Chapter 633: Who Is He
Chapter 633: Who Is He
The Divine Envoy felt every cell in his body and every pore on his skin trembling with ecstatic frenzy. Every Earth would experience such a magnificent feast before it was ultimately abandoned and chosen for destruction. Those who guarded it would be utterly annihilated. Everything it possessed would be taken away for eternity. All that remained would be plundered and squeezed utterly dry.
Witnessing each civilization struggle and resist in their apocalypse, playing out one tragic scene after another, was far more entertaining than watching those dull and hollow space operas in Eden.
This Earth was a little different because it had the corpses of those monsters buried within it. Though other Earths had buried monsters as well, they were dwarfed in both number and reputation of those who were buried in this Earth.
Eden had been repeatedly testing the monsters’ limits. The gods wanted to know what abilities they still possessed. Would they sacrifice their final hope of return for the sake of these blue planets?
The data from previous probing attempts had been mixed. They were both promising and disappointing. But this experiment was of paramount importance.
The Divine Envoy stood high above the clouds. A tide of star beasts surged below him, charging toward the colossal city of Great Xia that was famed for never having fallen.
He attuned himself to even the slightest fluctuations in energy between heaven and earth. His heart was in his throat. Yet, disappointingly, the graveyard remained silent. The slumbering monsters seemed to have truly perished.
... Not coming out? I don’t believe it.
The Divine Envoy looked at the three white clouds in the sky.
Cloud Vortex Barrier.
He could see everything happening within the barrier. The three Grand Commanders of Great Xia, the ones its people took immense pride in, were now trapped in lethal memories.
The ones most important to them had become their enemies, forcing them to draw their blades. It was the ultimate test of humanity and faith. He was curious what kind of answers these three indigenous warriors, who had even made it onto Eden’s high-priority watchlist, would give?
And so, he watched as Hua Qinglian completely sealed off his emotions and ruthlessly attacked his former friend Xie Yuxiao. He saw Li Donglou ignite himself with Ye Zhichen, as if in a desperate, tragic farewell. He witnessed Chu Yuncheng kneeling before his old mentor, Cao Cao, severing their bond by cutting his robes.
They all chose to fight. Even when everything was beyond redemption, they never extinguished the will to battle.
Interesting.
A faint curve appeared at the corner of the Divine Envoy’s lips. Yet, the Cemetery of the Ancestors remained silent.
"So patient," he muttered in mild disappointment. "Since that's the case, let’s escalate things further."
He issued a command.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.
Ten more white portals materialized amidst the beast horde outside the city. The star beasts didn’t hesitate as they charged through the portals. In that instant, they traversed thousands of meters, emerging from white pillars of light within Xiajing.
These Dimensional Gates were a strategic weapon newly approved by Eden’s Ethics Committee for use on the Earth battlefield. It would make this a complete, one-sided massacre. The fragile defensive systems these pitiful Earth ants had painstakingly built were nothing more than the childish games of kindergarteners before Dimensional Gates.
Countless star beasts poured through the portals and into Xiajing. The arrival of catastrophe was always nakedly cruel. As civilian casualties followed immediately, wounded soldiers, barely able to stand, rushed out of hospitals, dragging their broken bodies toward the brutal, ferocious beast horde. They flung themselves into battle like moths to a flame.
Workers, rogue cultivators, students... The white-haired elderly, children with yellowed locks... Everyone was forced to fight for their own survival.
Dozens of formidable auras erupted from the city’s many academies. Elderly professors burned the last of their lifespans as they fought to the death at the academy gates—just to buy their students enough time to escape...
In White Deer Academy, the Headmaster and Dean, who had only awakened half a day ago, tore apart the C-type bandages wrapped around their bodies and charged toward the portals.
Some cried. Some fought. The city's order was collapsing. The woman standing at the pinnacle of Great Xia, Tan Baiqu, trembled violently as she watched the scene unfolding in the distance.
Grade Five star beasts could already be considered Beast Kings. Once they entered the city, the destruction they would unleash would far surpass that of the battlefield. Buildings would be reduced to rubble, but worse still, the civilian casualties would be immeasurable and irreparable.
In the distance, martial artists from all directions frantically intercepted the star beasts surging through the portals. Some soared through the air. Some launched star pellets in desperate strikes. Their strength varied but their purpose was the same.
Civilians were fleeing in a mad panic within the fallen districts. Their cries of despair shook the heavens, turning the city into a living hell.
"Screech—"
A piercing avian cry tore through the chaos. Tan Baiqu looked up and into the distant sky, her pupils suddenly constricting in horror. Portals had appeared in the sky as well.
Flying star beasts cut through the heavens as if passing through a shimmering water screen. Their scissor-like wings sliced the sky apart.
Flying star beasts! At last, they have arrived.
Tan Baiqu's heart turned ice-cold.
It’s over!
The earth-bound star beasts could still be contained within a few districts and slowly exterminated over time, but the flying star beasts that had invaded the city were nothing short of a death sentence.
The battlefield would be forcefully expanded in an instant. Defenses would become exponentially more difficult to maintain.
"Grand Elder, we..." Beside Tan Baiqu, an elder of the Tan family spoke, his voice trembling. "We still can't contact the Patriarch. Should we start taking action to preserve the family’s wealth and evacuate our people while there's still time?"
Tan Baiqu shook her head. Ever since the true Patriarch, Tan Qingying, had gone into ‘seclusion,’ Tan Baiqu had been promoted to Grand Elder and seized control of the Tan family's power. She had performed admirably after securing absolute authority.
A family of Martial Saints like the Tan family had long prepared a thorough evacuation and survival plan in case of apocalyptic disaster. At the very least, they could ensure the survival of their bloodline and some of their wealth, waiting for the opportunity to rise again.
"Cancel the evacuation plan. Order everyone in the family—defend Great Xia and face the battle head-on!" Tan Baiqu’s voice was low yet resolute. "This is my final command."
Silver light surged around her as layers of metallic armor materialized around her body. It was Great Xia’s latest technological marvel—the Star Combat Suit.
Tan Baiqu leaped into the sky, charging toward the swarm of flying star beasts in the distance. She was not alone. Many others had made the same choice, as martial artists rose into the sky using battle armor or their own strength for one final battle.
For a fleeting moment, a bright, youthful face flashed through Tan Baiqu’s mind.
Li Xiaofei. Where is he now?
Tan Baiqu pushed the thought away and accelerated toward the flying star beasts without hesitation.
A hundred meters.
Fifty meters...
Twenty meters...
Tan Baiqu was fully prepared for battle. However— Without warning, space ahead suddenly twisted. Her vision blurred as if she had put on a pair of oil-smeared glasses. Then, a wave of dizziness surged over her.
To her astonishment, the ferocious, bloodthirsty flying star beasts in the sky ahead crashed into the distorted space and plummeted like drunken fools. Every single star beast that emerged from the portals met the same fate.
Then, Tan Baiqu saw a figure. A towering silhouette hovered at the edge of the distorted space, having seemingly materialized from nowhere. The figure looked like a deity presiding over heaven and earth.
This silhouette was completely unfamiliar to Tan Baiqu, yet for some inexplicable reason, it exuded a deep, indescribable sense of familiarity—as if she were standing before an elder from her own family.
Who is he?
The thought echoed in Tan Baiqu’s mind.
