Chapter 110: Ninety-five: The Edible Maid
"The Great Forest Land has already received the message, and according to the reply, a Divine Master will come in the spring to test Maya."
The next day, upon arriving at the Church, Colin shared with Malin a piece of news that was neither good nor bad.
It wasn’t bad because Maya’s abilities would finally be defined soon.
It wasn’t good because Maya was too powerful. In the Church’s tests, she could almost pinpoint where the poor sod Malin sparred with each day got injured.
Considering the intensity provided by the Church, her abilities were at least of a Prophet-class existence—this involved the tarot, crystal ball, and pendulum divination-related Transcendent Sequence, with tarot card readers, crystal ball gazers, and pendulum dowsers each having their own Sequences and varying strengths. For instance, the renowned Watcher sounded impressive, and when Malin first heard of this Sequence, he instinctively thought it could peek into Tianji and might even be a Deity at Sequence 0.
In reality, it could only reach Sequence 9, and this was because Sequence 10 was immovably Apprentice’s domain.
The ability was also quite simple: to see through a wall not thicker than two centimeters.
Malin nearly died laughing in the hall when he learned the truth.
"However, Maya’s abilities are obviously not limited to this. She is still young, and although her power is confined to mirrors, with systematic guidance, she at least has the potential of a Prophet," Colin said then.
A Prophet, a seeker of confirmation at Sequence 2, equated to a Divine Master-level figure in The Great Forest Land when compared horizontally.
However, for Malin, that was too powerful. It wasn’t that he was jealous of his sister, but he felt that if Maya’s abilities were too strong, the Orcs of The Great Forest Land might be willing to destroy everything, even if it meant taking Maya with them.
If Maya agreed, Malin had nothing to say. But if she didn’t, Malin might have to spend his lifetime rescuing his sister.
The idea of one person against a nation was exhilarating.
"I don’t want to become stronger, I just want to stay by my brother’s side." Maya pouted, visibly upset.
But no one took her words seriously. Malin thought the girl was talking nonsense.
"No matter, it will be at least half a year before the Divine Master comes this way." As Colin said this, he took a report from a Proxy who walked up, glanced over it, and then passed it to Malin: "The autopsy report for the Mobike family."
"Why did you think to show this to me?" Malin asked with a smile as he took the report.
"The Mentor said you’re already twelve. You can’t be considered a child anymore but not quite an adult either. So, anything that should be seen won’t spare you a share, after all, you are a concerned party," Colin said before taking a seat on a nearby chair: "Several Churches are trying to trace the Mobike family case, but it happened long ago, over half a year now, and we simply can’t track down the flow of funds."
"Honestly, there are too many banks. Almost every Church has one. Besides that, there are regional banks organized by wealth merchants and the state banks of kingdoms. I could say this: I go out for a walk in the night market and can see three clerks drumming up savings." Malin spoke sarcastically: "With so many banks, our opponent has it too easy transferring funds. Just a few inter-bank transactions and, with the current banking system records, it’s virtually impossible to continue the chase. Colin, my personal suggestion is that every loan must require secured collateral."
"No, our bank doesn’t issue commercial loans. We only cater to agriculture, and farmers usually pay their debts with their labor and harvests," Colin said with a smile: "We and the God of Wealth focus on different demographics. Naturally, the people who come to us for loans are also different."
This made Malin nod: "That’s a relief." No longer worried about his money disappearing, Malin opened the report.
It was nearly identical to the one examined with Matilda yesterday. Both children were stabbed in the heart and lungs, the knife piercing through the ribs and directly puncturing the lungs and heart—a single wound would guarantee the child’s death, and double the damage meant death would come even quicker.
Lady Mobike was stabbed in the back of her heart. The same kind of injury but Malin pitied her, she must have died amidst confusion and fear, killed by a loved one.
Finally, there was Mr. Mobike. Malin looked at the report: "His heart was crushed?"
"Yes, crushed. Since the time of death was too long ago, we don’t know if it was this or the bullet that lodged in his brain that caused his death," Colin remarked.
"Then it must be this reason because a person with a crushed heart can’t possibly..." As Malin spoke, he clapped his hands: "Could it be a Transcendent with a sequence similar to that of the Necromancers, manipulating Mr. Mobike’s already dead body to commit suicide?"
"Indeed, it’s possible, but since the incident happened so long ago, we can’t confirm a definitive connection. Mr. Mobike’s soul has also returned to the Mana River. Interestingly, he was an unbeliever," Colin added.
"Do the souls of unbelievers return to the Mana River?" Malin was curious.
"Yes, believers like us will join the Divine Realm after death, while the souls of unbelievers return to the Mana River, to be cleansed of all worldly impurities and reincarnated."
