Chapter 109: The Art of Speaking_1
Tian Laosì looked at Chenzi with a face full of pity.
"The work is actually simple, but once you start digging, the cement floor is definitely ruined, it all has to be broken up."
Chenzi chuckled, "Not a problem, just tell me what you need me to do."
Tian Laosì thought for a moment.
"Speaking of tools, you’ll need to buy a few pickaxes, and ideally, you should get a drill. Cement isn’t like bricks that can be pried up; you have to use a drill to break it!"
Chenzi nodded, his face resolute.
"Alright, I’ll go buy them now."
When Tian Laosì heard that Chenzi was going to town to buy a drill, he hurriedly said, "Don’t rush, don’t buy a drill, it’s too expensive. You can go to the repair shops in town; some places offer rentals."
"Pay a bit of money, and if you can rent one to bring back, that’s best. After all, saving even a little is worth it."
A drill isn’t often needed and is expensive; buying one just isn’t cost-effective.
Chenzi may have money, but saving when possible is certainly good. Who would complain about having too much money?
Chenzi nodded, "Thanks for the tip, Brother Four."
He really didn’t choose the wrong person for the job; Tian Laosì was truly reliable, thinking of everything for him.
Tian Laosì, fearing he had missed something, pondered again.
After a while, he said, "Oh right, Chenzi, you’d better bring back half a tricycle load of bricks. After all, once the cement is dug up, only soil is left. Lay some bricks at the doorstep; it’ll be cleaner!"
"Brother Four really thinks of everything."
Chenzi was always sweet-tongued.
As the saying goes, kind words warm for three winters, while harsh words hurt more than cold in June.
The relationship with anyone, one is built on sincerity, empathy.
And two, it’s based on the way one speaks.
Chenzi considers this the art of conversation.
For instance, take the same two people with good intentions.
One says, "Look at you, you’re bear-like, even pigs are smarter than you, try to be more alert, will you?"
The other says, "Actually, I think that if you pay attention next time, you’ll definitely do much better than this time!"
Comparing the two, one would surely prefer to open up to the latter.
After discussing the greenhouse repairs, they chatted briefly.
Then Chenzi left the house and headed toward the bus stop for the city.
Upon reaching the city, he first went to a hardware store, bought several pickaxe handles, and furthermore, a watering can and a hoe, among other farming tools.
After all, this type of cordyceps needs tilling and watering.
After buying these items, Chenzi found a small shop and bought a pack of Xiao Xiong Panda cigarettes before heading into a larger repair shop by the roadside.
The owner thought he was there to get a car fixed and glanced outside, seeing nothing, he looked at Chenzi curiously.
"Where’s the car?"
Chenzi smiled, took a cigarette out of his pocket, and handed one to the repair shop owner.
"I’m not here to fix a car; I heard you can rent drills here, so I came to ask."
The repair shop owner initially didn’t want to take Chenzi’s cigarette but seeing it was a pack of Xiao Xiong Panda, he couldn’t resist taking it.
Xiao Xiong Panda, that was a quality smoke.
He gave Chenzi a smile, "Oh, you want to borrow a drill, eh? How big of a drill do you need? I’ll check if we have one available in the shop that’s right for you."
The repair shop had plenty of drills, since each car, be it a van, sedan, truck or bus, required different models.
So the repair shop indeed had a variety of drills.
Chenzi didn’t know much about such matters; indeed, he was utterly clueless about this stuff.
He furrowed his brow, "I just need to drill through cement, nothing demanding, as long as it can get through the cement."
Having said this, he took out his lighter, lit his cigarette, and then passed the lighter over to the owner.
Hearing it was for drilling cement, the owner understood; it was for breaking ground.
Usually, drilling cement meant demolishing floor.
The owner, lighting his cigarette with Chenzi’s lighter, took a hefty drag.
Can’t deny, premium tobacco really is fragrant!
He exhaled a puff of smoke, ’Really, all of them can drill, but take the largest one. The large one is fast and saves effort; a whole room could probably be smashed in half an hour. Apart from being noisy, no problem!"
Seeing the boss’s straightforward manner, Chenzi nodded, "Alright, then I’ll rent a large one."
The boss couldn’t help but laugh at the remark.
"Why don’t you ask how much it costs before agreeing?"
Those who came to his shop, whether to fix a car or rent a drill, would usually first ask, "Can it be fixed?"
The second question would be about the cost.
After all, earning money is hard these days, and everyone wants to get things done for as little as possible.
Fearful of being overcharged.
Yet this lad agreed without any hesitation, without the slightest concern of being ripped off.
Chenzi felt somewhat bewildered by the question, thinking, "If the large one suits me best, then I rent the large one. What’s the big deal?"
He didn’t quite grasp the boss’s point.
"Didn’t you recommend what was suitable for me?"
The boss’s eyebrows arched, and he couldn’t suppress a hearty smile.
"Alright, a man of understanding! I love doing business with someone who gets it."
Truth be told, he was actually quite annoyed by others’ inquiries.
Especially those who half understand.
You give them the best and most suitable option, but they always suspect that you recommend it because it has the highest profit margin and that it’s all about the money for you.
That’s the typical case of suspecting ulterior motives in others.
The boss didn’t take Chenzi into the repair shop but fetched the large drill from inside and handed it to him.
"For this item, the deposit is one hundred, and the rent is seven a day, but for you, let’s make it six," the boss said, giving Chenzi a discount.
The boss had always liked to keep things straightforward.
Chenzi was straightforward, so he was too!
If someone trusts you, you can’t let them down!
Chenzi chuckled, "That won’t do, then you’re losing a buck."
The boss laughed heartily.
"What’s there to lose? Besides, I’ve done too many deals. Those driving fancy cars, looking all prim and proper, can sometimes make you furious, fussing over a dime."
"Today, I’ve rarely come across someone so straightforward. I’m happy, not at a loss at all!"
The boss was a tall and burly man who spoke with a hint of that chivalrous spirit.
It made Chenzi think that this elder brother wasn’t too bad.
"Then it’s even less acceptable. If we agreed on seven, then seven it is!"
After speaking, Chenzi dug out seven bucks from his pocket and stuffed it into the boss’s hand.
The boss had never before seen someone who wouldn’t take advantage of a bargain.
This young man was truly too interesting – a kindred spirit!
He didn’t insist any further, as going back and forth is pointless.
"How about this, if you don’t mind the gesture, let’s become friends. My family’s all gone home for the holiday, and it’s just me looking after the repair shop during the New Year."
"Come on inside for a cup of tea, how does that sound?"
Today was slow on business, and with everyone heading home for the New Year, he was feeling a bit restless.
It was just the right time to have a chat with this young man to ease the boredom.
It was just after four, still a bit early for cooking dinner.
Chenzi had nothing urgent on his hands and nodded, "No problem at all."
He then took the pack of cigarettes from his pocket with a grin, "You’ve got tea, I’ve got cigarettes, let’s have a good chat!"
With that, the two of them entered the repair shop.
Chenzi’s decision to come in wasn’t just because he thought the elder brother was a good guy, but more importantly, because someone running a repair shop was sure to know a lot of drivers. And these drivers were a diverse bunch.
Given his straightforward nature, he certainly couldn’t have few friends.
Chenzi was interested in inquiring about potential sales channels for himself.
He had good merchandise on hand but no connections whatsoever.
If he could get some leads from the boss, that would be more than ideal.
