain City will eventually fall into the hands of the New City Sect. It’s a waste. If it were us, we would have eradicated the Immortal City Sect and unified the Wastelands by now.”

The second senior, Ming Bei added, “Apparently, Xiao Bai is quite resentful towards Gua Zhengnie. He complained that they almost had the New City Sect surrounded but had to abandon the plan because of Gua Zhengnie, causing them to miss a valuable opportunity. None of this would have happened otherwise.”

“Gua Zhengnie doesn’t have the ability to accomplish great things. If this continues, the New City Sect will eventually capture Sky Domain City. They don’t stand a chance,” declared Luo Hai.

Ming Bei then revealed, “I heard that Xiao Bai intends to leave Third Demon.”

“That’s smart. Staying with Gua Zhengnie is suicide, since he doesn’t even know how he’ll die. Rumor has it when Xiao Bai was trapped, Gua Zhengnie didn’t even attempt a rescue and escaped. Had it not been for the secret passage Xiao Bai left in Wasteland City, how could they have possibly escaped?”

Yuan Menhai listened attentively, then asked, “Is Xiao Bai really planning to leave?”

Ming Bei explained, “This was reported by one of his subordinates, a man named Chen Jiu.”

“I’ve heard he’s quite greedy?”

“More than just greedy. Allegedly, during the ambush on Wei Sisan, Gua Zhengnie managed to bribe him with money. In the end, he suppressed Wei Sisan’s plea for help resulting in serious injuries.”

Yuan Menhai seemed interested and quickly suggested, “Give him the silver. Get me into Sky Domain City. I want to have a talk with Xiao Bai.” He felt this could be an opportunity. If Xiao Bai was disheartened by Gua Zhengnie, why shouldn’t he seize this opportunity?

Ming Bei seemed puzzled, unsure of what Yuan Menhai meant. He asked, “Is Sect Leader planning to recruit Xiao Bai?”

“Since he dislikes Gua Zhengnie to this extent and is disheartened by him, this is an opportunity. Why shouldn’t we seize it? Who knows, he might even turn out to be a great help.”

Understanding dawned on Ming Bei, as he nodded and said, “I get it. I will come up with a plan as soon as possible.”

Yuan Menhai stated, “We have very few people. We can’t make it on our own. If we want to grow quickly in a short amount of time, we need help, especially now.”

Ming Bei nodded in response.

“I need to have a serious talk with Xiao Bai.” Yuan Menhai was sure. He was a talent, especially in leading a team. The incident at Wasteland City confirmed this. If he could be utilized for their own purposes, a comeback was inevitable.

Luo Hai noted, “I’ve noticed that there are many people within the Third Demon who disagree with Gua Zhengnie. Who would give up their lives for such a selfish man? It’s completely unjustified.”

Seeing a glimmer of hope, Ming Bei agreed it was a valuable opportunity. If they could seize it, Sky Domain Sect could make a comeback in the Wastelands. It was a turning point, depending on whether Xiao Bai would join forces with him.
