Chapter 55: Soft Methods

Charlotte hadn’t opened her eyes from the start.

It felt like she’d been falling forever, air rushing past her ears, her stomach twisted up in exhilaration because of the endless drop, until finally, something soft caught her at the bottom. And before she could even register the sensation, she was shooting right back up again like she’d been launched from a rocket ship.

And then...warmth.

The moment she wrapped into that soft and familiar embrace, her entire body relaxed. She didn’t even have to open her eyes to know.

She’d been held like this so many times before, tight, protective, unmistakably his. So when she slowly blinked her eyes open and saw his face above hers, her lips immediately curved up.

"Mika!" She shouted in delight, beaming. "I knew it! I knew you’d save me!" She threw her arms around his neck, completely overjoyed. "Of course I’d end up in your arms the moment I opened my eyes! I just knew it! I thought for sure that—"

But just as she was about to say another word, one of Mika’s hands suddenly reached up and forcefully clamped over her mouth. His fingers pressed against her cheeks, squishing them together, and giving her a funny, puffed-up expression.

It made her go wide-eyed in confusion. She tried to mumble something, but she couldn’t even form words properly now.

And then she saw his face.

Gone was the warm, gentle Mika she knew.

His expression was cold...Unbelievably cold.

And his eyes...they weren’t just serious, they were abysmal.

Dark. Flat. Furious. It wasn’t a surface-level scolding. There was something deeper behind them.

A quiet, simmering rage. It made her fall silent immediately.

He then leaned in closer, his lips right next to her ear.

"This is the last time I’m saving you like this, Charlotte." He said, voice low and intense. "If you ever, ever do something like that again, if you ever throw yourself into danger like that without thinking, then you can forget me saving you. You hear me?"

She stared at him, stunned.

"I won’t come next time. I won’t catch you. If you fall, if you hit the pavement, I’m not lifting a single damn finger.I’ll just walk away. Like you’re nothing...Like I don’t even know you."

His voice was hollow. There was no empathy. Just sheer disappointment. Just anger.

Anyone watching from the outside would be terrified. The way his dark eyes seemed to swallow the light whole, the way he looked down at her like she had betrayed him, would send a chill down anyone’s spine.

And he truly thought Charlotte would feel it. That she’d be shocked, scared, finally realize what he felt.

...But no.

...To his complete disbelief, she just smiled.

With the brightest, most casual look on her face, she tilted her head and chuckled.

"Oh, come on, Mika." She said, patting his shoulders in a reassuring way. "What are you even talking about?"

He blinked.

"There’s no way you’d ever let me fall." She said with absolute confidence. "You? Just standing there while I hit the ground? Please." She gave a sarcastic snort. "I’d sooner believe you’d end up destroying the entire world than let me die in front of you. And even that sounds more realistic than you walking away."

Her grin didn’t waver as she poked his nose.

"You’re not fooling anyone. Not me. You’ll always save me. That’s just the Mika I know...So quit pretending you’re heartless, it doesn’t suit you."

He stared at her, dumbfounded.

This was exactly what he feared. That no matter how serious he sounded, no matter how harsh he acted, none of it worked on her.

Because she trusted him too much.

Way too much.

He let out a long sigh, releasing her from the grip, and rested his hand on her shoulder, softer now. His eyes dropped.

Plan A had failed miserably.

So, it was time for Plan B.

"Charlotte..." He called, this time gently. His voice lost all its coldness. Instead, it carried something heavy, vulnerability.

"Don’t do that again." He murmured. "I was scared." His eyes met hers, soft and serious now. "Really scared. I thought I was going to lose you, and I...I don’t want to see you like that again. I don’t want to feel that again. Please."

Even though he said it in a half-hearted manner like he was forced to say such sappy things, the moment those words left his mouth, her expression completely shifted.

Her bravado disappeared.

"Oh my god..." She whispered, throwing her arms around his neck tightly. "Mika, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize, I didn’t mean to scare you like that."

She hugged him as tightly as she could.

"I won’t do something like that again. I swear. No more jumping off swords or stupid things, okay? I promise."

He didn’t say anything, just let her hug him.

And then slowly, his arms came around her too.

He held her close, finally breathing properly again.

So soft methods, huh?...That was the only thing that worked with Charlotte.

Harshness, threats, seriousness, they bounced off her. But the moment he opened up, even a little, she melted.

He sighed again, quietly.

There really was no other way to handle a girl like her. A girl who was completely, utterly crazy about him.

Charlotte then pulled back, laughing, and wiped a tear from her eye as she caught her breath.

"But even though I say that...I really did enjoy what just happened."

She said, shaking her head in disbelief.

"It was so fun. I mean, when I was falling, at first it was just me flying straight down and I thought, okay, this is it, I’m going to be a human pancake."

Her hands mimicked the motion, swooping down like a dive-bomber.

"But then, then I hit something rubbery, like this squishy wall of jelly or something! I thought I was gonna get absorbed into the earth!...But nope, next thing I know, I was shot back up like a slingshot! And I went flying up even faster than I was falling."

"...I seriously thought my clothes were gonna get ripped off at the speed!"

Her excitement was written all over her face, flushed and animated.

"And then I landed, boom, right in your lap, in your hands!" She grinned and threw her arms up in victory, like a gymnast finishing a routine. "It was like a magic trick! Like, like one of those circus acts, except it was real!"

Then, with a bright spark in her eyes, she beamed.

"Only you could make something like that happen and somehow turn it into a game...That was amazing, Mika!"

Mika let out a dry chuckle, lips twitching upward as he watched the girl casually turn what had just moments ago been a potential disaster into some kind of carnival ride.

"You really turned a near-death freefall into an amusement park memory." He muttered with a shake of his head.

Charlotte, still bubbling with joy, then turned and spun around, ready to tell her mother all about it.

"Mama, you should’ve experienced it yourself! It was just like I said and it was so fun! And—"

But she cut off mid-sentence, her eyes suddenly widening as she froze in place.

Yelena was standing with her arms crossed, lips pressed into a pout, her gaze fixed on both of them with a slow-burning glare.

It wasn’t her usual calm, collected expression.

No, this one was practically crackling with a quiet vengeance, as if both of them had committed some unforgivable sin. She looked furious...and just a bit betrayed.

Charlotte’s cheerfulness immediately faltered. She took a hesitant step back, glanced nervously at Mika, and whispered.

"Um...why does Mama look like she wants to throw us both off the planet right now? Did...Did you do something to make her mad?"

Mika blinked, then let out a soft laugh, rubbing the back of his neck with a sheepish smile.

"No, no, it’s not like that at all. I didn’t do anything to make her mad...exactly."

Charlotte tilted her head. "Then what happened?"

"Well." Mika began, still grinning. "We just had a little...bet, earlier. About who would make the first move."

"The first move?" Charlotte blinked. "Like...?"

"She said I should make the first move..." Mika explained. "...so she wouldn’t have to. And I said, no, she should make the first move, so I wouldn’t have to. We went back and forth. But in the end..."

He shrugged, all too pleased with himself.

"She gave in and made the first move. Even though I’m the one who actually saved you in the end. So...technically, she lost."

Charlotte gasped in exaggerated understanding, nodding along. "Ohhh, so that’s why! So she got tricked into giving in first!"

"Exactly..." Mika said with a wink. "And if she’d just stayed still and trusted me, she totally would’ve won."

Charlotte turned back toward Yelena, now with a smug little smirk of her own.

"You know, Mama...earlier I was scolding Mika for not trusting you." She pointed a finger dramatically. "But now I realize, you’re the one who didn’t trust him! If you just believed in him for, like, five more seconds, you would’ve won! But nope, you panicked, made your move, and now, he wins."

Mika placed a hand to his chest, looking dramatically wounded. "Truly tragic. All these years...and she still doesn’t trust me. I thought we had something special."

Charlotte patted his shoulder solemnly. "It’s okay, Mika. Even if Mama doesn’t trust you...I do."

The two of them shared a comically solemn nod as they both turned back to look at Yelena with matching smug expressions.

And seeing the dramatic act in front of her and how both of them were ganging up to bully her, Yelena’s mouth opened. Then closed. Then opened again, trying to find something, anything, to say.

"You two...you two...YOU TWO—!" She finally stammered out, hands clenched at her sides.

Her voice trembled with sheer frustration. Her eyes burned with betrayal, and her pout had grown even deeper.

Clearly, she had so much to say, about how they didn’t understand her position as a mother, how she did trust Mika, how her instincts had kicked in and moved her body before her thoughts had time to catch up. But she was so overwhelmed with fury and flustered emotions that the words refused to come.

Instead, she turned around on the front of the sword, nose in the air, and turned her back to them completely with a silent hmph!

Charlotte and Mika stared in silence.

The goddess who saved the world. The woman legends were written about. Their guardian, their mother was actually pouting and giving them the silent treatment like a sulky child...
