Chapter 192: Updates

Jamal stood outside the house, away from the living quarters as he dialed Stefan’s line. He wanted to give Stefan the feedback on the DNA result before informing Tom about it.

Stefan received the call at the fifth ring, "Hey! You got the result?" Stefan asked expectantly immediately the call connected, since Jamal had told him earlier that he would get the result by the end of the day or the next morning.

"Yeah. It’s as we suspected. He’s not her biological father and they’re not related in any way," Jamal said, and Stefan let out a sigh of relief.

It all made better sense to him now. And for some reason, he was glad that Genevieve wasn’t in any way blood related to a monster like Ryan.

"That’s good. It makes all of this easier, don’t you think so?" Stefan asked, and Jamal raised a brow.

"Easier? Was it going to be hard on you if he was her biological father?" Jamal asked in confusion.

"Not that. I mean it will be easier for her to expose him if he isn’t her biological father..."

"What if she knew this whole time that he wasn’t her biological father?" Jamal cut in.

"I don’t think so. Judging by the tone of our conversations I’m not sure she knew," Stefan said, and Jamal frowned.

"None of this makes sense. How did she end up with Ryan, then? They claimed Abigail was the daughter of a maid Ryan forced himself on. Does Ryan not know that Genevieve is not his daughter? Why..."

"I think he knows. That is the reason he’s not leaving all he owns to her. That’s why he’s sending her away and trying to make her marry you as some sort of settlement for using her," Stefan said, and Jamal’s frown deepened as he thought about it.

"That makes sense. But has he always known? Or did he just find out about it recently hence the decision to give everything back to Abigail? If he had known for a long time why didn’t he bother having kids of his own instead of giving everything back to Abigail?" He asked, and just as he finished asking the question, something struck him.

"What if he didn’t have any other kids because he’s unable to?"

"Maybe he can’t have kids," Jamal and Stefan said at the same time.

"That’s a possibility," Stefan agreed, "by the way, have you talked to Tom about Genevieve coming over?"

"Yes. He said you could invite her over once the result is out. I think you should invite her now," Jamal said, still thinking about the possibility of Ryan being unable to father his own kids.

Was that the reason he was so determined to raise Josh as his own and wanted to get Josh’s biological father out of the picture?

"Alright. I will talk to her and let you know," Stefan said, trying to figure out how Genevieve ended up with Ryan, and wondering if he would be able to convince her to open up to him before the end of her visit.

"I will talk to Tom and let him know about the result so we know what to do next. By the way, how was your meeting with Mr Spencer? Did he agree to our terms?" Jamal asked and Stefan told him all about the meeting and when they were done they hung up the call.

Jamal dialed Tom’s line and it rang for a while but Tom didn’t receive the call. He figured that Tom was probably in the middle of a meeting or something important so he opted for a text instead.

[The DNA result.] he texted, attaching the document to it so that he could see the result himself.

Just as he turned to return inside, he remembered that he hadn’t heard from his mother in a while. So, he dialed her number instead.

"Hey, Jam!" She said the moment she received the call.

"I was beginning to think you abandoned me," he said, and she laughed.

"I’m sorry. I’ve been busy with a case and it’s been taking all of my time. And the time difference isn’t helping so much. Whenever I remember to call, it’s already late over there. None of this is an excuse. I’m just trying to let you know I’m swamped. How are you doing? How’s my grandson? And how’s Dawn?" His mother asked and Jamal smiled.

"We are all fine. How are you doing? How’s Dad? And how is Pres and Mila?" He asked, referring to his teenage siblings.

"They’re okay. Mila has been getting on my nerves a lot lately with her rebellious behavior. I suppose it’s the teenage phase. She wants to have her way with everything and she is keeping to herself a lot more lately. I don’t know how to get through to her. Presley on the other hand, I don’t understand him. It’s not helpful that Matt is away half the time and I’m so busy with work. Has either of them talked to you lately?" She asked and Jamal couldn’t help feeling guilty.

He had been so wrapped up in his personal business that he had not been checking on his siblings as he usually did.

"I haven’t spoken with them since before my trip to Westend. And that was two weeks ago. I will reach out to them after this call to find out how they’re doing," he said, and his mother sighed.

"Raising you was so much easier," she said with a soft sigh.

"I wasn’t exactly always with you in my teenage years. Maybe I’d have been just like them, you never can tell. You can ask granddad to invite Presley over and find out what’s wrong with him. And maybe ask Aunt Andy to talk to Mila. You know she adores her and will open up to her. Take it easy on them, and yourself," Jamal said, and she winced since she did not like the idea that her kids might open up to others but not to her.

"Yeah. Sure. I will. What’s the update over there? I guess you are still in touch with Tom and Harry?"

"Yeah. A lot is going on," he said and went on to tell her all that had happened since they last communicated.

"From being a driver to being a secretary and now you’re supposed to be his right hand man and date Abigail? You should be careful, Jam. If you ask me I think you should just run off with Abigail and Josh. It’s not like he will come down here to Ludus to find any of you. Your pictures are not out there so he doesn’t know who you are, and won’t find out either."

"He knows the family of the person I am claiming to be. He will take it out on them. Don’t worry. We are handling it. Soon it will be over. I don’t plan to be here for more than a month," Jamal assured her.

"So, how is the stuff with the cartel? Will it be resolved anytime soon?" Jamal asked, changing the subject.

"Well, that’s the case I was talking about. Jade and I are handling it. It’s keeping us really occupied. Harry and the others think we should leave the law out of it since it didn’t solve it the first time, and honestly, I agree. Don’t quote me anywhere, though," she said with a laugh, and Jamal chuckled, "but you know how Jade can be. She insists we go through the proper procedure. Alex says he will come out of hiding and testify even if that means going to Jail so that it can all be sorted out once and for all so that Andy and Mari can be safe, but Andy doesn’t want him to. Alex wants Harry and Tom to join hands with Alex and get the whole thing resolved, but Harry is hesitant because doing that would cause problems between him and Jade. The whole thing is complicated."

"So much is going on," Jamal said with a soft sigh, thinking about Mari and also wondering how Tom and Harry are able to manage the company, show up at home for their families, and also handle every other person’s problem.

He was barely managing to keep up here, and his other relationships were suffering. Before now he never had to worry about anything complicated other than running HAJ but all of a sudden it felt like he was in an action movie and he wasn’t even sure what his role in it was.

"Yeah. I miss you. When last did you speak with your grandfather?" She asked curiously.

"Last night. He calls me daily before I go to bed," Jamal said and just then he was notified of an awaiting call. He glanced at his screen and when he saw it was an unknown number he decided to receive it in case Barry was calling with another phone.

"I need to go now, Mom. I love you."

"I love you, more. Let me know if you need anything, okay? And even if I forget to call, you should know that I love you. Call your siblings," his mother said, and Jamal nodded.

"I will call," he promised and quickly accepted the other call, ending the call with his mother.
