Chapter 1084: Chapter 1084: Shen Family Grows Suspicious 4

"They know you’re in the military and admire you a lot," He Zhilan explained with a smile, then took each child by the hand and walked alongside He Teng back home.

At first, the two children were shy, but after talking with He Zhilan for a while, they gradually warmed up to her. When Zhilan reached out to hold their hands and walk with them, they shyly lowered their heads but didn’t pull away.

Coincidentally, the two children’s home wasn’t far from the Niu Family’s house, so the four of them traveled together for most of the way. They only parted ways at the Niu Family’s doorstep. When the children parted, they seemed a little reluctant, but it was clear to Zhilan that they held both respect and affection for He Teng, this quiet uncle figure.

After waving goodbye to the two children, Zhilan followed He Teng into the Niu Family’s house. The Clan Leader was no longer present, and Niu’s mother had already tidied up the room for the two of them.

Life in the village was quite similar to life back at the He Family’s old home. After eating, there wasn’t much else to do, so everyone prepared to rest.

However, if one really compared, life in the village was a bit more difficult than that in the He Family’s old home. Shockingly, this place still didn’t have electricity even now, and most households used homemade animal-fat oil lamps for lighting.

After dinner, the mountain village quickly fell into silence. Understanding the local habits, Zhilan and He Teng returned to their room after dinner.

"I remember Niu Rang always bragging about how beautiful his hometown was. Now that I see it, he wasn’t exaggerating at all. This place is beautiful, and the people here are so kind. Being here, it makes your heart feel especially at peace," Zhilan said with a smile. "Brother, I actually really like it here."

Other than the lack of electricity, everything else was easy to get used to.

He Teng grunted in response, "As long as you like it, I was just worried you wouldn’t be able to adapt."

"Not at all~ It’s really nice here. The people live very pure lives. Maybe it’s because there’s so little communication with the outside world, and the information is closed off, but everyone’s life revolves entirely around this stretch of mountains and waters." Zhilan spoke sincerely, clearly fond of the simple, carefree lifestyle here. No matter how much the outside world changed, it seemed to have no effect on this place.

While Zhilan was talking, He Teng deliberately paid attention to her expression. Words can deceive, but a person’s eyes and facial expressions when they speak cannot. He could tell she genuinely liked this place. The smile at the corner of her lips reached all the way to her eyes as she spoke.

"Oh, Brother!" Zhilan suddenly called out to He Teng, but before she spoke further, something amusing seemed to occur to her, and she couldn’t help bursting into laughter. "Those two kids this afternoon were really funny. They called me Sister, called Niu Rang Brother, but called you Uncle. Oh, they also called the Clan Leader Uncle."

The Clan Leader was about the same age as He Teng’s father.

He Teng’s eyebrows twitched slightly as he looked at his petite, smug little wife, visibly helpless. "You’re that happy about me being called old? Did you tell them you’re my wife?"

"I did," Zhilan nodded with a smile.

"Then why didn’t you tell them we’re married? Them calling you Sister and me Uncle messes up the seniority." He Teng, surprisingly, took it seriously. His young wife’s age made him particularly sensitive to being called old.

"Oh, it’s fine, Uncle He. I think it’s nice being called that. It highlights how young I look, so I guess you’ll have to keep being Uncle," Zhilan teased, grinning mischievously. Seeing He Teng’s face darken only made her more pleased with herself. When she had teased him enough, she quickly changed the subject, saying, "By the way, this village doesn’t have a school. The two kids told me that none of the nearby villages have schools either, so the children here don’t get to study. How does Niu Rang know how to read then?"
