Chapter 496: Chapter 333: A New Journey (Part 2)
Malin investigated the elderly lady’s connections and found that she had a wide network of associates—this phrase was put very positively.
She could have afternoon tea with nobles, till the land with farmers, and also work alongside laborers.
By the way, I forgot to introduce her. Lisa Sheringham is a relative of the little lamb—her original profession: a Magic Warrior, level nineteen, only one level shy of becoming Legendary.
It wasn’t that she lacked talent, but her husband was a mortal, and she had decided not to become Legendary until after his death.
She herself was an extremely powerful being; she complied with the examination previously just to give face to Malin, but unexpectedly, the test revealed issues, which she found very embarrassing.
So this matter was beyond Lady Anna’s control—she was from the Mage Tower, while the elderly Lisa was from the Church of the War God.
Nonetheless, the Church of the War God soon performed a public detection for the elderly lady, with over a dozen Mage Tower members, including Lady Anna, in attendance, ultimately confirming that the memory manipulation on the elderly lady had occurred at least thirty years ago.
Thus, the lead completely vanished—it’s very possible that the lady merely had a small hobby of gardening, and Faye was just unlucky to have stumbled upon it.
A manipulation from thirty years ago is virtually beyond repair, and it seems this little secret would plague the lady’s thoughts for a lifetime.
Malin could only find two apprentice girls from the Benevolent Church, teaching them some minor knowledge in exchange for helping him take care of Faye’s working hours.
The two girls benefited and worked diligently—after all, Malin’s status, even without his identity as a Godslayer (which was circulated in a small Transcendent circle), was already dazzling.
This left Faye somewhat unhappy—Malin’s "minor knowledge" was highly sought after in today’s circle of Transcendents, especially by that collaborating research institute; the most brilliant minds of various races tore into each other with knowledge daily, creating items that were well-received on the northern battlefields.
"Don’t be upset, once you’re in good health, I’ll take you to The Capital to have fun,"—these days, the place where noble youths most desired to visit was no longer hunting grounds or horse tracks, but the research institute’s firing range, where watching the ground being plowed by heavy calibers was the new spectacle they craved.
Of course, one must report their intent, or else sneaking in and being vaporized by a high-fired 155mm shell would not only lead to no compensation from the research institute, but they would also seek responsibility.
"I don’t want to go there, I hear it’s very noisy." Faye shook her head, then looked at Malin: "Do I look very terrible right now?"
"Much of it has faded away." Malin shook his head with a smile while trying not to laugh.
Then, inevitably, Faye pinched his waist.
"By the way, I have a treasure here, maybe you should give it a try." After Faye had vented her frustration, Malin smiled and took out an elixir—a concentrated potion made from the ground fruit of the World Tree, which should easily cure allergies.
.........
In a room void of light, a voice came to life; he coughed twice, then began to speak with a smoky voice tinged with electronic static, "Lady Lisa’s memory manipulation has been discovered."
"I am aware of the situation. It was a very unexpected event, and Lady Lisa was implicated," another sharp voice responded.
"We have confirmed that someone indeed targeted Lady Anna’s daughter, but we cannot ascertain who. Lisa has never liked that kind of flower; only a few of us are privy to this information. The perpetrator, obviously uninformed, skillfully used our previous manipulation to alter Lisa’s memory... We cannot warn Lady Anna," spoke a third voice, continuing until it fell silent.
"I feel like maybe we could make some kind of normal reminder to get in touch with Malin," hesitated the fourth voice.
"Do not reveal our secrets. Hoffman has died, leaving one fewer person who knows the past truths, but we must avoid the danger of that child learning all our secrets with any deliberate contact. The child is very suspicious; any intentional approach could lead to exposure," spoke the first voice.
"But Fate once said..."
"Don’t bring Fate into this conversation!"
"Enough," the first voice interrupted the argument between the two voices, coughing twice, "We must keep this secret safe. Gaiate has been searching for him all this time, but human effort has its limits. Once he passes, our mission will be complete. Guarding the secret is more important than anything, but someone trying to harm Lady Anna’s child is unacceptable. We must track down this individual."
"Leave it to me," a new voice joined in.
"...Very well, it’s yours to handle, Postmaster," said the first voice, and then the room fell silent.
.........
"Logan, you certainly took your time," Miriam frowned at her fiancé.
"Sorry, I was just picking out a tie," Logan said, extending his hand. "Today is Colin’s treat, so we’re going to have a big feast."
"You and your stomach," Seeing her fiancé smile like a child, Miriam sighed, "You’re a grown man, dear. Don’t let others see you like this, so childish, alright?"
"But it’s just a small, private gathering. Look, as Colin’s best friend, isn’t it alright for me to act a bit more naturally?"
"You men always find a way to twist things." Miriam couldn’t keep a straight face and burst out laughing first. "Alright, let’s go."
The two young people got into the carriage, and the family coachman took him and her to the villa. As soon as Logan stepped out of the carriage, he teased Miriam, "Every time I see Faye, it reminds me of how jealous you were of her."
"Who asked you two to look so chummy," Miriam replied with a laugh while stealthily pinching Logan’s waist.
"Who did you learn this from?"
"From Faye, of course."
The conversation between the two engaged came to a pause as they approached the villa’s grand entrance, where they were welcomed by Faye, "Welcome, Logan and Miriam. Thank you for coming to my discharge party today."
"Dear, when I heard about what happened, I was truly frightened," Miriam said, leaving her fiancé’s side and hugging Faye, "You look much better now."
"Yes, because we discovered that the acorns of the World Tree work wonders for allergies," Faye said with a smile, extending her right hand. Logan smiled and supported her hand, gently kissing the back of it, "I’m so grateful to the gods that you are safe, dear Lady Faye. Where’s your husband, Colin?"
"He’s inside, teaching my maids how to hold their ground in the kitchen."
"Ah, speaking of the kitchen, I really miss the times when Colin used to be with us. During our outings, we always followed Colin because we knew there would be delicious food," Logan said nostalgically, noticing a new carriage arriving, "Ah, Mr. Colin is here too. I recall Margaret had a daughter; that guy is so lucky."
"You want a daughter too?"
"Of course. Then I’ll marry her off to a man as outstanding as Colin."
"Dream on."
The lovers’ conversation ended there, and Logan nodded to Colin and Margaret with a smile.
"Haven’t you gone inside yet?"
"We were waiting for you. By the way, where are your children?" Logan inquired curiously at the two empty-handed.
"The nanny’s got them. Speaking of which, where are your kids?" Colin asked with a smile in return.
"Eagerly in production," Logan replied, only to have his impervious face pinched by Miriam’s hand.
When Faye led everyone inside the villa, they saw Colin putting on his coat.
"Dear, where are you going?"
"The kids have come across a small issue; I’ll be back shortly." After bidding farewell with a kiss to Faye and making small talk with Logan and the others, Colin left the villa.
"Is Colin always this busy?" Margaret asked her sister-in-law.
Faye nodded, "He’s always been like this, very busy."
"It’s normal for men to be busy," Miriam chimed in.
Completely disregarding the fragile hearts of the two gentlemen present.
