Chapter 601: Letting Go

Bei Sangyun brought Fei Chuan with her again for dinner at the Bei villa.

Ever since the two got back together, they had become inseparable. Every morning, the young man would appear at their door to pick up her granddaughter, and just before dinner, he would show up again to bring her home.

This made Grandma Bei feel a little bitter. She still remembered clearly how this young man had once made her granddaughter miserable as a child, left her depressed while they were abroad, and, more recently, caused her to lock herself in her room for days.

Although Grandma Bei didn’t know the full details, the fact that her granddaughter had been troubled for a long time because of him didn’t sit well with her. She wanted to test him in her own way—otherwise, her heart wouldn’t be at ease.

So, every dinner, Grandma Bei made it clear she didn’t like Fei Chuan.

She would serve all the meat to Bei Sangyun, herself, and Maid Ye Zhai—leaving only scraps for Fei Chuan. Everyone had ice in their drinks—except Fei Chuan. Everyone had a bowl of soup beside their plate—except Fei Chuan.

Fei Chuan noticed Grandma Bei’s little "moves," but before Bei Sangyun could catch on, he would cover for her—discreetly shifting things so that Bei Sangyun wouldn’t notice her mischiefs.

Grandma Bei began to notice this.

Fei Chuan never once complained or exposed her pettiness. He simply endured it.

This made Grandma Bei feel strangely pathetic—and, eventually, pitying. She stopped the petty actions, though she still shot the young man glares whenever her granddaughter wasn’t looking.

Then, one day, while Bei Sangyun was still upstairs getting ready, Fei Chuan, who was waiting downstairs, approached Grandma Bei.

"Grandma Bei, can we talk for a moment?"

"Who told you you could call me Grandma Bei? It’s Mrs. Bei to you."

Fei Chuan wasn’t offended by her sharp tone. He even smiled. "Yes, Mrs. Bei. I have something important to say."

Grandma Bei glanced at the stairs. No one was around. Just the two of them.

She nodded. "Go on."

"I... I know why you dislike me. I made Sangyun cry. I hurt her. And I understand that you can’t trust me with your granddaughter after what I’ve done. Honestly, I can’t forgive myself for it either."

Grandma Bei narrowed her eyes, silently scrutinizing his every word.

"I won’t run away from what I did. Please let me take responsibility and make it up to your granddaughter." Fei Chuan bowed deeply, showing both respect and complete surrender.

Grandma Bei remained silent for a while. The young man’s voice was steady and sincere. However, trust didn’t come easily—especially when it came to her granddaughter’s well-being.

"How do you plan to take responsibility?"

"It may be hard to believe just my words. But I intend to spend the rest of my life making it up to her. She is, and always will be, my top priority. Her happiness comes before mine. If I have to sacrifice everything for her, I will."

"You’re saying such big words, young man. Do you even understand what those words mean?"

"I do." Fei Chuan stood up straight, meeting her gaze. "And I’m prepared to prove it."

He walked over to the couch, picked up his briefcase, and opened it. From inside, he pulled out several documents and handed them to Grandma Bei.

"This is just the beginning. There’s still so much more I want to do for her."

Grandma Bei glanced at the documents. Though filled with unfamiliar jargon, she understood enough to know what they implied. She looked up at Fei Chuan in shock.

"You..."

Fei Chuan bowed again. "I’m leaving tomorrow, and I’ll be gone for a long time. But if you’ll allow it, I want to prove my sincerity—to you, and to her. Please let me."

Silence filled the room again.

Fei Chuan didn’t move, remaining bowed until he heard Grandma Bei sigh.

"Fine. I’ll give you a chance. But if you ever make my granddaughter cry again, I’ll tear all of this up right in front of you."

Fei Chuan raised his head, eyes filled with gratitude and a solemn promise. "I won’t waste this chance. I swear."

He then laid out his plans, and as Grandma Bei listened, she was moved. In the end, she agreed to the trip as he requested.

And just two days ago, the young man sneakingly visited them.

Snow was falling heavily. Grandma Bei and Maid Ye Zhai, carrying local goods they bought at the market, made their way to where Bei Sangyun was.

From afar, they spotted Bei Sangyun standing with a phone pressed to her ear, smiling happily.

Just from her smile and the softness in her eyes, Grandma Bei could already guess who was on the other end of the call. There was only one person who could make her granddaughter beam like a child and yet smile so tenderly like a woman.

She sighed inwardly. It was obvious—her granddaughter truly liked Fei Chuan.

They were just about to approach when Maid Ye Zhai gently held Grandma Bei back.

"Let’s give them a moment, Madame Bei." She gestured toward another direction.

Grandma Bei turned—and saw a familiar figure standing a short distance away.

Fei Chuan was behind the car, peeking at Bei Sangyun from afar, a soft expression on his face as he listened to her over the phone.

Separated by distance, speaking over the phone—one smiling, the other watching fondly—Grandma Bei finally understood. The two were deeply in love, and it wasn’t something she could interfere with.

"...Madame Bei," Maid Ye Zhai said quietly, "you know how important Young Miss is to me, right?"

Grandma Bei nodded. If there was anyone in the world she could trust with Bei Sangyun’s happiness aside from herself, it was Maid Ye Zhai.

"Then please believe me when I say this: letting Young Miss go to Fei Chuan’s arms is the right thing to do. Can’t you see how happy she is? And that young man... he isn’t so bad. He had his reasons, and Young Miss understands them. Now they’re finally together. And as the people who love her most, we should support her."

Grandma Bei was quiet for a moment before letting out a gruff harrumph. "I know. I just wanted to make that young man work for it. Otherwise, he’d never learn to treasure my granddaughter properly." Grandma Bei turned around. "I forgot to buy something in the market. Let’s go."

Maid Ye Zhai smiled and followed her back to the mall.

.....

Grandma Bei remembered that day. She hadn’t been trying to stop her granddaughter or make things difficult for Fei Chuan—she just needed to be sure. Sure that her granddaughter would be treated well and never have to suffer again.

Grandma Bei rolled up her sleeves. "I’ll wash the rice. Move over."

Fei Chuan looked at her, stunned.

She caught the expression on his face and added matter-of-factly, "It’s getting late. This way’s faster. We can’t let them go hungry, can we?"

Fei Chuan’s lips slowly curled into a smile. "Right."
