Chapter 38: What Is This Sticky Liquid?

Chapter 38: What Is This Sticky Liquid?

Yelena paused for a moment, her brows furrowing as she crossed her arms. Then, with a thoughtful sigh, she spoke.

"You know, now that I think about it...Mika might actually have a point about Fauna."

Both Mika and Charlotte blinked in surprise.

"She’s...Well..." Yelena chuckled faintly, remembering something. "Even back in the old days, when the five of us were constantly moving from Rift to Rift, fighting hordes of abominations...Fauna was always the one fussing over the tiniest scratch."

"She’d scream if one of us chipped a nail. If we so much as stumbled on uneven ground, she’d be there in a heartbeat, ready to throw us over her shoulder and run back to base like we were about to die."

Mika stared at her in disbelief. "You’re telling me you of all people got tired of her?"

"Of course I did." Yelena admitted, rubbing her temples. "Even I felt overbearing was an understatement with her sometimes. So fine, we’ll scrap the idea of going to Fauna in person."

Both Mika and Charlotte let out matching sighs of relief, their shoulders slumping as if a massive weight had been lifted from their souls.

"Thank god..." Mika muttered, almost tearing up. "Finally, someone who understands my suffering."

"Seriously..." Charlotte agreed, shuddering. "If Aunt Fauna had come here in person, she would’ve locked you in this hospital room for a month...maybe two! And she wouldn’t even let me cuddle you like this. She’d monopolize you entirely."

"Exactly." Mika said, nodding furiously.

"But..." Yelena added suddenly, her tone sharp. "I am still sending her all your tests and scans to look over."

Mika froze. "Wait, what—"

"She deserves to check it out." Yelena said firmly. "Don’t worry. I won’t tell her they’re yours. I’ll say it’s some random high-level blessed I came across. As long as she doesn’t know it’s you, she won’t fly over here on a griffin in full healer mode."

"I...guess I’m okay with that." Mika said, rubbing his face in relief. "As long as she doesn’t know it’s me, fine. Just...fine."

Yelena softened, her gaze settling back on Mika with that warm, motherly light in her eyes. She stepped closer, leaning slightly over him.

"Charlotte mentioned something to me." She said gently. "She said there was a reason why you didn’t wake up immediately after getting hit by the truck."

Mika stiffened.

"There’s no way a simple truck could hurt you." Yelena continued, her voice quiet but firm. "Not you. So...What was it?"

Her hand hovered just above his cheek, her fingers trembling slightly. "Why were you unconscious for so long? What really happened?"

Mika hesitated. He opened his mouth but no words came out. Under her earnest gaze, every excuse he wanted to make up died before it reached his lips. It was Yelena. Lying to her felt...impossible.

Seeing him struggle, Yelena let out a small, knowing sigh and smiled.

"It’s fine. You don’t have to force yourself to talk about it right now." She said softly, patting his head. "If you ever want to...my arms are always open for you."

Her voice dropped into a tender whisper.

"No matter where I am or what I’m doing...if you call for me, even if you send a pigeon holding a little note, I’ll come flying to your side. That’s my duty as your mother, and it’s a promise."

Mika’s heart clenched at her words. That warmth, that absolute dedication, he couldn’t help but smile faintly, feeling something heavy lift from his chest.

Yelena chuckled lightly, ruffling his hair. "All right. Now that we’ve settled that, I think it’s time to—"

She stepped back...but before she could finish, her heel slipped on something wet.

"Ah!" Yelena flailed slightly but managed to steady herself before falling. She looked down and frowned, her eyes narrowing.

"What in the world...?" She muttered, staring at the slick patch of shiny liquid on the hospital floor. "Why is there something so slippery here? This isn’t supposed to happen in a hospital of all places."

Charlotte and Mika froze.

Charlotte’s face flushed crimson while Mika turned pale as chalk. They then glanced at each other in unison, a wave of mutual guilt flashing between them.

"W-What is this?" Yelena asked, tilting her head curiously. She prodded at the substance with the tip of her heel, testing it. " And it’s...sticky as well? What kind of fluid is this? Why is it even here?"

Mika coughed violently, eyes darting around. "O-Oh! Uh...I-I’m sure it’s just...um...some spilled saline drip, maybe?"

"Saline isn’t sticky, Mika." Yelena pointed out flatly, rubbing her heel against the floor. "And it doesn’t glisten like this."

Charlotte looked like she was about to pass out from embarrassment. "I-It could’ve been...maybe...disinfectant? Or...maybe a cleaning solution...?"

Yelena raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "This doesn’t smell like disinfectant either."

The two of them were seconds away from trying to pull out an even more ridiculous excuse, when suddenly, the sound of loud voices echoed from the corridor outside.

"Move...Please...Don’t come in...Get out of my way..."

The loud voices outside grew sharper, the sound of hurried footsteps and shoving echoing down the corridor.

Yelena frowned, her hand on her hip. "What in the world...?" She murmured, her tone calm but edged with irritation. "What’s with all that noise in this part of the hospital? This is supposed to be one of the quietest, most secure wings."

Mika let out a soft chuckle and leaned back on the bed, hands behind his head. "Relax. Maybe a baby was born down the hall...and now two fathers have shown up, fighting over whose kid it really is."

Charlotte snorted, smothering a laugh with her palm, but Yelena didn’t seem amused.

"Very funny." She said dryly.

But Mika wasn’t entirely joking. His brow furrowed as he thought about it.

’This section is reserved for top-tier VIP patients...people with high connections and insane amounts of money. A commotion like that was...strange.’

Just as he was about to push himself off the bed to investigate, the voices outside grew clearer.

A pleading, panicked voice, likely a nurse, called out.

"Please! You can’t be here! This wing is strictly off-limits to the public!"

Her voice cracked as though she was desperately trying to hold back a wave.

"Go back! Please...I’m begging you! This floor is reserved for VIPs. Entry is strictly denied!"

Mika stiffened slightly, exchanging a wary glance with Charlotte. But then another set of voices, louder, brash, and overbearing, cut through the nurse’s desperate pleas.

"Move out of the way! We heard the Blade Maiden was here! The daughter of the Blade Maiden too!"

"Yes! Someone said they saw her bringing a boy to this wing. We just want a statement, move aside!"

The sound of cameras clicking furiously echoed faintly down the hall and hearing this Yelena’s eyes narrowed instantly, her previously calm demeanor hardening like ice.

"They’re here for us." She muttered.

Charlotte groaned, dragging her hand down her face. "Oh no...not now. Not this."

Mika, meanwhile looked amused as he was sort of expecting something like this since both him and Charlotte did come through the lobby where the entire hospital where watching them like they were animals in a zoo.

Yelena’s sharp gaze then flicked to the door, and she instantly noticed it was still wide open. When she had stormed into the room earlier, she hadn’t bothered to close it behind her.

And in response, she moved quickly to shut it, but...

"Out of the way!"

A gruff male voice shouted, followed by the sound of a body hitting the wall.

"Ahh!" The nurse yelped in pain as she was shoved aside like a ragdoll.

The door to Mika’s hospital room slammed open with a deafening crash.

In an instant, the room was flooded with people, an entire crowd of reporters and photographers, nearly fifteen strong. They stormed in with cameras flashing and microphones thrust forward like spears, their faces lit with the hunger of vultures who’d finally found a fresh carcass to feast on.

"Lady Yelena! Is it true your daughter is dating this boy?!"

"Miss Charlotte, how long has your relationship with him been going on?!"

"You over there on the bed, are you aware you’ve been hospitalized in the company of a battle angel and future battle angel who’s just as dazzling as her mother?!"

Flashes of light exploded around them, filling the room with a blinding strobe as dozens of cameras clicked in rapid succession.

Charlotte stiffened, her brow furrowing into a deep frown.

Mika sat there motionless on the bed, his expression blank and unreadable. ’Why...do they always show up at the worst possible time?’

But it was Yelena who drew every eye in the room, not because she raised her voice, but because of the suffocating aura that suddenly radiated off her.

Her eyes had turned cold, sharper than a blade drawn from its sheath.

She didn’t move. She didn’t say a word. But the sheer pressure that filled the air was enough to make the nearest reporter falter, his raised microphone trembling in his hand...
