Chapter 1020 - 1020 1006 Quieting Things Down
Chapter 1020: Chapter 1006: Quieting Things Down Chapter 1020: Chapter 1006: Quieting Things Down Ye Chen ran as if he’d lost his soul, nearly out of breath as he did.
Black Demonic Spirit said, “That’s it, they will definitely search. We’ll surely get caught, and in the end, they’ll expose us.”
“Don’t worry, at most only I will be exposed. You two hiding on Ye Chen’s body, they won’t find you, and I won’t point Ye Chen out.” She knew that Shao Hengjiang had already seen her face clearly. If there was a thorough search of the ship, even if she were disguised as a man, they would still find her.
“You’re quite the heroine, easier said than done. Once they take off your clothes, you’ll spill everything.” Black Demonic Spirit knew this all too well.
Red Demonic Spirit said, “Why don’t we just stay here? Then they won’t be able to catch us, right?”
Black Demonic Spirit scoffed and said, “If you don’t return to the dormitory, and they check there, missing two people, they’ll immediately conclude that we’re responsible. It’s like leaving silver out in plain sight.”
Red Demonic Spirit felt that Black Demonic Spirit’s analysis was spot on and said, “But if they search, won’t they find us anyway?”
Nangong Yan gathered her loose hair back together, once again disguising herself as a boy.
Ye Chen stood up and said, “Nangong Yan, you stay here. I’ll go back first to see what’s happening.”
Nangong Yan looked over.
Ye Chen shouted, “Don’t go out and cause more trouble again, please, for the love of Guanyin Bodhisattva.”
Nangong Yan pouted her lips slightly.
Ye Chen called out, “You two rascals, keep an eye on her and stop causing me trouble,” before turning to leave.
Black Demonic Spirit scared her by saying, “Just wait until they catch you and use you as a tool for bearing children.”
Red Demonic Spirit lit the oil lamp.
Nangong Yan had never seen such a beautiful portrait of her mother, not even at her father’s place. She was extremely puzzled about who could have created it, and how it ended up in Shao Hengjiang’s room.
“It can’t be that my mother actually had some connection with that murderer, can it? No, that’s impossible. My mother was not that kind of person. Although she died when I was very young, I know that her relationship with my father was always very good.”
So why did Shao Hengjiang have a portrait of her mother? She couldn’t think of a reason, especially since it was kept in his own room. He really was a despicable fellow, capable of such things.
Nangong Yan looked at the portrait again, observing its meticulous details, even more detailed than she had noticed before, capturing someone’s inner shyness. It must have taken a lot of heart to paint so well. Her mother must have been very young at that time. She had never seen a painting of her mother from when she was that young.
“You still have the mood to appreciate a painting? Just wait until you get ravaged,” Black Demonic Spirit was far from polite.
“Can you just shut up and let me have some peace?”
Ye Chen returned to the dormitory to find, to his surprise, that it seemed as if nothing had happened. There was no search, nothing. Ye Chen went around in circles, almost thinking he’d seen a ghost. It was a significant event; how could there be no search? He knew that Nangong Yan had almost poisoned Shao Hengjiang to death, and the absence of a search was simply beyond belief.
He approached a fellow, pretending to be clueless and asked a couple of questions. The guy said the Qian Manor Master had caught two petty thieves.
“Petty thieves, really? I heard it was an attempt to poison the Qian Manor Master,” Ye Chen said.
The young fellow replied, “No, it was two little thieves who came to steal paintings.”
“So what happened, did they catch them?” Even if it was petty thieves, there should’ve been a search. It couldn’t just seem as if nothing had happened.
The young fellow said, “Yeah, they caught them, and they’re already locked up.”
Ye Chen was stunned, unable to recover for a moment before asking, “What, caught them? Both of them?”
“Of course, if they hadn’t been caught, they would have to search.”
“Did you see it yourself?”
“Right, they were caught and are already locked up. Those two thieves were bold, daring to steal from the Qian Manor Master’s room. It would be odd if they hadn’t been caught.”
Ye Chen forced a laugh, completely clueless about what Shao Hengjiang was up to. He was standing there in perfectly good health, and they say the thieves have been caught? This wasn’t a dream, was it? He couldn’t understand. How could Shao Hengjiang so easily let go of someone who attempted to poison him? Known for his ruthlessness, how could they call him Iron Chains if he didn’t react? It made no sense to Ye Chen, and he couldn’t figure out what was going on.
He’d been worried just a moment ago, but now suddenly they weren’t going to catch them? What was that about? He couldn’t understand.
Ye Chen went around once more, and it was like nothing had ever happened, akin to waking up from a dream. Was this some psychological tactic? But was it right to play such games? To let go of someone who tried to harm yourself and to catch two dummies instead to keep the peace? Even he couldn’t stand it.
Ye Chen returned to the chicken and duck cabin, looking like he’d lost his soul.
Red Demonic Spirit looked over and said, “Hey, monkey, what’s up, what’s the verdict? Have you figured it out? If it’s really as we feared, they’ll definitely come to search this place. We better think about jumping ship fast.”
Ye Chen replied, “They say they’ve caught someone, and it’s two petty thieves.”
Black Demonic Spirit, upon hearing this, blustered: “That’s utter nonsense! We’re right here, how could they have possibly caught us, and the girl has already shown her face to Shao Hengjiang. His vision may not be the best, but he can still tell if they’ve got the wrong person.”
Red Demonic Spirit added, “Yeah, and he’s the one who figured out she was about to poison his tea.”
Ye Chen was confused as well, “Exactly, that’s what I thought too, but what I heard was indeed that they’d caught some petty thieves, and now they’re not searching anymore.”
“No way, I heard that Shao Hengjiang is ruthless and kills without blinking—how could he let someone who tried to poison him in his own room get away? Impossible.” Red Demonic Spirit shook his head and blustered, “This must be a conspiracy, or else Shao Hengjiang is an idiot.”
Black Demonic Spirit said, “Right, definitely a conspiracy.”
“Conspiracy my ass, what’s there left to conspire? The majority on this boat are his people; a thorough search would definitely turn up the crazy girl.” Ye Chen was stunned.
“Then why don’t they do just that?” Red Demonic Spirit was also puzzled.
“How would I know? Maybe he really took a liking to the crazy girl, wants to repay evil with kindness, and move her with his virtue.”
Nangong Yan couldn’t understand it either and blustered, “What nonsense are you spouting?”
“If you think I’m talking nonsense, then tell me, what is the reason? In any case, I can’t make sense of it. Tell me, why would they catch two fakes? He’s afraid of us, how is that possible? That old guy’s martial arts are extremely high; I’m no match for him. If I hadn’t climbed away quickly, I would have certainly lost to him.”
Red Demonic Spirit looked over and said, “What, you’re not his match either?”
“His martial arts are unfathomable. He saw through my martial arts routine in an instant. Even though I’m younger than him, I had no advantage at all. He is the true grandmaster.”
“Grandmaster my ass, calling him a grandmaster.”
“Maybe he already knows who we are,” Red Demonic Spirit suggested.
“If he knows who we are, why doesn’t he catch us? Has your brain gotten waterlogged?” Black Demonic Spirit blustered, still worried about getting captured again to practice martial arts.
“Anyway, I don’t know if this guy is trying some psychological tactics or conspiring something else, but I really can’t figure out what he’s up to. However, it seems like he doesn’t want to catch us.”
“That’s illogical; it must be an illusion.”
“Maybe they think we’ve jumped overboard and escaped, so searching would be pointless.”
Nangong Yan was dumbfounded too. Just now, Shao Hengjiang was definitely out for blood; one palm strike almost ended her life. Had it not been for Black Demonic Spirit and Red Demonic Spirit halving the energy, she would have been dead on the spot.
But afterwards, she noticed the murderous intent from Shao Hengjiang vanished, suddenly disappeared as if from the moment he saw her face, spreading out, and later he even inquired about this jade pendant; she didn’t know what he meant, but he mentioned her mother’s name, at least indicating that this man must know her mother.
“Who is the person in this portrait?” Ye Chen asked curiously.
“My mother,” Nangong Yan replied.
“Is this the painting you stole from Shao Hengjiang’s room?” Ye Chen asked curiously.
“Yes.”
“How come your mother’s painting is in Shao Hengjiang’s room? Could it be that your mother had an affair with Shao Hengjiang?”
“It’s your mother who had an affair with someone else,” Nangong Yan retorted angrily.
“Then why is your mother’s painting in Shao Hengjiang’s room?” Ye Chen squatted down, looking at the beautiful painting that was indeed brimming with emotion. It would indeed take a lot of affection to paint something so expressive; it was of a sixteen or seventeen-year-old girl.
“How should I know, maybe he is someone with a cleanliness obsession,” Nangong Yan was also clueless.
“This must be a portrait of your mother when she was young,” Ye Chen observed thoughtfully. “Although you really do resemble her, your mother was much more beautiful than you. If your mother were here and I had a choice, I’d definitely choose your mother.”
What a nonsense-spouting guy, Nangong Yan thought. “My mother has passed away; you can go to hell to find her if you like.”
“In that case, I’m better off being alive,” Ye Chen breathed a sigh of relief. Even though he was still confused, at least the danger had passed.
This guy was almost drooling; what a bad egg, ogling over a portrait. Nangong Yan put the painting away.
“Maybe that old fart fancied your mother, and seeing how much you resemble her, he got carried away. The old fart has fallen for you.”
