Chapter 650: 645 came knocking on the door
I don’t know whether it was the sight that made him sentimental or something else.
When the old gentleman heard these words, his eyes suddenly turned red.
Then he slowly said to Gu Chen, "Anyway, all that is in the past, there’s no need to bring it up.
Over the years, my comrades-in-arms have either fallen ill or passed away; nearly all who remain are soldiers I once led. Now that we’re getting on in years, none of us have the experience to deal with such messy matters anymore.
I keep wondering, how on earth did I live to be this old?" He couldn’t help but sigh as he said this.
Looking at him, it was as though he felt helpless about the future but had to grudgingly accept it nonetheless.
"All these things will pass sooner or later," Gu Chen comforted him considerately at that moment.
After hearing this, he laughed heartily and then said to Gu Chen, "I’ve lived to this ripe old age; I’ve already come to terms with many things. There’s no such thing as a feast that doesn’t end. But if I could see those brothers of mine again, that would satisfy me. Nobody knows how much longer someone my age can live, after all."
Even though he said this with a smile on his face, Gu Chen could still see the fear in his eyes.
It was his fear of the unknown future, his fear of death.
There’s no one who isn’t afraid of dying, and he’s no exception.
Even if he had been a soldier, facing life and death in his younger years.
But how many can truly confront death head-on?
"You don’t have to worry too much; you seem quite healthy to me," Gu Chen said at that moment.
"Healthy? Healthy my ass. Do you know that I used to have check-ups once a month, then it became once a week, and now it’s every three days? I may be old, but I’m not senile. Do you think I don’t understand what that means?"
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen himself felt a bit surprised.
Because from his appearance, he didn’t seem like someone with health issues.
"No matter how long I’ve got left, while I still have some breath in me, I should take care of these things that need to be done. One shouldn’t live a pathetic life. There are still many things I haven’t done in this lifetime," he said to Gu Chen, and to those unaware, it sounded like he was preparing for one last struggle.
After hearing this, Gu Chen felt a mix of laughter and tears.
Of course, he knew that the matter wasn’t really a laughing one.
At the old man’s age, although he never spoke of many things, he still cared deeply about them in his heart.
The reality of birth, aging, sickness, and death was all too apparent at his age.
Seeing the old man, Gu Chen could only think that such is life, and it’s something everyone must go through.
And so, Gu Chen just drove on in silence.
By the time they arrived the next day, when the sky was faintly bright, Gu Chen was already there with them.
Upon arriving, Gu Chen hurriedly found a hotel where they could stay.
The old gentleman had been dozing off and on in the car, a little snooze here and there.
It was clear to see that the old gentleman was truly tired, so the most pressing issue was to let him have a good rest.
After reaching the hotel, Gu Chen checked into a room, and once in the room, the old gentleman went straight to sleep.
Gu Chen saw it clearly; the old gentleman didn’t hesitate at all.
Only after the old gentleman had laid down and fallen asleep did Gu Chen truly feel at ease.
Nothing else frightened him as much as the old man not getting proper rest and potentially harming his health.
If that were the case, his sin would indeed be great.
Gu Chen couldn’t say he was very tired, but he was a bit hungry instead.
He casually found a nearby restaurant, ordered some dishes, and then returned to the hotel with the food.
As he ate, the old man at his side slept soundly.
With nothing better to do, Gu Chen decided to lie down on the bed and rest for a while.
But no sooner had he laid down than there was a knock on the door.
Hearing the knock, Gu Chen went to open the room door.
He had thought it might be the hotel staff, but to his surprise, it was a man in a suit.
Upon seeing Gu Chen, the man immediately asked, "Excuse me, are you Mr. Gu?"
Taken aback by his question, Gu Chen replied, "Yes, what do you need me for?"
"Did you save an elderly person on Dai Mountain yesterday?" he continued.
Gu Chen was startled by the question and didn’t understand why this man was looking for him.
"Did something happen to the old man?" Gu Chen asked curiously.
In his mind, he thought there surely couldn’t be such a dramatic turn of events.
It wasn’t possible that after he had saved the old man, the man had just... passed away?
And now his family was coming to find him?
"Hello, the family of that elderly person intends to meet you in person to express their gratitude properly. I was wondering if you could spare the time to come with me?" the man asked politely.
Relieved that no one was in trouble, Gu Chen felt at ease.
After all, as long as it wasn’t about someone being in trouble, nothing else was an issue.
"No need for thanks; I merely did what anyone would do," Gu Chen waved his hand dismissively, showing no interest in being thanked.
He didn’t plan to make a big deal out of the situation.
It almost felt like he had saved the entire world.
Secretary Jin, upon hearing Gu Chen’s refusal, became visibly anxious.
"Sir, if it’s convenient for you, please come with me. The family has been looking for you for some time now and hopes to thank you in person. Your help was very important to them," he said, hoping Gu Chen would agree to come.
Gu Chen frowned upon hearing this, but truly, he hadn’t taken the matter to heart.
However, he could tell that the old man’s family must be quite capable.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to find him here.
He had been here for merely an hour.
The fact that they found him in such a short time was a testament to their influence in the area.
But their capability was their own, and it had nothing to do with Gu Chen.
"There’s no need, there’s nothing to be grateful for. I believe that even if it weren’t me, someone else would have come forward to help," Gu Chen still refused Secretary Jin, then he closed the door.
Secretary Jin was left outside, with a look of confusion on his face.
