Chapter 46: The Most Dangerous Creature Of All...

Even though Yelena desperately wanted answers about the past, her focus was pulled to her daughter’s fragile state in front of her. Charlotte’s usual fiery energy had dimmed, leaving her looking so weak and small that it pained her mother to watch.

Yelena took a step forward, ready to reach out and call Charlotte’s name,

But before she could, Charlotte suddenly perked up in Mika’s embrace, her head shooting up with a cheerful grin plastered across her face.

"Oh, that feels so good! Feels so good!" She exclaimed in a singsong voice, her arms stretching out in a victorious pose like she’d just won a competition. "Just one hug from Mika and I feel like I’ve been reborn again!"

Yelena froze, blinking in confusion as her daughter twirled on the spot, hugging herself with a goofy little laugh.

"Charlotte?" She asked cautiously. "Are you really alright? You looked...you looked so down just a moment ago."

"Of course I’m alright, Mama!" Charlotte replied with a wide, innocent smile. "It’s true that I felt a little gloomy for a second, but after snuggling up with Mika..." Her eyes fluttered dreamily as she inhaled deeply. "Ahhh...just breathing in his scent, taking in his stench and odor, it’s like my soul’s been healed!"

Mika’s brow twitched as he smiled wryly at her. "Oi, oi...don’t say it like that. You’re making it sound like I have terrible body odor or something."

Charlotte giggled and clung to his arm again. "But you don’t! That’s why it works so well. It’s the divine smell of Mika himself. No one else could ever compare."

Watching the scene unfold, Yelena let out a deep breath of relief. Her daughter didn’t seem nearly as fragile now. Instead, she looked...happy. Genuinely happy. And it struck Yelena then just how vital Mika was to Charlotte’s entire being.

’This boy...’ Yelena thought, her gaze softening. ’If one day he really does marry my daughter...she’ll probably be the happiest girl in the entire world.’

Just as she let out a quiet sigh and felt her shoulders relax, her nose suddenly twitched.

"Hmm?" Yelena murmured, sniffing the air lightly.

Her eyes dropped to the ground where the dagger she had used earlier was.

The weapon seemed ordinary at first glance, but for some reason her instincts told her otherwise. She lifted her hand slightly, and the dagger floated upward with an invisible force until it hovered in front of her face.

Her brow furrowed as she gave it another careful sniff.

"Where...exactly did you get this dagger?" Yelena asked, her voice calm but edged with suspicion.

Mika’s shoulders stiffened slightly, though his face remained neutral.

"Oh that! I...bought that for Mika." Charlotte explained cheerfully. "On the way back here, we stopped by this little old antique shop and Mika thought it’d make a good replacement for one of his broken knives, so I bought it for him. It looks pretty cool doesn’t it!"

Yelena’s eyes didn’t leave the dagger. "An antique shop, huh...?" She muttered. "And where was this shop?"

"Just a tiny place off the side streets. Is something wrong with it?" Charlotte asked innocently. "You’re staring at it so intently, Mama."

Yelena shook her head slowly.

"It’s nothing." But her voice grew quieter as she added, "It’s just...I smell blood on this dagger."

Mika’s eyes twitched ever so slightly as he averted his gaze, an uncharacteristic flicker of unease crossing his features.

Charlotte noticed this and quickly jumped in.

"Ah! The shopkeeper did mention that it was an artifact once used in combat. That’s probably why there’s still a faint scent. It’s likely just old monster and mana beast blood or something from years ago."

But Yelena didn’t seem convinced. She lifted her eyes and met Charlotte’s with a grave expression as she said, "It’s not otherworldly blood."

Charlotte blinked, her smile faltering. "Eh? Then what—"

"It’s human blood." Yelena said firmly, her voice heavy with certainty.

Charlotte froze in place, her fingers tightening instinctively. "T-That...can’t be. You’re mistaken, Mama. It’s probably just old residue from the monsters it killed—"

"I know the difference between monster blood and human blood." Yelena interrupted sharply. "And I can say for sure that this isn’t monster blood...It’s human."

Her tone wasn’t raised, but, it was something far heavier, something that made Charlotte swallow hard as her fingers clenched unconsciously.

Yelena’s eyes remained fixed on the dagger as a bitter, faint smile tugged at her lips. She seemed to be staring past it, as though seeing something long buried in her memories.

"You might be wondering..." Yelena began softly, her voice dropping into a chilling calmness. "Why I know the difference between monster blood and human blood so well. Why someone like me, who was meant to protect humanity, would even have a reason to know such a thing."

Charlotte’s throat felt tight. She gulped audibly, her eyes darting nervously to her mother.

Yelena’s gaze didn’t waver as she continued,

"Back then...the otherworldly creatures in the rifts were terrifying. No one can deny that. They were dangerous, deadly, and horrifying in ways that shook even the bravest of us."

"...But do you know what was far more dangerous than any monster?"

Charlotte shook her head slightly, almost afraid to hear the answer.

"It was the humans." Yelena said coldly, her voice like ice. "The ones who betrayed their own kind. The ones who turned their blades against humanity for their own selfish gain. They...were the scariest creatures of all."

Charlotte’s lips trembled, her wide eyes locked on her mother.

"To protect myself..." Yelena murmured, her fingers tightening around the hilt of the floating dagger. "And to protect humanity...I had to do what I had to do."

The bitter smile on her face deepened, and Charlotte’s breath caught in her throat.

Hearing her mother indirectly admit, so calmly, that she had human blood on her hands...it wasn’t exactly a revelation. She had known about it for years.

But hearing it stated so plainly, so matter-of-factly, sent a strange shiver down her spine.

Mika, who had been silent until now, stepped in swiftly before the tension could twist any tighter. With an easy, harmless smile, he spoke in a lighthearted tone that felt oddly out of place.

"Yelena..." Mika said quickly. "You’re probably just mistaking it. Maybe there is blood...but it might not be from the dagger itself."

Yelena’s sharp gaze flicked toward him instantly.

Mika chuckled softly, trying to wave off her suspicion. "I mean, we’re in a hospital right now. Blood is spilled here all the time. People come in with cuts, with broken and bleeding limbs...maybe the scent rubbed off from the surroundings."

For a long moment, Yelena simply stared at him, her eyes unreadable. Mika’s harmless smile didn’t falter, but inside he could feel his heart rate tick up as her unwavering gaze seemed to search through him.

’Come on...believe it.’ Mika thought as he stared back calmly. ’Don’t dig deeper...just let it go.’

Finally, Yelena let out a small sigh and relaxed her shoulders.

"Yeah...you’re probably right." She murmured. "What you said makes sense."

She placed the dagger to the side, her fingers lingering on the hilt for a moment longer before she finally released it.

"Maybe my senses aren’t as sharp as they used to be. I’ve been away from the frontlines too long...perhaps I’m overthinking things."

Charlotte immediately smiled in relief, her shoulders sagging as she clung to Mika’s arm again.

"That’s right, Mama! You’re probably just overthinking it." Charlotte said quickly, her voice light as if trying to push the whole topic aside. "It’s just an antique dagger, nothing more."

Yelena nodded slowly, though the faint crease in her brow didn’t completely fade.

Meanwhile, Mika’s calm smile remained fixed in place, but a small bead of sweat trickled down the side of his temple. That was too close, he thought to himself.

’Both mother and daughter are the same.’

Mika mused inwardly, forcing himself to keep his breathing steady.

’Charlotte can sniff me out from half a city away if she wants to, and her mother can smell blood even on a dagger that’s been wiped clean.’

He stifled a sigh, knowing that next time he needed to be far more careful.

’I should really take a proper shower and clean up thoroughly before meeting either of them again...or else these two will sniff out every single secret I have before I even realize it.’
