Chapter 1168: Section 718: Factory (3)
The battle with the zombies leaves no room for strategy. The Thanans, who believe in the doctrine of firepower, have been in a state of deathless conflict with the mutated zombies that swarm over this land like ants for thousands of years. Malin shows no mercy, nor is there any need for it—Konen even admits that the mutants here in Thainan have become completely chaotic. Their hard shells and hive mind differ entirely from the intelligent zombies in the northern regions.
If biochemicals like Konen are the lucky ones who have escaped the shadows of mutation, then Awakeners are the fortunate ones enlightened by the True Lord transformed by the old dean. The wise zombies who wish to usurp the planet from humans are also lucky. Only these utterly mutated zombies are monsters left with nothing but the instinct to kill, like the glowing zombies in the Swiss mountains.
Thus, in the following battles, Malin was always responsible for casting mass spells in areas with the most zombies, such as Slow or Fossilize to Mud.
Besides their strength, the most terrifying aspect of zombies is their speed.
What Malin needs to do is slow them down, letting them become targets for the soldiers.
The zombies’ onslaught lasted for half an hour. Realizing that more sacrifices could not eliminate the enemy, the zombies chose to retreat, and the Pioneer Corps opted not to pursue. Ahead lay denser forests. The best approach was to clear an open space and proceed steadily.
The legendary Thanans had long become accustomed to this. Malin once asked the rabbit named Ling Zuo Zuo and found that this is how the Thanans drove the zombies from the ruins of the cities they occupied.
In other words, recruiting legends was to cooperate with the Pioneer Corps, which relieved Malin—he genuinely feared the commander would impulsively order a full-scale assault into the woods.
For heaven’s sake, while zombie movement is hindered in the woods, Malin has seen them leap between the trees.
In other words, in forested terrain, the zombie attacks become more three-dimensional.
Fortunately, neither the corps commander nor Bei Luo was in a rush.
Sostak No.3 was somewhat dissatisfied with the pace, but after experiencing a full-scale attack from the Living Corpse Patrol, the kid stopped complaining about slow progress.
The reason seems to be that the zombies’ sudden attack shredded Sostak No.3’s beloved Thanan field uniform—though their assault couldn’t harm Sostak No.3, who, equipped with military-grade prosthetics, could punch out a zombie with one hit, the kid returned practically naked, which caused Jason to mock him for days.
Malin didn’t mock, but still thought that creating sensory organs for a military-grade compact prosthetic was a bit extravagant. Yet, considering Sostak No.3’s dream of becoming human, Malin expressed sincere empathy and comfort.
This made Sostak No.3 feel a lot better.
Then, during his second patrol mission, the kid wore full plate exoskeleton armor and wielded a 40mm shotgun—Malin truly could not call a 40mm weapon a gun, even if it fires shot rounds.
Sometimes Malin also takes turns patrolling—usually during large-scale tree felling, alongside regular legendary squads, they would call upon Malin.
The Pioneer Corps found that when Malin was present, any Living Corpse Patrol spotted within visual range would choose not to engage.
Sometimes they even left a couple of observers at a distance watching Malin.
"It seems this group of zombies has a master. To say the least, these mutant zombies have grown increasingly like a standard killing hive, more dangerous than the scariest bee people we’ve seen, as the largest known hive of bee people has only tens of thousands." Sima Specialist, an expert on zombies, was observing those two observers beside Malin. His binoculars allowed him to see the features of those two zombies: "Slender limbs, hands and feet adept at grasping, capable of more agile movement in the upper trees, their eyes are over thirty percent larger than their peers, and their pupils can zoom, possibly with built-in magnification."
"You mean they’re more like sentinels and reconnaissance scouts?" Malin asked, drawing a Revolver from his waist. Although this was a bit far, with the range bonus from Spiritual Energy, a .50 caliber should still be able to blow off these zombies’ heads.
"Ah, are you thinking of killing them? It’s useless; they aren’t so much alive as husks, controlled by others. Even if we kill them, more sentinels will soon replace them, and it might even lead to a large-scale attack. These two bullets are far more precious than their two lives, my Lord." Sima Sage smiled: "Thus, unless we need intelligence cover, we generally won’t kill them. This saves time for both sides and also dulls their vigilance."
"You mean the master has high intelligence and reasoning skills." Malin sheathed his weapon and looked at Sima Sage, who nodded vigorously: "Indeed, much like a queen bee, the master possesses exceedingly high intelligence, but they often channel these talents into means of slaughter, so sometimes to humans, they seem rather foolish."
"I see, but what are bee people, something I’ve never heard mentioned."
