Chapter 1055 - 1055 1041 Mind Full of Fog
Chapter 1055: Chapter 1041: Mind Full of Fog Chapter 1055: Chapter 1041: Mind Full of Fog “Do you really have to marry him?” Shao Hengjiang asked intently, setting down the teacup in his hand.
Nangong Yan was determined to hold her ground. It seemed like the man was getting angry, but she was resolute in not bearing his child. She said, “Yes, don’t expect me to become your wife. Even if you can possess my body, you will never have my heart. Give up, my heart will always belong to him.”
“Good, you’ve got spirit,” Shao Hengjiang stood up.
Nangong Yan didn’t know what he meant, and feared he might pounce on her. She was no match for him.
“Stay here,” Shao Hengjiang said.
“What do you mean?” Nangong Yan felt that this was not how the story should go. The man was supposed to be in a rage, but he didn’t lay a finger on her, nor did he seem angry. Instead, he acted as though nothing had happened, leaving her utterly confused.
“Don’t even think about escaping. We’re on a boat, unless you wish to drown,” he said, then turned and walked away.
Ye Chen had waited a long time inside, and when the girl didn’t return, he murmured, “She couldn’t have really…” He didn’t dare to continue the thought. Although he wanted to survive, pushing her out like this felt somewhat unscrupulous.
After all, dealing with an old man would be a life sentence. He waited until midnight and she still hadn’t returned, growing more and more worried. With her stubbornness, she might have taken her own life by biting her tongue. But he couldn’t blame himself; she had brought it all on herself, including his capture, so he felt no remorse.
It’s over, definitely over. She hadn’t come back all night. Apart from that, what else could have happened? Ye Chen shouted loudly, but nobody responded to him.
He didn’t know what to do. Like a clay bodhisattva crossing a river—he could barely save himself, let alone her. She needed to learn this lesson, otherwise she wouldn’t change. But then he thought, if something really had happened to her, given her temperament, she surely would be driven mad. He couldn’t help but worry, yelling, “Hey, all that was just a joke earlier, don’t do anything rash! That girl might bite her own tongue off.”
“Do you want to sleep or what, making all that racket over there? Want me to give you a couple of lashes to teach you a lesson?” the doorkeeper hollered.
Ye Chen hastily retreated, no longer daring to shout. He was actually quite afraid of the man wielding the whip.
Gone for the whole night. The girl didn’t return for the entire night. Ye Chen worried all night, contemplating how to comfort her and persuade her against seeking death if she had been violated.
Dawn began to break.
A burly gatekeeper with a face full of flesh bellowed, “Boy, get up, now!”
The whip cracked loudly, making one tremble involuntarily. It was meant for beating oxen—not something a person could withstand.
Ye Chen looked around, hoping the girl had come back, and asked, “Where’s the girl?”
The burly man didn’t answer but threw a bright red garment at him, shouting, “Put this on quickly if you don’t want to be whipped, or else you’ll regret it.”
Ye Chen didn’t understand the man’s intentions, but now under their control, he had to do as they said. He took the clothing—why a bright red outfit? He was utterly confused but still put it on.
Ye Chen was even more puzzled as he looked at Li Mo and said, “What do they mean by this? Dressing me up like a bridegroom. A condemned criminal wouldn’t be dressed up so lavishly for execution. What a waste of silver taels—it’s obvious this clothing isn’t cheap.”
Li Mo was also completely befuddled.
Ye Chen questioned the burly man, “What are you trying to do, has your boss taken a fancy to me and decided to give me his daughter in marriage?”
The burly man just gave him a cold look and remained silent.
Ye Chen adjusted his attire again, jokingly saying, “I hope your boss’s daughter isn’t some frightful ogre. I won’t accept an ogre.”
“Come out now.” Two men went inside to lead Ye Chen out of the iron cage.
Li Mo also wanted to follow, but was pushed back by the burly man.
Ye Chen was then escorted out.
Nangong Yan had no clue what that damned Shao Hengjiang was up to. That morning, people came for her, and several young ladies dressed her up in bright red bridal makeup.
“It’s over,” Nangong Yan shook her head. That damned old man really had his eyes on her, dressing her up as a bride as if to have his way with her that night.
Nangong Yan spat, “You old bastard, if you dare come near me tonight, I’ll turn you into a eunuch.” She was ready to commit suicide by biting her own tongue, but the pain was unbearable when she tried. The thought of her tongue being cut off and bleeding scared her.
Then she heard a thin girl say, “I advise you not to bite your tongue. People who sever their tongues don’t necessarily die, but I guarantee you’ll become mute and never speak again.”
She was right. Now that her hands and feet were bound, biting her tongue off wouldn’t guarantee death, and she didn’t want to become mute forever, unable to speak ever again—that would be even worse.
She was on the verge of tears, not knowing what to do. The thought of a future with the man she despised, the man she wanted to poison, filled her with dread, and her tears flowed freely.
Another plump maid said, “Today is a good day, a great joy for getting married—crying isn’t good.”
At that moment, Nangong Yan couldn’t stop crying. How did that damned old fool take a fancy to her? She just happened to resemble the mother in the painting. How could this be happening? It was all over for her.
The tears could no longer be held back, and they came pouring out.
The two maids completely ignored her, and Nangong Yan couldn’t move at all.
They even mocked her, holding up a mirror and asking if she looked pretty.
She was in no mood for that. With a golden hairpin on her head and all sorts of jewels, her tears flowed like a spring.
The two maids wiped away her tears once again.
A red bridal veil was placed over her head, and everything went dark; she couldn’t see anything in front of her.
All she could do was curse fiercely, “Come on, I dare you. Tonight, I’ll make your life worse than death.”
Ye Chen didn’t know what those guys were up to. Suddenly, red lanterns appeared in front of him, and two maids kept bringing food into a room. His stomach had been growling for a while as he had digested all of last night’s food.
Was he really going to be the groom? Completely baffled, Ye Chen heard one of the maids cursing, “Shao Hengjiang, you old coot, come if you dare, I shall curse you to be childless and grandson-less.”
That voice sounded so familiar, as if it was coming from inside the room. Ye Chen was pushed into the room, and the maid was still cursing.
Ye Chen was utterly confused; wasn’t that Nangong Yan’s voice?
Dressed as a bride and covered with a red veil, she sat motionless on the edge of the bed, right there. He couldn’t see her face clearly, but he could tell from her voice that it was indeed Nangong Yan.
Ye Chen became even more puzzled. What exactly was the damned Shao Hengjiang up to? He couldn’t understand it at all; it made no sense to him.
He was pushed into the room, and the door clicked shut behind him.
Ye Chen listened intently, sure it was Nangong Yan. He walked over, lifted the veil, and jumped in surprise—it was indeed her, as if seeing a ghost.
With her bridal veil lifted, Nangong Yan looked at Ye Chen, equally stunned. Shouldn’t it have been Shao Hengjiang? Why was this monkey dressed as the groom? She was even more perplexed and asked, “Why is it you?”
“Of course, it’s me.” Ye Chen freed her from the acupoint block, and Nangong Yan stopped cursing Shao Hengjiang; her acupoints had been released.
“Are you the groom? What on earth is going on?” Nangong Yan was completely unprepared.
“I’d like to ask you the same thing. You didn’t come back, and what did you tell Shao Hengjiang? Why did he capture me to be the groom?” He smelled the scent of meat and, feeling extremely hungry, went straight to eat, filling his own stomach first.
Removing the heavy piece from her head, Nangong Yan was shocked and confused all over again. “Is the groom not Shao Hengjiang?”
“What did you all talk about last night?”
“I didn’t say anything. I just said that I’d rather die than marry him.”
“Then why did he grab me to be your groom?”
“I was about to ask you the same question.” After a night of trouble and a morning of crying, Nangong Yan’s nose was stuffed up, and she was extremely hungry. Seeing Ye Chen wolfing down food, she also ran over to eat.
Ye Chen, biting into his meat, said, “It seems Shao Hengjiang was afraid we would be too lonely. Before dying, he wanted to give us each other’s company, as a married couple no less.”
Nangong Yan didn’t believe such nonsense, but as to what game the damned Shao Hengjiang was playing, she really had no clue; it was all beyond her comprehension as she grabbed a chicken leg and started gnawing on it.
“He shouldn’t be so good to us. Shao Hengjiang must have been kicked by a donkey, or else he wouldn’t have done this. If it were me, I’d have thrown you into the sea ages ago.”
“I’d toss you into the sea first.”
Ye Chen shook his head and said, “This old man has really been quite good to us. To have this wedding chamber, we can say we’ve lived without regrets. Worth it. We have to seize the opportunity; if missed, we would regret it for the rest of our lives.”
Nangong Yan glared at him; she knew all too well that his mind was filled with mischief.
“Don’t look at me like that. Am I wrong?” Ye Chen continued, “I guess, if you died like this, you’d feel it was a pity too. So let’s hurry up and finish eating, enjoy ourselves in time. After consummating the marriage, it wouldn’t matter if we died. Aside from not having an heir, we would have lived a complete life.”
