Chapter 1675: Chapter 1673: A New Situation
As the Group sent someone to announce the appointment, the whole company suddenly became quiet.
The looks people in the branch office gave Peter Brown were filled with layer upon layer of complication. No one had expected that a migrant worker could climb the ranks so quickly within such a short period of time.
Thinking about how they had toiled for so many years without similar development, everyone could only sigh.
However, reflecting on the various things Peter had done, everyone inwardly acknowledged his capability; indeed, nobody possessed his ability or the kind of luck he had.
Matthew Clarkson was probably the most frustrated of all. Initially, when he saw Henry Carter in trouble, he had harbored thoughts of possibly taking over Carter’s position. Yet, what had never crossed his mind was that the project under Peter’s responsibility would actually succeed.
Seeing how Peter leveraged the project’s success to rise through the ranks, Matthew sighed to himself. Now all he could think about was Peter’s luck and failed to notice the work Peter had done behind the scenes.
The new leadership team held a brief meeting. After all, it involved only three people plus the Chief Engineer and General Manager who had joined the leading members. The meeting was not long; Peter, in a few words, assigned everyone their responsibilities. Now as the deputy head of a new project and having received recognition from the Group, it was natural that his word became law here; nobody dared to cross Peter.
After discussing the key points, Peter turned to the group and said, "Everyone knows the direction our development will take next. If there are no changes, we will surely shift towards the Reservoir Project. None of us are familiar with this project, which poses a challenge for us. However, if we look at it from another angle, if we manage to secure several high-value real estate projects during this critical period, there will naturally be possibilities for everyone to lead a project. Therefore, for the company’s sake as well as our own, our next focus should still be on developing in this direction."
Peter spoke very frankly, and everyone nodded in agreement after hearing his words. Indeed, if they managed to accomplish this, securing a project would mean securing a position for themselves.
Matthew nodded slightly and said, "I agree with Manager Walter’s view. We must focus our work in this direction. Even though we have experienced setbacks with our previous project, now that there are several hundred million-dollar-level projects up for grabs, I believe we should work in that direction."
"Then good, everyone should divide the work based on their areas of expertise. As long as we secure a project, our branch office will have a better future," said Peter.
In the time that followed, everyone divided the work for projects that seemed promising.
Peter was assigned to a city project worth several hundred million; it was considered a major project. Nonetheless, nobody held out too much hope since competition for it was fierce.
After the meeting concluded, everyone dispersed, with unresolved feelings about Peter’s appointment as manager.
Peter was aware of everyone’s feelings but said nothing.
Once in his office, he turned on his computer and began to review information.
Having been assigned a new project, Peter wanted to understand more about it.
"Manager Walter, here are the documents you requested."
While he was reading, Peter heard a voice. He looked up, and his eyes brightened as he saw Ivy Cooper, dressed in a short skirt, holding some materials and walking in.
It had been days since Peter had seen Ivy. Ever since her arrival, she seemed to have learned a lesson and had stayed hidden in the records room, not stirring up any more trouble.
Today, as he glanced her way, Peter couldn’t help but admire her. After several days of recovery, she seemed to have come back to herself.
"Are your injuries okay now?" he asked.
Hearing Peter’s words of concern, a complex emotion stirred in Ivy’s heart.
As she looked towards Peter, Ivy felt almost as if she were dreaming. She could never have imagined his rapid rise. Remembering the time when Peter first arrived and was just an ordinary worker in the office, Ivy felt overwhelmed with emotion. She had invested so much effort, even going as far as to sell her own body, and yet, now she was in this state. Meanwhile, Peter, whom nobody had thought highly of, was amassing more and more power.
"I’m fine now," she replied.
"Well, if there’s any difficulty, just speak up," said Peter.
Moved once again by Peter’s words, Ivy quickly placed the requested materials on Peter’s desk and left the room.
She knew her own situation well; everything she had done had been seen by Peter. Thus, she hadn’t expected anything more to develop between them.
After all that had happened, Ivy realized it all came down to fate. She didn’t have the destiny for more, and struggling was futile. She only hoped that Peter would look out for her as much as possible since they had shared an office once.
Watching Ivy leave, Peter sighed at the sight of her excellent figure and thought to himself that this woman could have had a promising future if she hadn’t been so hasty, ultimately destroying herself in the process.
However, he caught himself thinking that without his arrival, she indeed might have risen. In a way, he felt he had reversed her fate.
With this thought, Peter gently tapped on the desk.
By outstripping her luck, he owed her; not repaying it would certainly bring no benefit to his future development. As a cultivator, he valued karma the most—sowing causes must reap effects, and it seemed he had to make restitution.
As someone on the path to the Holy Path, he couldn’t leave such debts unpaid.
Yet, when he reconsidered, he paused. He was a farmer who had ascended to his current position, perhaps ascending further still. This rise itself was like seizing fortune. If he really had to repay, where would repayment end?
All at once, Peter found himself at a loss.
Suddenly, an idea occurred to him: to accumulate virtues through good deeds!
Yes, taking someone else’s path of destiny was surely a moral debt, but that didn’t mean there were no ways to repay it. What if he could perform acts of kindness while advancing his career?
Thinking of the scenes from the Phantom Realm, Peter no longer believed it was something crafted by mere mortals. He was more convinced it was a product of Heavenly Dao. If that was the case, then performing virtuous deeds was indeed possible.
With this new mindset, Peter felt more at ease. He would pay back what he could and, for what he couldn’t, he’d return it by doing good deeds.
