Chapter 387 - 387 374 The Death of Sect Leader Su Hong
Chapter 387: Chapter 374: The Death of Sect Leader Su Hong Chapter 387: Chapter 374: The Death of Sect Leader Su Hong Before daybreak on the second day, Ye Chen and his companions had partaken in a simple breakfast and set out on their journey. They had already known what had transpired in Immortal City—the Mitra Monk leading his people on a deadly march towards it. The city was in imminent danger, and they wished nothing more than to reach it as soon as they could.
But by noon, they had come in contact with the Zen Master’s people. The Zen Master had come seeking battle, effectively stalling their progress. Ye Chen instantly understood their aim and said, “Their goal is to stop us from reaching Immortal City. We must find a way to elude them.”
Despite realizing the intentions of the Zen Master and his followers, breaking away from their exertion wasn’t easy. They were many in number, and despite previous battles that had reduced their troop by around three hundred, the remaining seven hundred were still a force to be reckoned with.
The Zen Master had heard about the Mitra Monk’s attack on Immortal City. He believed that it would not be too long before the city was theirs. As for Ye Chen and his group, the Zen Master and his people had caught them in the crossfires. Had Ye Chen arrived four hours earlier than he did, perhaps he could have escaped the Zen Master and his followers. But fate was likened to the lines of a prewritten script that played out unexpectedly and ensnared him in a timely manner.
As a result, Ye Chen became very anxious, as did Guo Yuyun. But they didn’t gain anything from being anxious, so they could only think of a solution.
The people of the Zen Master approached with an aggressive momentum, eager for battle.
They stuck like a plaster, making it impossible for Ye Chen and his crew to break away.
They battled for six grueling hours to no avail. They were held captive there, unable to escape. The Mutant Winged Dragon was of no help either. It seemed as though it was prepared for this, making their escape more desperate and frustrating.
Several plans were devised, but none of them worked. So they decided to inform Su Hong and the others about the incident. Ye Chen told them that they were being held up in the middle of their journey by the Dragon Clan.
Unbeknownst to them, dusk was already upon them. Can Mo said, “The more anxious we become, the more useless we are. It makes us more impatient. It seems that they have received the message from the Mitra Monk and are openly obstructing us. They don’t want us to reach Immortal City.”
However, Li Mo countered, “Maybe it’s not important whether they stop us or not. We might still not be able to arrive before the city is breached.”
But Ye Chen disagreed, “No, whether we can make it or not, we must find a way to break away from them. We need to put forth our best effort, we can’t afford to be disheartened.”
Concluding, Can Mo said, “The sun is setting. We can only use the cover of darkness to devise another plan to elude them.”
All Ye Chen could do was nod in agreement.
In the rear, Jiang Zhuge and Kong Sha, who were fighting fiercely, came back and reported, “These guys came prepared.”
“Of course, they are prepared!” Li Mo agreed.
“So what do we do now?” Kong Sha asked.
Ye Chen replied, “Rest. Plan. Once night falls, we’ll try to elude them again.” They had been fighting for half a day without effect, rather injured many disciples, and tired a lot of people.
Indeed, as soon as they stopped taking action, the Zen Master’s men, seemingly tired, stopped their advance abruptly.
Fortunately, Su Hong had managed to get Jiang Ouyang to evacuate the women, children, and elderly from Immortal City. The remaining people were primarily on the city ramparts, utterly unconcerned about the fires raging within the city. Their main objective was to kill the enemy.
With the elderly and frail ones out of the way, they had one less thing to worry about.
Su Hong declared, “Don’t worry. If we are destined to die here, I will die with you. We will live and die together.”
When his subordinates saw that a heavily injured Su Hong had stayed behind, they had nothing else to say. If Su Hong didn’t abandon them, what excuse did they have to not fight?
Everyone vehemently opted for a fight to the death with the Dragon Clan.
However, the self-destruct system was inside the Hell Tower. It seemed that the Dragon Clan knew about this, so they did not intend to get close to the Hell Tower.
If it was activated, Immortal City would be completely destroyed.
All the demons inside the Hell Tower would also die. But the following representatives decided that there was no need to set off the self-destruct device casually.
Su Hong and Yin Feng didn’t mind how many buildings were ruined inside the city. Facing the surging Army of Death, they would kill as many as they could. Every single enemy they killed was a victory.
All the Immortal Beasts in the city that could be set free were released.
In front of the city wall, battles raged, while behind, a fierce fire was burning.
At this moment, Yin Feng came running over, bearing a message from Ye Chen, forwarded by a carrier pigeon. Su Hong guessed they might not make it on time. He stayed silent for a bit before stating, “We won’t tell the rest of them.”
He feared that the news would strike their pupils directly. It was better not to say anything. As long as they knew that someone was coming to their aid, they would fight to the end.
“We cannot let them belittle us,” Su Hong added, “Hold on.”
Tears rolled down Yin Feng’s cheeks, he suggested, “Sect Leader, maybe you should leave.”
“No, I can’t leave. If I do, these people will lose hope. I must fight with them to the end.”
Knowing Su Hong was prepared to die, Yin Feng said, “Alright. Today, supported by my master, I won’t let the Dragon Slaying Clan look down on us. Our Immortal City has no surrendering disciples.”
Su Hong gave a faint smile upon hearing this.
“Indeed, we must not let them look down on us. We should let them know what kind of people we are in Immortal City,” Su Hong declared.
Yin Feng shouted, “Start a fire, burn those spineless cowards under our city, let them understand our might.”
In the end, however, there were too few inside Immortal City to defend it, especially as the battle progressed. They were facing the most formidable people of the Dragon Slaying Clan.
The cover of darkness allowed Ye Chen and his team to escape the Zen Master. Yet shortly after, they received news of Su Hong’s death. Su Hong and those who stayed behind had all died within Immortal City. From down at the mountain’s base, Ye Chen, in spite of the dark, observed several black fumes that could be seen clearly even far away.
That was the last message Su Hong sent through homing pigeon before his death. It was a message urging Ye Chen and his team not to ascend the mountain.
Ye Chen was left speechless. He knew Immortal City had been set ablaze.
Su Hong was worried that Ye Chen and his team would get ambushed by the Dragon Slaying Clan if they ascended, hence he wrote to dissuade them.
Can Mo remarked, “This is Su Hong’s personal letter. He may have died already. We can’t save them. We shouldn’t go up the mountain.”
Jiang Zhuge also said, “Exactly, Ye Chen. Listen to Sect Leader Su. Do not ascend. This letter must have been written several hours ago. By now, he might have died. If we go up and Mitra Monk is waiting there for us, we might be ambushed by the Zen Master’s followers. It might put us all in danger, so let’s not act recklessly. Let’s prioritize the bigger picture.”
Yu Yun queried, “What about the elderly and weak in the city?”
“I believe Su Hong must have made arrangements, using the cover of darkness to evacuate the elderly and weak from Immortal City,” Jiang Zhuge said.
The inky black night was devoid of the sound of slaughter, suggesting the battle on the mountain had concluded. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have stopped so abruptly. They had also heard that the fight had gone on until midnight the previous night.
Ye Chen ordered, “Can Mo, take a few people and quietly go up to check if the city has fallen.”
“Certainly, leave this task to us.”
Of course, Ye Chen’s party didn’t enter Crane City. He would not risk bringing danger there. So they didn’t enter Crane City, opting instead to stay in a nearby open woodland. Ye Chen ordered Jiang Zhuge to keep an eye on their surroundings.
Li Mo suggested, “Maybe Su Hong escaped before the city fell.”
“No, Su Hong must’ve been decisive about his fate.”
Li Mo queried, “Isn’t there a self-destruction system in Immortal City?”
Kong Sha replied, “There is indeed one, but it’s located within Hell Tower. It’s designed to kill every demon within upon activation. The people of Immortal City don’t want this to happen, hence they wouldn’t use it lightly.”
“But if the city falls, Mitra Monk and his followers could release the demons inside the Hell Tower to wreak havoc on the Central Plains, right?” Li Mo enquired.
Yu Yun explained, “No, the Hell Tower has been modified. To release the demons within, at least three secret keys are needed to unlock the sealed door of Hell Tower. Otherwise, the tower will explode, unleashing powerful energy that destroys everything.”
“So, there is no other solution apart from the secret keys?”
“The Hell Tower is protected by the forces of heaven and earth. Unless your power can counter those forces. But I don’t think the Dragon Clan possesses such powerful forces. A slight misstep could trigger the self-destruction mechanism, and they would all perish,” Yu Yun stated.
Jiang Zhuge suggested, “Once Ren Xiongbei arrives, we should devise strategies to regain control.”
Li Mo pointed out, “Even if we retake control, it won’t be of much use. It is bound to be in ruins.” They had seen Wasteland City turned into a ruined area.
Kong Sha agreed, “Indeed, you won’t see a single intact place.”
“That’s the cost, the bloody cost. Why do some people never understand this? Only after paying the price, do they understand what it means.”
Ye Chen remained silent, watching the fire and waiting for news from the mountain to determine whether they need to ascend.
Yu Yun fell silent, gazing at the thoughtful Ye Chen and slowly growing sorrowful, “I wonder if Sect Leader Su is still alive.”
Ye Chen said nothing, and the food prepared by his team was brought over.
Ye Chen pondered, about what’s to be done next, given the current state of Immortal City, what could their future hold?
