Chapter 37: Spear and Sword: In Perfect Harmony

Chapter 37: Spear and Sword: In Perfect Harmony

Zane lounged comfortably on his bed, one leg crossed over the other, his laptop resting on his lap. Though the device itself appeared normal, a bright holographic screen projected above it—alive with movement and glowing outlines. The forest terrain stretched across the display, flickering occasionally as drone feeds adjusted focus.

With a lazy grin, Zane reached into a bucket of popcorn beside him, tossing a handful into his mouth. A cold can of soft drink fizzed quietly in his hand as he took a long sip, eyes never leaving the screen.

The image shifted.

From the smoky underbrush of the forest, a towering man emerged—broad-shouldered and clad in dark leather armor lined with blood-red streaks. His mask was smiling but scarred. In one hand, he casually spun a heavy, double-headed axe, each rotation humming with weight and power.

Zane’s eyes lit up. "Oho? Here comes the boss." He shoved more popcorn into his mouth, voice muffled as he leaned forward with interest. "Now it’s getting fun... Let’s go, Ron. Lia. Don’t disappoint me!"

Back in the forest—

Ron’s stance tightened, the tip of his spear resting slightly forward as his flamish aura flickered at his heels. "This one’s no joke."

High above, Lia crouched on a thick branch, the moonlight catching the curve of her blade. Her silver gaze was fixed on the man below. "Strong aura. Heavy weapon. Don’t get caught in a swing."

The team leader stopped spinning the axe. His gaze flicked between them with disinterest. "You two are tougher than the rest... Good. Makes this worth my time."

Then he charged—his boots cracking twigs and earth, axe swinging low with terrifying force.

Ron spun his spear once and planted his foot firmly into the forest floor. Flamish aura crackled around him like wildfire, licking up his arms and the shaft of his weapon.

Lia landed gracefully beside him, crouched low with her blade drawn in reverse grip. A soft wind coiled around her ankles as her silver aura pulsed—sharp, focused, deadly.

They both faced the team leader.

Ron exhaled sharply. "He’s stronger than both of us."

Lia nodded without breaking eye contact. "Then we fight smart. I’ll keep him busy. You find the opening."

Ron gritted his teeth, raising his spear. "Together."

They launched forward—two streaks of flame and wind blurring toward the enemy. The team leader didn’t flinch. His eyes tracked them calmly. As they closed in, he moved.

Fast.

Much faster than his size suggested.

With a grunt, the team leader spun his massive axe in a wide arc. The sheer force of it ripped through the air, splitting the ground where they’d stood.

CRACK!

Chunks of earth erupted. A small shockwave blasted out, forcing Ron and Lia to backflip away, arms crossed to shield themselves. Leaves and dirt rained down around them as they landed, sliding backward, boots digging into the soil to stop their momentum.

"Okay... he’s not just brawn," Lia muttered.

"No kidding," Ron growled, breathing hard.

From high above, Zane leaned even closer to the hologram. His popcorn bucket now nearly empty, and his drink half-gone. His eyes were wide with delight.

"Oh hell yeah! This is what I’m talking about. Let’s gooo!"

Back in the forest, Lia shifted her stance—and her blade glowed faintly green.

"Wind Butterfly—Second Technique: Butterfly Slash," she whispered.

In a heartbeat, she vanished from sight—then appeared midair, slashing down as a razor-thin arc of wind shot toward the team leader.

The wind blade tore through trees on its way. The team leader, sensing danger, instinctively twisted his body—barely dodging it. The blast grazed his shoulder, slicing through his armor with a hiss.

"Tch..."

Just as he turned to counter, Ron surged in from behind. His spear burned with radiant heat.

"Inferno Spear—First Technique: Flaming Stab!"

The golden-hot tip of the spear lunged forward, aimed straight for the team leader’s heart.

The axe-wielder snarled and pivoted—dodging by mere inches. But the spear still scraped across his ribs, drawing blood.

"Damn it," Ron hissed. "Too shallow."

Lia’s eyes widened. "Ron! DODGE!!"

The team leader, enraged, swung his axe in a brutal sideways arc. Ron instinctively raised his spear to block, but the force was overwhelming.

BOOM!

He was sent flying like a ragdoll—crashing into a tree with a sickening thud. The trunk splintered behind him.

"R-Ron!!" Lia shouted.

But the team leader wasn’t done. He turned and released a sweeping vertical slash—a shockwave of force trailing from the blade. Lia crossed her blades to guard, but it still hurled her backward.

CRASH! She slammed into another tree, bark exploding on impact.

Leaves fell. Dust settled.

And Zane?

Zane sat upright, eyes wide and shining. His drink dripped from his chin as he whispered—

"...Holy shit.That was so good."

Back in the forest—

Ron and Lia barely managed to rise from the rubble, their breaths ragged, blood staining their clothes and faces. Lia had a deep cut across her forehead, and blood dripped from the corner of her mouth. Ron was worse—his right side bled heavily where the axe had torn through, and every breath he took made him wince in agony. Still, he pushed himself to his knees, gripping his spear for balance.

What should we do? he thought, sweat and blood mixing on his brow. We can’t beat him... But I have to at least make sure Lia gets out of here.

Lia staggered beside him, her blade trembling in her hand. Her legs were weak, her vision blurred.

We’re too injured... and he’s too strong. I need to draw his attention... give Ron a chance to escape.

Ron raised his voice, panting. "H-Hey! Big, ugly bastard... your opponent is me!"

"No," Lia snapped, her voice hoarse but determined. "You’ll be fighting me. Ron, you go. Escape."

Ron’s grip on his spear tightened. "No, Lia! You get out of here!"

But the team leader stepped forward slowly, dragging his massive axe behind him with a low scrape against the ground.

"No one is going anywhere," he growled, voice cold as steel. "Except with me... to your death."

Ron and Lia tried to stand again—shaking, groaning—but their bodies gave out. They collapsed back to their knees, gasping, shoulders slumped.

And somewhere far above, the screen flickered. Zane grinned, resting his chin on his palm says

"Any time now."

Ron and Lia closed their eyes...

And then—

Just when they thought it was over, Ron and Lia felt a sudden surge deep within. A faint echo of Zane’s words rang in Ron’s mind: "It’s an upgrade... you’ll know when you need it."

Magic erupted.

Ron’s crimson flame aura flared wildly before morphing—deeper, hotter—into a bluish flame. The very air around him began to sizzle and shimmer with heat. Lia’s soft green wind aura sharpened, darkening into a vibrant pinkish hue, swirling with razor-like edges. Within her aura, small spectral butterflies began to materialize, fluttering in eerie silence.

Both of them rose to their feet—wounded, yes, but their eyes now burned with furious determination. Their angry expressions matched the intensity of their growing aura, which expanded outward, shaking the ground.

The team leader took a step back, eyes wide with shock. "What...?"

But he quickly clenched his axe, gritting his teeth. "Tch... no matter!" he roared. "You will come with me!!"

His own magic erupted—white and violent—crackling around his body as he powered up to full strength.

Up in his room, Zane crunched his popcorn and sipped from his drink lazily. "Tch... they’re too weak to handle more of the boost I gave," he muttered. "Their bodies can barely contain some of it. Whatever."

A glowing hologram screen appeared beside him, flashing their updated battle powers:

Ron: 585

Lia: 578

Team Leader: 865

Ron spun his flaming spear, taking his stance. Lia readied her sword, her pink aura butterflies circling around her. They nodded to each other silently, in perfect sync.

The team leader growled, slamming his foot into the ground, and charged forward.

And so the fight began again—more intense than before—as Zane watched, eyes gleaming.

"They’re still weaker... but if they attack together, they can fill the gap," he smirked. "Alright then... guess I’ll give them a little extra help." . . . The battle reignited with furious intensity.

Ron lunged first, his bluish flame spear slicing through the air. Lia darted in next, her pink wind aura flaring as she slashed to distract. The rhythm formed—Ron attacked, Lia followed; Lia struck, Ron covered. Their strikes landed, forcing the team leader back, but they still lacked depth. They were running purely on adrenaline, their bodies aching and hearts pounding.

Suddenly, a calm voice echoed in Ron’s mind:

"Don’t be shaken... focus."

His eyes widened. Mr. Zane?

"Yes," Zane’s voice answered, steady and firm. "Now listen—change your grip. You need to increase the stab speed and sync perfectly with Lia. Only together can you beat him."

At the same moment, Lia heard Zane too—

"Angle your blade precisely. Align your rhythm with Ron’s. Let your breath and movement become one."

In their heightened state, their minds sharpened. Instinct took over. They began moving in perfect tandem. Their aura surged with clarity and power.

Ron stabbed. Lia slashed. Slash, stab, spin, dash. Their combined assault now pushed the team leader back with every blow. He stumbled, gritting his teeth as his defense cracked.

"What the hell!?" he growled. "How are they pushing me?! Why are their attacks so... in harmony!?"

He screamed and exploded with rage, his white aura surging violently in a shockwave that sent debris flying. "THAT’S IT!! YOU DIE! I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE DEAL ANYMORE!!"

Raising his axe high, he prepared his most terrifying technique—

"Supreme Axe—Devil Cutter!!"

Ron and Lia saw it, sensed the finality in his attack. They looked at each other. No words needed. This next clash would decide everything.

Their auras flared. Wind howled. Flames roared.

Ron stepped forward—

"Inferno Spear—Third Technique: Cinder Oblivion!"

A devastating thrust engulfed in blue-white flame, a strike so fierce it promised to reduce anything it touched to glowing ash.

Lia charged—

"Wind Butterfly—Third Technique: Hurricane Dash!"

Her body became a blinding pink gale, a living shockwave that tore through the battlefield with unstoppable force.

Their attacks clashed with the team leader’s axe midair—BOOM!

A massive explosion erupted, sending a blinding shockwave across the forest.

When the smoke cleared, the battlefield was silent.

The team leader’s shattered axe clattered to the ground—his upper body completely disintegrated into ash, his lower half collapsing lifelessly behind the two warriors. Their attacks had pierced straight through him.

Ron and Lia stood for a moment, breath heaving, before their heightened state faded and their bodies gave in. They dropped to their knees, bruised, cut, and battered—but alive.

Flat on the ground, they turned to each other, grinning weakly.

"We... did it..." they said in unison.
