Chapter 1074: Chapter 1074: Value 4

Lin Chan was complaining over here, when the doorbell rang. He thought it must be Chen Yun, who was on his way to work and had brought him breakfast. While walking to the door, he continued telling He Teng, "Your boss informed Xing Ye about it. The army couldn’t find you, so they asked Xing Ye to relay their message to you. They want you to think carefully about your decision. To put it bluntly, the army doesn’t want to lose someone as talented as you. They understand and empathize with your difficulties, so they’ve decided to give you some time to reconsider. Right now, when people ask about you, the army says you’re participating in a secret mission. When you return will depend on when your mission is complete, but the army hopes this amount of time won’t be too long. Oh, and one more particularly important thing: last time, when we met Gu En with the Gu Family and the Lan Family, that little nutcase actually admitted in front of everyone that she was the one who shot Niu Rang. But later, she vehemently denied ever saying such a thing. Unbelievable! It’s infuriating!"

Rambling as usual, Lin Chan didn’t even look at the person outside the door. He opened it directly while still talking to He Teng on the call, "Anyway, you and Zhilan don’t need to come back anytime soon. If possible, just call me to let us know that you and Zhilan are doing fine!"

But standing outside wasn’t Chen Yun as Lin Chan had thought. Instead, it was Grandmother Gu, Mother Gu, and Lan Li.

The three of them listened and watched as Lin Chan opened the door without looking at them, then turned around and walked back into the house while continuing his phone conversation. Hearing the content of the call, the three exchanged glances. They were certain that Lin Chan was talking to He Teng—Lin Chan definitely knew where He Teng and He Zhilan were.

The open door was, for the people outside, an invitation to enter. Without hesitation, Grandmother Gu and Mother Gu removed their shoes and stepped inside. They called out to Lin Chan, "You’re talking to He Teng on the phone. Can you let us say a few words to Zhilan?"

Hearing the voices behind him, Lin Chan froze mid-step. Turning around to glance at the people at the door, he muttered under his breath, "Why is it you guys? Where’s Chen Yun?"

"It was us all along," Lan Li replied. "When we arrived, we didn’t see Chen Yun. We rang the doorbell, and you came to open the door for us yourself."

"Damn it! I thought it was Chen Yun! Get out! Get out! I don’t want to see you!" Lin Chan cursed, quickly hiding his phone behind his back, guarding it as if defending against bandits from the Gu Family.

"Lin Chan, I’m begging you on behalf of this aunt. Please let me say a few words to Zhilan, will you?" Mother Gu’s voice was imploring, as she had clearly overheard Lin Chan mention He Zhilan during his call. She was certain Lin Chan had been talking to He Teng just moments ago.

They had known the truth for days now, and for the Gu Family, every day, every moment, and even every second was torturous.

The Gu Family couldn’t risk outsiders finding out that He Zhilan was actually Gu Zhilan, but they desperately wanted to see He Zhilan—if only for a glimpse. Even hearing her curse at them would be enough. Just one meeting, just one chance to see their daughter, to say to her, "We’re sorry."

Thousands of miles away, He Zhilan noticed that He Teng had suddenly stopped speaking while holding the phone. She gave him a questioning look. "Could Lin Chan have hung up the phone? I haven’t even had a chance to say anything yet!"

Muttering to herself, He Zhilan reached for the phone. What she heard was Mother Gu’s heartfelt plea to Lin Chan.

Lin Chan hadn’t hung up the phone—he had only hidden it behind him. Though his voice was low, it was still clear enough for the two on the other side of the call to hear the conversation happening here word for word.
