Chapter 1077: Chapter 1063: The Grace of Saving Life Chapter 1077: Chapter 1063: The Grace of Saving Life Ye Chen glanced back at Shao Hengjiang and said, “I think you can recognize Shao Hengjiang as your godfather.”
“Why should I? Am I someone without a father?” Despite not voicing it out, her heart was filled with gratitude. After all, it was a matter of life and death.
“Hey, that’s not what I meant,” he chuckled. “I’m saying having an extra godfather isn’t a bad thing at all.”
Shao Hengjiang called out, “This is the spot. Rest up quickly, eat something, then we continue to the island.”
People began to stop in their tracks.
Shao Hengjiang quickly dispatched a dozen people to scout ahead, to see if they could track down Qiandu Xiang’s people. He also needed to be clear about the road ahead.
Ye Chen found a tree to rest under. He was truly exhausted, able to fall asleep standing up. He called out, “Don’t disturb me. I need a good sleep to handle whatever monster might show up next. I suggest you catch some rest too. You’ll need the energy to run faster next time.”
Nangong Yan sat on a stump not far from him, watching Shao Hengjiang busy with arrangements, her mind wandering. She couldn’t understand the old man anymore. Perhaps he wasn’t that bad; at least he had helped her in her moment of danger.
The noises of some monster were intermittently audible.
Qiandu Xiang and his people headed into the forest.
Qiandu Ao glanced at Ban Hong and asked, “Still no sign of the Phoenix Monster?” He was puzzled. If the Phoenix Monster had destroyed their ships, it definitely should have followed them, but there was no sign of it.
Ban Hong shook his head.
“Could they have killed it?” Qiandu Ao couldn’t believe it, his tone incredulous. Did Shao Hengjiang have that kind of ability? Impossible. He asked, “Could that group of people have really defeated the Phoenix Monster?”
Ban Hong was just as perplexed. After such a tempest, getting past it safely, let alone fighting the Phoenix Monster, was incredibly challenging.
“Damn!” It seemed that must be the case. Qiandu Ao declared, “Next time, they won’t have it so easy.”
For Qiandu Xiang, the loss of a Phoenix Monster was regrettable, but he didn’t care about a mere monster. If he obtained the Sacred Spirit Stone, he would have everything. His main fear was that the people ahead might elude them. He had to keep up; he couldn’t let Ouyang Yue and her companions get their hands on the Sacred Spirit Stone. He called out, “Just a worm. Hurry and keep up.”
Gu Feng said, “Shouldn’t we seize the Sacred Spirit Stone from them?”
Upon hearing this, Qiandu Xiang replied, “You think I don’t want that? But we have to wait for Hai Jingtian to arrive.” He was right; to snatch the Sacred Spirit Stone from a group twice their size was nearly impossible.
“They should have arrived. I left markers for them. Once they land on the island, they can quickly catch up,” Gu Feng responded.
Qiandu Ao couldn’t stop brooding about it.
Qiandu Xiang nodded slightly and said, “Make sure they don’t escape us.”
Gu Feng hurriedly responded, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep a close eye on them. They won’t get away.”
Not sure how long he had slept, but his stomach was grumbling loudly, Ye Chen awoke to the smell of roasted meat. Nangong Yan, who had woken up at some point, was eating next to him.
Ye Chen rubbed his eyes and asked, “What time is it?”
“Almost noon. You’d better get up and eat something. We’re setting off soon,” Nangong Yan replied with her mouth greasy from food,
which made Ye Chen unconsciously think of someone—of course, it was Guo Yuyun.
Nangong Yan had been watching Shao Hengjiang for quite a while now. The old guy really had a knack for things, ensuring everything was well arranged, even taking care of the injured.
She was considering whether to incite a fight between Shao Hengjiang and Qiandu Xiang, but then reconsidered. It seemed too excessive, considering he had saved her life. How could she commit such an act? Yet, she worried that this might all be an act. If all of these were pretense, then Shao Hengjiang was a masterful actor.
Perhaps he truly was a good person. She contemplated talking with Shao Hengjiang to see if he genuinely wished to acknowledge her as his goddaughter; it would help Ouyang Yue, her Junior Sister. If so, that would be perfect. She had been mulling it over for quite some time.
Now, Shao Hengjiang and Qiandu Xiang were thoroughly at odds. The feud had ignited.
Still, she wondered if Shao Hengjiang was intentionally helping Ouyang Yue and the others. She knew that over the years, the relationship between Sacred Spirit Sect and Iron Ten Thousand Island hadn’t been great, but that was during Ke Yizhu’s era, and things were different now. She was eager to mediate but wasn’t sure about Shao Hengjiang’s thoughts. She had to test the waters.
Ye Chen, watching the lost-in-thought Nangong Yan, asked with a smile, “Silly girl, what are you staring at? Are you concocting some wicked scheme to make people fight again?”
Nangong Yan looked over and asked, “Do you think Shao Hengjiang is just putting on an act?”
“What do you mean?”
“In my memory, he should be ruthless, forcing others to submit to him.”
Ye Chen looked ahead, noticing Shao Hengjiang and a group of people chatting and laughing together while eating and commented, “Has he changed his ways?”
Nangong Yan resumed nibbling on her roasted chicken leg.
“That’s why I say, when judging people, you can’t just go by what others say. Like how I view Qiandu Xiang, what I hear from others may not be the truth,” Ye Chen stated and grabbed a roasted chicken leg to gnaw on himself.
“Did he tell you what he wants the Sacred Spirit Stone for?”
Ye Chen fell silent for a moment, then said, “He only told me he doesn’t want to be a pirate anymore. He wishes to live honorably, and if he has the Sacred Spirit Stone in his possession, he could truly live honorably.”
“Is that what he told you?” Nangong Yan asked curiously.
“Yes, that’s what he told me.”
“And do you believe him?”
“I do believe him somewhat,” Ye Chen said.
Nangong Yan nodded her head but said nothing, her mind evidently pondering something.
“You’ve changed your view, haven’t you? Try to accept others for a change, and things might really be different. Don’t always think about serving poison wine to someone.” Ye Chen knew this girl must have changed a lot, otherwise, he wouldn’t be so surprised.
Nangong Yan really wanted to have a good talk with the other party. If she could really pull her into their group to help her father and the others fight against Qiandu Xiang, it would be hugely beneficial. They would definitely be more assured, especially now that Qiandu Xiang was still following her father and the others.
“You’re not really thinking about making others drink your poisoned wine, are you?”
“If that were the case, I’d have to poison you first,” she retorted.
“You’re being so kind to me.”
Shao Hengjiang called out, “Alright, everyone has caught up enough with the news. We need to set off now, or we might not be able to keep up.” After much effort, they had finally found the whereabouts of the people ahead. They all had a chance to rest, but the day had passed quickly.
Ye Chen stretched lazily and stood up, looking at the gloomy forest, feeling a bit scared, he said, “I bet there are a lot of monsters waiting for us in the woods.”
Nangong Yan said coldly, “I think a female monkey is waiting for you in the woods,” hearing the monkey calls.
Still shaken up from their narrow escape, Ye Chen said, “If it weren’t necessary, I wouldn’t come to this damned deserted island.”
After the battle, Shao Hengjiang had lost about two hundred men, but they were lucky not to lose a ship, and they still had around four hundred men.
Ye Chen looked at Nangong Yan and knew that her view of Shao Hengjiang had changed a lot.
They walked into the dense forest that could only be described as blocking out the sun. The sunlight trickled down, and the moisture under the trees couldn’t evaporate, causing many leaves to rot and attracting various poisonous insects.
A foul, sour smell hung in the air, very unpleasant.
“Be careful, there are poisonous snakes,” Wan Liyun warned from the front.
Nangong Yan touched her chin, which lacked a beard.
Ye Chen asked curiously, “Brewing some sinister scheme, are we? I beg you, don’t mess with Qiandu Xiang. This is a wild forest. If you lure out other monsters, I won’t be joining you in dealing with them.”
“It sounds as if I lured the Phoenix Monster here,” Nangong Yan glanced at Ye Chen.
“If it wasn’t you who lured it, was it me?” Ye Chen continued, “If you hadn’t released the Water Dragon last time, Qiandu Xiang wouldn’t have noticed us. But Qiandu Xiang is indeed cruel, waiting for a storm before kicking us when we’re down.”
“How else would it be called ‘adding insult to injury’?”
Indeed, a large group of monkeys appeared ahead, wildly screeching.
Ye Chen continued to eat his food.
Suddenly, Nangong Yan turned and walked towards Shao Hengjiang, who seemed surprised by her approach.
Without preamble, Nangong Yan asked, “I heard you want to recognize me as your goddaughter?”
Shao Hengjiang was taken aback. He had never entertained such a thought, but a glance at Ye Chen in the distance made him understand—it must have been that monkey’s idea. He had promised to try his best to help mend their father-daughter relationship. Suddenly, he thought that if he could recognize her as his goddaughter, it would be killing two birds with one stone. With a quick thought, he said, “Yes.”
“Why do you want to recognize me as your goddaughter?”
“Because you are the daughter of my Junior Sister, and I have a very good relationship with your mother.”
“That’s the only reason?”
“Not only. I once made a mistake, and I want to make amends.”
“What mistake?” Nangong Yan became curious.
Obviously, Shao Hengjiang couldn’t tell her the truth, so he said, “I hurt your mother deeply, very deeply.”
“Is that all?” she hesitated to probe further. From some paintings, she knew that this old man had deep feelings for her mother. Would it be too embarrassing to ask for more clarity?
“Yes, that’s all.”
“How did you end up as a pirate?” Nangong Yan was obviously very curious about this topic.
“When I was young, I was impulsive. One mistake led to another, and I became a pirate,” said Shao Hengjiang.
“Do you really not want to be a pirate anymore, and want to be a good person now?”
