Chapter 1579: Chapter 1578 Setting Up a Scheme_1
"Peter, what are you doing?" Reid Nelson asked curiously as she entered the office and saw a stack of old books on Peter Brown’s desk.
"Sister Reid, what’s up?" Ivy Cooper also seemed a bit more like her usual self today, dressed in a white pair of jeans that flattered her figure. She heard Reid’s inquiry as soon as she walked in.
"Take a look at Peter, he’s brought back a bunch of old books."
The two of them started to look over the books.
Peter said, "These were brought in by an old lady who said they turned up when their family was going through their old house. I thought they looked like ancient books, so I bought them."
"Where did you get the money to buy these books?"
"Didn’t Edward Ford agree to lend me some money to learn driving last time? I quietly took 500 yuan and bought these books."
"Edward Ford agreed to the money for your driving lessons, and look at you, you actually used that money to buy this junk."
"You can’t call them junk. You haven’t studied how to appraise antiques. I’ve been studying it quite diligently recently; I believe these are treasures and should be worth a lot of money."
Ivy flipped through the books a few times and then tossed them onto the desk, saying, "I think these are just old junk, and you’re treating them like treasures. Peter, you also want to score a bargain on Taobao, but this isn’t the way to do it."
"Anyway, I’m convinced they’re valuable, and after work, I’ll take them to the market to test and see if they are indeed worth something."
At that moment, Reid Nelson’s desk phone started to ring. After answering the call, she looked stunned for a moment before saying, "A leadership meeting for leading members?"
She then started to notify others.
Ivy also expressed confusion, "Why is there suddenly a leadership meeting today?"
"It’s about discussing the appointment of officers."
When Peter heard this, he sat there pretending to be clueless, but in his heart, he understood that today’s meeting might concern his own appointment, and probably many of the mid-level officers would be adjusted.
"Peter, are you busy?" Just then, a captain walked in, glanced at Peter Brown, and greeted him.
When Peter looked up, he recognized one of Henry Ford’s trusted followers from yesterday and promptly stood up, saying, "Captain Cook, are you here for business?"
"Yes, I have some matters to handle and came over early."
Peter actively invited Captain Cook to sit down.
Peter had a feeling that Captain Cook was here to probe the situation of today’s meeting.
"What are these books?" Captain Cook saw the stack of old books on Peter’s desk and asked out of curiosity.
"I’ve been studying antiques recently. These books I chance bought from an elderly person, and I feel they’re valuable. I’m planning to have them appraised," replied Peter.
Captain Cook picked them up and flipped through for a while, then shook his head, saying, "I always hear about people finding bargains, but I’ve never come into such wealth. I can’t make sense of these old books either. However, the printing and the font do look rather good."
Meanwhile, several people from yesterday’s gathering at the villa arrived, and everyone crammed into the Integrated Office, laughing and discussing Peter’s old books.
Of course, no one believed that the old books Peter bought on a whim could be worth much money.
It was about time; everyone knew about Peter’s interest in antique research. The next step was all about converting that into money.
Clearly, people’s attitudes toward Peter had undergone a significant change. They no longer treated him as an ordinary worker but rather as if he were a leader.
Ivy sat there, observing everyone’s attitudes with a look of puzzlement in her eyes.
Even Reid Nelson noticed something off and observed Peter for a while.
After the notifications for the meeting were completed, Reid laughed and said, "What’s with everyone today, all gathered together like this?"
Captain Cook laughed and said, "Yeah, what day is it even?"
Everyone started to laugh.
Soon, all the leaders had arrived, and it was rare to see Christian Greenhill and Vincent Clinton both entering the office.
At nine o’clock, the leaders gathered in the small conference room.
A captain named Damian quipped, "Director Wang, you’ll have to treat us this time!"
Peter Brown knew these people were here to probe the situation, guessing that word about his possible promotion had gotten out. He smiled and said, "Once I’ve sold these ancient books and made my fortune, I’ll treat everyone well."
Everyone laughed again.
At this point, Ivy Cooper started to understand and stared at Peter Brown with wide eyes. She couldn’t figure it out—she had put in so much effort, even to the point of sleeping with someone for the sake of her career, yet she hadn’t been promoted, whereas this unassuming man, who hadn’t achieved anything notable, was about to be promoted.
Was there any justice in the world?
Ivy Cooper felt that everyone was laughing at her.
Without saying anything to anyone, Ivy Cooper walked out.
Seeing that Ivy Cooper had left the office and Reid Nelson had gone to a meeting, Captain Cook said with a smile, "Director Wang, we’ll have to rely on you for the office work going forward. Men can always get more done than women."
Once he set this new title in motion, several others started addressing Peter Brown in the same way.
"Leaders, I’m just a small fry, please don’t call me that," Peter Brown quickly waved his hands in protest.
"Stop pretending, we discussed this yesterday already, it’s a done deal."
As everyone was joking around, Peter Brown’s cell phone, which he had set up himself, began to ring.
Peter Brown picked up his cell phone and stood up, continuing to speak as he walked to the window. Standing there on the phone, his conversation couldn’t be overheard by anyone.
In fact, this was a fake call that Peter Brown had orchestrated—the cell phone ring was something he had set up in advance.
"Hello, what did you say... Right... it’s still in my hands and hasn’t been sold yet."
"You want to buy my books...and have them appraised..."
"What... how much did you say..."
At this point, Peter Brown’s expression changed slightly, and he looked somewhat dazed.
"Okay, let’s set a time, noon works for me. I’ll be in the market place, and then we can agree on a meeting spot."
After hanging up, Peter Brown quickly went over and carefully collected the scattered old books one by one, counted them, and then stored them in the cabinet below.
Seeing Peter Brown on the phone and then so careful with his books made everyone curious and watch him closely.
"Director Wang, what’s the matter?" Captain Cook inquired.
After hesitating, Peter Brown said, "After I bought these books, I asked someone to appraise them. At the time he didn’t mention anything about authenticity, but now he’s called saying that his master has come to appraise them, and these books might actually be genuine."
A captain asked curiously, "If they’re real, how much does one book sell for?"
"They roughly mentioned that the auction price in the market is around 300,000 yuan per book. I expect mine to be lower, but it should still be about two hundred thousand or so."
"What did you say?" Everyone suddenly couldn’t stay calm.
"You’ve got six of them here!" someone who had counted earlier exclaimed.
