Chapter 1231: 85

The barrel of the "Eagle" burst into flames, and the bullet successfully hit the skeletal claw.

The effect of "Screech" took place first; the monster’s figure paused, and the claw that originally aimed at Luande’s back missed its mark.

As for the effect of "Mutation," Chen Ran saw it too.

"Mutation" can cause malignant changes to an enemy’s wound. In the blink of an eye, the place Chen Ran aimed at was exactly at the monster’s most injured waist and abdomen.

The flesh there began to proliferate, forming a small tumor. But apart from that, there seemed to be no other immediate effects.

However, Chen Ran could not follow up with another shot of "Screech," as it had already lost its significance. In his terrified state, Luande probably lost the ability to fight. Relying solely on Chen Ran, he definitely could not both control and damage the monster alone.

Moreover, his spiritual energy was depleting fast. Including earlier, he had already fired four shots of "Screech" and one of "Mutation," consuming over half of his spiritual energy. He needed to conserve some resources for future battles.

The skeletal claw indeed fell into confusion under the influence of "Screech," but it quickly recovered.

Ignoring Luande, who had already run a short distance, the monster turned around, its malicious eyes fixed on Chen Ran.

Previously, it targeted Luande because he was close enough; but in reality, this monster was not mindless. It could, of course, sense that Chen Ran was the real threat. f|ree(w)ebn\o.vel.com

Those terrifying screeching attacks that echoed in its head were orchestrated by him.

Upon seeing the monster refocus on him, Chen Ran felt somewhat at ease.

At least Luande wouldn’t die in front of him.

He didn’t blame Luande for turning and fleeing. It wasn’t his fault; Luande didn’t have such strong willpower attributes, nor did he have a symbiotic Spiritual Body to assist him. Under the class of spell-like abilities of the enemy, this was inevitable.

What remained now was to figure out how he himself could survive.

As soon as the monster’s hand raised, targeting him, he instantly dodged, while the effect of [Forcefield Protection] enveloped him.

The extended claw was successfully evaded and did not hit him.

This also allowed Chen Ran to recognize that where he stood was the limit of the monster’s attack range.

Chen Ran immediately ran.

That meant he and Luande were fleeing in two different directions.

The monster didn’t hesitate and directly chased after him.

The injuries on its waist and abdomen had some impact, as its speed was noticeably slower than at the initial encounter.

But still faster than Chen Ran.

Once Chen Ran was back within its attack range, both skeletal claws swooped toward him.

Chen Ran used a short knife to parry and redirect one claw, but the other was unavoidable. He had to exert all his effort just to slightly fend it off.

Pushing off the force of the previous claw, he managed a side dodge, but couldn’t completely avoid being grazed by the claws.

[Forcefield Protection] saved his life.

The claw connected where his neck and shoulder met, striking him. The white glow of [Forcefield Protection] flashed, instantly shattering like glass struck by a heavy hammer. The wire of his hanging communicator broke and fell off, leaving a wound on his shoulder as the anti-curse suit tore.

Whether it was the damaged and lost communicator or the torn anti-curse suit, these would be problematic issues. But Chen Ran couldn’t worry about them now.

He could only be grateful for having [Forcefield Protection]; otherwise, his arm might have been ripped off entirely. He was even more grateful that it wasn’t a direct hit; otherwise, even [Forcefield Protection] wouldn’t have saved his life.

Enduring the pain and the tingling sensation of the curse mist seeping through the torn anti-curse suit, Chen Ran fired a bullet infused with "Screech," causing the monster to pause again, as he sprinted at full speed into the distance.

He slightly extended the distance, but the monster soon resumed its pursuit.

Chen Ran knew this couldn’t go on. His spiritual energy was depleting too severely under such pressure. Even if he made no mistakes in his subsequent responses, he could only manage three more shots of "Screech"; and [Forcefield Protection] could at most be activated one more time.

He would be chased to death, and that moment would arrive soon.

He had to come up with another plan.

Earlier, he had observed that in their current small section of ruins, there might be something he could utilize to survive.

Chen Ran scanned his surroundings, then his eyes lit up upon spotting a half-concealed stone door, appearing to lead downhill.

With no room for hesitation, the open terrain would surely lead to his demise; Chen Ran had no choice but to head there, gambling on his luck.

He hoped the stone door could be closed. Of course, this chance was slim, so if the stone door couldn’t close, he hoped the place it led to had a complex environment. This would be beneficial for Chen Ran to engage in skirmishes with the enemy, rather than being passively attacked as he was now in this open terrain, once the enemy closed in to attack range.
