Chapter 42: I’m The Cutest In The World!

Chapter 42: I’m The Cutest In The World!

Just as Yelena opened her mouth to say something to Mika, something that he would most certainly refuse but she was equally certain she’d force him to accept, they all froze at the sound of hurried footsteps echoing down the corridor.

A small, timid female voice called out faintly. "T-This way! They’re right here...hurry!"

Charlotte groaned loudly and threw her head back. "Not again..." She muttered under her breath, already preparing her glare for yet another wave of nosy reporters.

But to their surprise, the group that appeared wasn’t made up of reporters at all.

It was a nurse, frail and pale-faced, leading a squad of hospital security guards down the hallway.

"This way, this way! Hurry before they do anything more reckless!" The nurse urged, her voice trembling.

The security guards, burly men in stiff uniforms, strode forward with authority, at least until they reached the room. The moment their eyes fell on the figures standing inside, their confident steps faltered.

There were no reporters...No crowd.

Only Yelena, Charlotte, and Mika.

And though the room was quiet and calm, a suffocating presence seemed to linger like smoke in the air, thick and heavy enough to make even seasoned guards hesitate at the threshold.

The guards, all hardened men trained for emergencies, froze in place. Their feet wouldn’t move any further, as though an invisible wall kept them back.

The nurse, her small frame trembling, realized she had no choice. She stepped forward, her legs wobbling as she entered the room alone.

The moment Yelena’s eyes turned to her, the poor nurse felt her breath catch in her throat.

This was Yelena, the Blade Maiden, the savior of continent and the goddess she looked up to. She had watched countless recordings of her, seen her grace screens across the world, but to stand in front of her now...felt unreal.

The nurse’s fingers fidgeted nervously as her knees buckled. Somehow, she forced herself down into a deep bow, her forehead nearly touching the floor.

"I-I deeply apologize!" She stammered, her voice trembling. "This was entirely our fault. We didn’t mean for this incident to happen."

"Somehow...Somehow those reporters snuck in through the emergency exit! We tried to stop them, but before we could even get security up here, they had already barged into this room! I...I personally tried to block them, but..."

Her voice cracked, her small frame quivering as she forced out her words.

"They were too many, and too overwhelming. I couldn’t stop them...I’m so, so sorry for the inconvenience we’ve caused!"

Yelena’s calm gaze stayed fixed on the trembling woman, her expression perfectly neutral.

The nurse swallowed hard and continued, her voice almost breaking. "As an apology...the hospital management has decided to waive all fees for this visit and any future ones. Please, you and your family can visit anytime you wish without charge."

She trembled as though her very life was on the line.

Seeing her bow so deeply, Yelena’s expression softened ever so slightly. She felt no anger, none at all, toward this timid young nurse. In fact, she found herself pitying her.

"There’s no need for all that." Yelena said gently, her voice calm and mature. "Really, it’s not a problem. We’ve already handled the issue ourselves."

But as she glanced outside the room with faint concern, her tone grew slightly firmer, not harsh, but responsible.

"However...while it was nothing for us to deal with them, you should consider how dangerous this could have been for others."

The nurse flinched, her eyes widening as Yelena continued.

"Those reporters are ambitious and brutish. They wouldn’t hesitate to shove someone aside if it meant snapping a single photo."

"What if an elderly patient had been walking in the hallway? Or a pregnant woman? A child? This situation could have easily turned tragic."

Her eyes, though calm, glimmered faintly in the light.

"Please strengthen your security measures. Not for our sake, but for the safety of everyone else in this hospital."

Her voice was steady, poised, and brimming with a sense of responsibility, a goddess speaking like a wise elder. But to Yelena’s surprise, her words seemed to shatter the nurse entirely. fre.eweb novel\.c om

The young woman’s eyes filled with tears as her small shoulders shook violently.

"I-I’m so sorry! I’m sorry...I’m so, so sorry!" The nurse sobbed, her voice breaking as she repeated the words over and over, trembling like a fragile bird.

Charlotte blinked in shock.

"...She’s crying?"

Mika smirked. He crossed his arms lazily and leaned back against the pillows.

"Oh my...it seems the great battle angel who saved the world is bullying young nurses now." He teased, his voice dripping with amusement.

Yelena spun toward him, her brows furrowing. "What?" She said indignantly. "I didn’t bully her! I was simply giving her advice."

"She probably didn’t hear it as advice." Mika said smoothly, his grin widening. "Think about it. Someone like her probably grew up idolizing you, looking up to you as some untouchable savior."

"...Even the softest words from you would feel like thunder in her ears."

He gestured to the sobbing nurse. "So imagine how much more terrifying it is when you look at her with that calm, perfect, otherworldly face of yours. I’d cry too."

Yelena gasped, scandalized. "That’s absurd! I was being gentle!"

"Hmm..." Mika’s smirk didn’t falter. "Sure you were."

She let out a small huff, clearly annoyed now.

"And that..." Mika said with a playful glint in his dark eyes. "...is why if you want to handle delicate little matters like this, you should leave them to me."

Raising an eyebrow, Yelena and Charlotte both watched as Mika leaned forward slightly and called out softly,

"Hey. Come here."

His voice was so gentle, so warm, that it startled the nurse. She hesitated, looking between him and Yelena, unsure if she even could approach.

But seeing Mika’s calm, inviting smile, the boy whom the Blade Maiden herself was caring for, she swallowed hard and forced her trembling legs to move.

When she reached his bedside, her tear-streaked face barely tilted up.

"Y-Yes...? What can I...What can I do for you?" She asked meekly, her voice cracking despite her effort to steady it.

Mika let out a soft hum, tilting his head as if he were deep in thought while staring at the trembling nurse in front of him. His gaze was calm but unreadable, which only made her fidget nervously under the weight of his stare.

"It’s a surprise, really..." He muttered, his tone low and almost teasing.

The nurse blinked, confused.

"...A surprise?"

"Yes..." Mika said, his lips curling into a deceptively gentle smile as he leaned back against the pillows with an air of casual authority. "You see, I was actually just about to call the chairman of this hospital...and ask him to fire you. To have you taken off your post immediately."

The words were delivered so smoothly, so offhandedly, that it took the nurse a few seconds to process them. But once they registered, her already pale face drained of every last bit of color.

"W-What...?" She whispered, her voice cracking.

Her knees buckled as she collapsed onto the floor, clutching at her uniform like a lifeline.

"P-Please...no...why?" She cried, her tears flowing again as her voice trembled in desperation. "Why would you do that? Please don’t...please don’t take my job away..."

Charlotte arched a brow, her pink-tinged eyes narrowing curiously as she watched the scene unfold. Yelena, meanwhile, crossed her arms but said nothing, her eyes glimmering faintly with quiet amusement.

The nurse’s voice wavered as she stammered out. "I-It’s because I couldn’t do my job properly, isn’t it? Because I failed to stop those reporters from entering and—"

But Mika shook his head slowly, interrupting her.

"Not at all." He said smoothly, his tone dangerously calm. "It’s not about that."

The nurse blinked through her tears, her lips quivering. "T-Then why? Why would you—"

Mika leaned forward slightly, his sharp eyes catching the light in a way that made her breath hitch.

"You see..." He said casually, his lips curving into a sly grin. "...the only reason I came to this hospital was because I’d heard all the nurses here are cute...and pretty to look at."

The nurse froze, her teary eyes widening in shock.

"I love pretty things." Mika continued in a teasing, playboyish tone, resting his chin on his hand. "I can’t stand seeing anything ugly. But right now..."

He tilted his head slightly, letting out a small sigh.

"Right now, all I see is a sobbing nurse with a face full of tears instead of the pretty smiles I expected to see when I got here."

The nurse’s trembling worsened as her face turned a deep shade of red.

But then Mika’s grin widened, his gaze sharpening slightly as he added. "Maybe...just maybe...if you stop crying and show me your face properly, I might change my mind. Depending on whether you’re cute or not."

"W-What...?" She squeaked, startled by the sudden shift in his tone.

"Come on." He said softly, his voice dripping with both amusement and challenge. "Wipe your tears. Let me see if you’re worth keeping around or not."

Flustered and desperate, the nurse frantically wiped her face with her sleeves, trying to clean up her tear-streaked cheeks as best she could.

Her large, watery eyes darted up at him nervously as she sniffled and whispered. "P-Please...please don’t make me lose my job. I’m the only one providing for my family...I can’t lose this...please..."

Mika tilted his head thoughtfully, his sharp eyes scanning her face with mock seriousness.

"That’s...admirable, I’ll admit." He murmured, nodding. "Providing for your family. That’s quite noble of you."

The nurse’s face lit up faintly with hope. But then Mika smirked, his next words knocking the air out of her.

"...But still, I’m not fully convinced yet."

Her heart sank instantly.

"You’re cute." Mika said bluntly, making her blush profusely. "But I was expecting more. Much, much more."

The nurse’s lips quivered as tears threatened to return. "I-I..." She stammered, terrified she was about to lose her job right then and there.

But Mika’s voice suddenly softened, though his sly grin remained.

"Of course...if you convince me yourself that you’re cute, beautiful, and pretty..." He said slowly, his words teasing as he leaned forward slightly. "Then maybe I’ll change my mind."

The nurse’s face turned pink as she stared at him in utter disbelief.

"W-What?!" She gasped.

"Yes..." Mika said with a little shrug. "Go on. Tell me. Convince me how cute and pretty you are. You only get one chance."

Yelena raised a hand to her mouth, her eyes twinkling in amusement as she tried, and failed, not to laugh.

Charlotte, on the other hand, was staring intently, her glowing pink eyes suspiciously vibrant now.

The nurse’s face burned as she stammered. "B-But...T-To say that in front of everyone—"

Mika’s calm, piercing gaze silenced her immediately. "You’d better not ruin your only chance." He said smoothly. "Or else..."

The nurse bit her lip hard, her face now a furious shade of crimson. But under Mika’s unwavering stare, she knew she had no other choice.

With her voice trembling in sheer embarrassment, the nurse clasped her hands in front of her chest and forced herself to speak, her face burning hotter than a kettle.

"I-I’m...I’m very cute...! I’m the c-cutest girl in the world...!" She stammered, her words tumbling out in a soft, squeaky voice as her eyes darted nervously between Mika, Yelena, and Charlotte.

Yelena’s lips twitched upward in amusement, while Mika’s unreadable gaze only made the nurse’s pulse quicken even more.

"M-My mother always said...I was the p-prettiest girl ever..." She continued shakily, her lips trembling as her voice grew softer. "When I was little...I-I used to stand in front of the mirror for hours and practice smiling...b-because I wanted to look like a princess in my storybooks..."

Yelena raised a hand to her mouth, her eyes sparkling with poorly hidden enjoyment of the sight.

"And...And in one year in school, I won the ’Cutest Smile’ award...! My friends would also always tell me that my eyes sparkle like stars in the night sky...and...and that my cheeks are as soft and round as mochi..."

Her voice wavered as she buried her face in her hands for a moment, then peeked through her fingers when Mika’s gaze didn’t falter.

"I-I...I even had a diary back then...and every page started with, ’Dear Diary, today I looked super adorable!’ because...because I wanted to remind myself I’m the cutest..."

Yelena clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh.

"And...And my mom still calls me her little angel!" The nurse squeaked out, her voice cracking with embarrassment as her knees nearly gave out. "She says my smile alone could melt the iciest heart! E-Even...even my cat thinks I’m cute, she purrs whenever I walk into the room!"

She took a shaky breath, her blush now reaching the tips of her ears.

"S-So please...please don’t fire me...! I’m...I’m really, really pretty and cute and...I-I promise if you let me keep my job, I’ll always wear my cutest smile every time you see me!"
