Chapter 22: Necessary Rules
Chapter 22: Necessary Rules
Mika’s gaze drifted to the window, the city’s lights twinkling in the deepening dusk, the sky a rich indigo that signaled how late it had grown. The tests were done, the doctor had fled, and the room was theirs, quiet save for Charlotte’s soft humming as she played with his hand, rubbing his fingers against her cheek with a contented sigh.
"Well, since everything’s finished here, I think it’s time I head home." He glanced at her, her warmth a comforting anchor, and cleared his throat, his voice casual but firm. "It’s already late, Charlotte, and I’m beat. I just want to get back and crash."
Charlotte’s humming stopped, her fingers pausing as she tilted her head, her chin resting on his hand like it was a pillow.
"Home? Why are you so eager to ditch me, Mika?" Her eyes sparkled with mischief, her voice teasing but insistent. "This room’s reserved for us all night, you know. We could just stay here, keep each other company."
She leaned closer, her smile widening as she propped her chin on his hand, her gaze locking onto his.
"Unless...you’ve got some big plans waiting for you? What’s so important that you can’t hang out with me a little longer? Got a hot date or something?"
Mika’s lips twitched into a small smile, his tone light but carrying a hint of mock offense.
"A date? Come on, Charlotte, you know better than to ask that. I do have plans, though, big ones, actually. I’m pretty excited about them." He leaned back slightly, his smirk growing as he watched her curiosity pique.
"Big plans?" Charlotte’s eyes lit up, her grip on his hand tightening as she leaned forward, her voice bubbling with excitement. "Ooh, tell me! Are you staying up late to watch some epic movie marathon? Or maybe you’re cooking a huge feast? Can I come? I want to join!"
Her smile was bright, her imagination clearly running wild with visions of fun, normal activities, movies, food, maybe a late, night adventure something she could share with him.
"Movies?" But to her surprise, Mika gave her a look, his brow arching as if she’d just said something absurd, his voice taking on a righteous, almost indignant tone. "You think I’d get excited over some random movies? No way, Charlotte." freew\ebno\vel..(c)om
He leaned forward, his eyes glinting with a nerdy enthusiasm that seemed to catch her off guard.
"I’ve got something way better...I recently got my hands on two rare ores from different portals, call them Xytherium and Dracolite and I’m running an experiment tonight to see if I can combine them, fuse their properties to create a new sediment, a totally unique compound."
"...It’s going to be incredible, groundbreaking stuff!"
His voice was animated, his hands gesturing slightly despite her grip, as if he could already see the experiment unfolding and hearing this, Charlotte’s face fell, her excited smile collapsing into a blank, disbelieving stare.
"Ores? You’re talking about...rocks? That’s your big plan? Tinkering with some boring science project?" She said flatly, her tone dripping with disappointment. She then leaned back with a dramatic sigh, her pout deepening as she glared at him. "Mika, I thought you were going to say something fun, like everyone else does at night! Not...messing with rocks or whatever."
"You’re always doing this, tinkering with weird stuff, running insane experiments like trying to graft dragon scales onto a pumpkin to see if it would breathe fire, or opening random portal rifts just to toss paper planes through and see if they come back."
She flung her arms in the air. "Just the other day you went into that dimension where the sky is made of screaming faces because you ’wanted to record their pitch for data.’ And then you sent me a photo of you balancing on a giant jellyfish in some acid lake, grinning like a maniac, saying you were ’studying buoyancy.’"
"...The other week you said you were trying to bake bread in the mouth of a sleeping volcano golem. Who does that?!"
Charlotte huffed, clutching her head like she couldn’t believe his life choices.
"You’re out there teaching cyclopes how to play chess, chasing after phantom ghosts that only exist on Tuesdays, and trying to trap lightning in a jar so you can ’power your toaster for fun.’"
"...Why can’t you have a normal hobby? Something I can actually join in on?"
"What are you even talking about?" Mika’s eyes narrowed, his tone turning defensive, almost offended. "This is fun! Combining two rare ores to create a new compound? That’s the kind of thing that’d drive scientists wild! It’s amazing, Charlotte, you just don’t get the greatness of it."
He leaned forward, his voice brimming with conviction, as if he were defending a sacred art.
"Just think about it, this could change how we understand portal materials, maybe even unlock new applications...It’s not boring, it’s revolutionary!"
"Yeah, yeah, revolutionary. Sure, Mika. Sounds like a total snooze, fest to me." Charlotte rolled her eyes, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she waved a hand dismissively.
But then her expression softened, her eyes turning warm and pleading as she leaned closer, her voice dropping to a pitiful, almost cute tone.
"But even if I don’t care about your weird rock obsession, I still want to spend time with you...Can’t I come along? I promise I won’t bother you. I’ll just stand in the corner, super quiet, minding my own business."
She widened her eyes, giving him her best puppy, dog look, her chin still resting on his hand as she batted her lashes, her voice soft and begging.
"Please, Mika?..I just want to be with you."
But despite all that begging Mika actually sighed, his exasperation clear as he shook his head, his voice firm but not unkind.
"No, Charlotte, I can’t let you do that...You know why we’re even hanging out today, it’s because we ran into each other by chance on the way home. Without that coincidence, we wouldn’t be together right now."
His expression turned solemn, his eyes meeting hers with a quiet intensity.
"You know the rules I’ve set and you’ve got to follow them if we’re going to have some stability in our relationship."
Hearing him talking about rules, Charlotte’s pout deepened, her lips pressing into a thin line as she bit them, her voice tinged with annoyance.
"Yes, I know the rules." She muttered, her grip on his hand tightening. "But they’re so unfair, Mika. It’s annoying, having to follow all these stupid restrictions just to see you. I’m lonely without you."
She hugged his arm closer, her cheek pressing against his hand as if anchoring herself to him. "I don’t want to follow the rules. I just want to be with you."
Seeing the sorrowful look on her face, Mika’s expression softened, a small smile tugging at his lips as he looked at her, his voice gentle but resolute.
"I know you don’t like what I’ve set down but if you don’t follow the rules, Charlotte, the others won’t either...And you know what’ll happen then." His tone carried a hint of warning, his eyes searching hers to make sure she understood.
"Ugh, those four thieving cats!" Charlotte shivered, her face twisting into a scowl, her voice sharp with spite. "If they stop following the rules, they’ll be all over you, hoarding you to themselves, not giving me a chance!" She leaned closer, her eyes blazing with determination. "I’d be stuck on the sidelines, and that’s the last thing I want. They’d use any excuse to cling to you, and I won’t let that happen."
Mika snorted, his smile widening as he shook his head, his voice teasing.
"Exactly. That’s why the rules exist, Charlotte. They keep things fair. You can only contact me in an emergency, or we meet by chance, like today. It’s the best way to keep everyone happy." He leaned back, his gaze drifting to the window, the city’s lights a distant glow against the night.
Charlotte’s eyes glistened, her pout turning into a full, blown sulk as she let out a dramatic cry, rubbing her face against his hand like it was a tissue for her tears.
"It’s not fair!" She wailed, her voice loud and theatrical, though her tears were more performative than real. "I hate those rules, Mika! I want to see you whenever I want, not just when it’s an emergency or some dumb coincidence!"
She pressed his hand harder against her cheek, her voice muffled but insistent.
"You’re mine, and I shouldn’t have to fight for every second with you!"
Mika’s smile lingered, his gaze softening as he looked at her, though his eyes drifted back to the window, his thoughts turning inward.
The rules were his creation, a delicate balance to manage the five daughters of the goddesses, Charlotte and her "sisters" each as fiercely possessive as she was.
Without those rules, they’d swarm him, their rivalry sparking chaos as they fought for his attention.
In the past, their constant presence had been suffocating, their bickering a storm that threatened to tear everything apart and the rules ensured peace, allowing him to meet them on his terms, or in emergencies, or by chance, like today.
But as he watched Charlotte cling to him, her warmth a quiet anchor, a flicker of something else stirred in his mind.
He’d set the rules to maintain balance, to keep the daughters, and their powerful mothers at bay.
But now, his ambitions were shifting.
He wanted more, not just to protect them, but to claim them, all five daughters and their mothers, to weave them into his world completely.
The rules, he realized, might need to bend, to loosen, if he was to achieve that.
To conquer them all, he’d have to break his own boundaries, let them closer, even if it risked the delicate balance he’d fought to maintain.
The thought was dangerous, thrilling, and he pushed it down, his smile unchanging as he looked forward to whatever was going to happen in the future...
